1 S t. P a u l s U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u r c h January 2014 Galatians 3:23-29 (NRSV) 23 Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s offspring, heirs according to the promise. Hello all, We have made it through the Christmas season, one of my favorite times of the year, other than the cold weather and all. But so far this year we have been fairly blessed when it comes to good weather. I was very grateful that I did not have any bad weather to drive through at the end of the semester. Now it is time to look ahead and think about what 2014 will bring. For me I will be pretty busy. I start a United Methodist History class for a week from 1/06/14 to 1/10/14 and come home for the weekend and then have to head back up to KC the following Tuesday for a couple of days as we have our first Annual Clergy session as the Great Plains Annual Conference. Several thousand United Methodist Clergy will gather at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood to discuss and learn. What a great time of fellowship this will be. I will get to see some of my friends from licensing school and also reconnect with other pastors that I have become friends with. I ask that you please keep all of us in prayer as we meet in January. Of course on Saturday, January 25, we will have our 68th Annual Chicken Noodle Dinner and we will need all hands on deck to help top last year's dinner. I look forward to working alongside you during this wonderful event and hope that we can introduce even more people to the friendship and beauty that is St. Paul's United Methodist Church. So have any of you set any New Year's resolutions. For me I am not setting resolutions I am setting commitments. I am committed to getting back to the YMCA on a regular basis, committed to cutting down on the sweets, and most of The mission of St. Paul s United Methodist Church is to Teach, Share, and Witness the Love of Jesus Christ Parish Nurse 2 Evangelism Birthdays Lay Leadership Report Chicken Noodle Dinner Quilt Thank You s Deaths Baptism UMW Dillons Calendar 7 Continued on page 3 Page 1
2 From the Breaking Unhealthy & Unwanted Behaviors Are there unhealthy behaviors or thinking patterns in your life that you haven't been able to shake off? Perhaps you might consider them a stronghold. Applying the 'wisdom' of the world that you read in magazines or see on TV will likely not work to bring about a change if the problem is of a spiritual nature. You can rely on the tools that God offers like prayer, submission and dependence on the power of the Holy Spirit. Our weapons that we fight with aren t human, but instead they are powered by God for the destruction of fortresses. 2 Corinthians 10:4 (CEB) Your Motivation - God wants you to be well so that you're able to more fully live and have lots of fruit in your life... for God s glory! Ideas or Plans for the New Year 1. Become familiar with food labels, including portion sizes 2. Better yet, eat more whole/fresh fruits and vegetables - Mother Nature doesn't require labels 3. Eat whole fruits; don't drink fruit juice 4. Swap out soda for water (add a wedge of lemon, lime, or cucumber slices for a refreshing taste) 5. Plant a garden - containers can provide a lot of fresh food and herbs (healthy tip: herbs can replace salt in recipes) 6. Plan and prepare meals at home - try something new 7. Pack lunches/snacks to help avoid vending temptations 8. Eat less red meat - try a Meatless Monday menu for a few weeks 9. Squelch cravings by being physically active - take a walk before you grab a cookie or chips 10. Keep a journal to document all of the positive changes you notice in yourself and in the world around you 11. If you mess up, forgive yourself (and others) 12. Take time to reflect on how far you have come, not how far you have to go 13. Never give up! Happy New Year! Dolores E. Kinkead, Parish Nurse St. Paul s UMC Noodles Don t forget to pick up some noodles!! Cost is $3.50 a quart bag or 3 quart bags for $10. They can be purchased by contacting the church office at during regular office hours. Page 2
3 From the pastor continued from page 1 all I am committed to serving as your pastor as best as I can. What are you plans for 2014? Vacation, more time with friends, eating better? Can I ask you to be committed to serving Jesus and sharing the faith with all you come in contact with? Also can I ask you to continue worshiping with us here at St. Paul's? If you have been away for a while come on back and reconnect. I have truly been blessed to be your pastor as I have moved forward in my studies and dedication to serving God. I pray that each one of you has a wonderful and blessed Grace and Peace, Pastor Jeff and Beth Evangelism/Spiritual Nur turing Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! The month of December is a busy time in our church life as well as our personal lives. It s a special time to reach out and help those in need with time, money and gifts. Items donated to Cookson Hill Methodist Children s Home for their family Christmas Store were mailed Thursday, December 5th. Thank you so much for your giving generosity. Just a guesstimate around $600 worth of merchandise was given. The Melodears presented a beautiful program of Christmas songs and carols on Friday, December 6. A time of fellowship with finger foods and drinks was enjoyed by the nice crowd after the program. All are invited to attend the Prayer Study on Monday mornings from 11 am to noon. If you can t come every Monday, that s OK, come when you can. This is a wonderful time shared in deepening our understanding of prayer and it s value in our lives. We welcome Tanya Simpson as a new member of Spiritual Nurturing and Evangelism with her youthful vitality and new ideas.
