2 From Pastor Sharon Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, By the time this article is published, Christmas will be past, New Year's celebrations will be fast approaching, and 2015 will be upon us with its resolutions, plans, and hopes for new beginnings. John Wesley valued the Covenant Service, written by Richard Alleine, a Puritan, in 1663, and re-published by Wesley in his A Christian Library in Wesley used the service whenever he visited the Methodist Societies. He writes, "It was an occasion for a variety of spiritual experiences... I do not know that ever we had a greater blessing. Afterwards many desired to return thanks, either for a sense of pardon, for full salvation, or for a fresh manifestation of His graces, healing all their backslidings" (United Methodist Book of Worship 1992, No. 288). The Covenant Service is often used on New Year's Eve as a Watch Night Service. I offer to you two readings from Wesley's Covenant Service, as meditations in preparation for the New Year. John 15: 1-8 is a suggested reading, to remind us that Jesus is the true vine. If we abide in Him, we will be on the right track, whatever comes our way this year. John 15: 1-8 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers~ such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. The Covenant Prayer, based on the spiritual concepts contained in Wesley's Covenant Service, reminds us to put everything in God's hands, yielding our whole lives to Him. "A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition" (United Methodist Hymnal, No. 607): I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, 0 glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. In 2015, may you abide in Christ, entrusting your whole life to God. Yours in Christ, Pastor Sharon 2

Ahhh, the beauty of sharing in the birth of Jesus is always a welcome sight dur ng Advent. The Christmas Carol Sing-A-Long was the most beautiful of voices in beautiful harmony that I've heard in a long time. Finishing with the last verse of "Silent Night" a cappella sounded like a heavenly choir. May the spirit of this Christmas holiday of Peace, Love, Hope, and Joy, stay with you throughout this New Year. 12 The first month ofthe year is an outstanding one In the Georgian calendar, the calendar that most of the world uses, January is the very first month of the year. The name January came from a Roman god Janus. According to the Roman legend, in 700 B.C., the ruler Numa Pompilius added January to the end of the lo-month Roman calendar. When it was added, Pompilius gave 30 days to January. However, Romans later made January the first month of the year. Moreover, in 46 B.C. Julius Caesar added a one more day to January and that's why there are 31 in January today. January was known as the wolf month to the Anglo-Saxons because in winter, wolves came into the villages to search for food. It is the coldest month in the northern half of the world, nature is quiet and the birds travel less. Also, the bears and woodchucks go into hibernation. However, in southern half of the world, January is the warmest month. During this time, unlike the northern half of the world, animals are active and plants are growing United Methodist Church of Yucaipa Non-Profit Org Beech Avenue U.S. Postage Paid Yucaipa, CA San Bernardino, CA Reverend Sharon Snapp-Kolas - Pastor Linda Ewan Church Secretary Jaci Davis - Music Director Amy Bahnson Children & Family Ministries Chris Nielsen - Accountant Deb Davidson - Youth Ministries Gerald Pugh Caretaker David Newport Facilities Management info@yucaipamethodist.org To submit articles or news items to the Friendly Visitor, please items to Linda Ewan: Linda@YucaipaMethodist.org or bring your submission to the church office, by the 10th of the month for publication in the following month's newsletter.
