1 The mission of St. Paul s United Methodist Church is to Teach, Share, and Witness the Love of Jesus Christ Thanksgiving Day is a time to reflect and be thankful for all that God has given us. Although we mostly consider Thanksgiving Day to be something that is only celebrated in the United States, there are other countries that celebrate similar holiday and feasts. India celebrates harvest in various regions. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving in October. The cornucopia is traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. It come from Greek mythology and was said to be a horn of plenty that was given by the Greek god Zeus. The horn was believed to magically produce an endless supply if anything desired by the one who owns the horn. The Chinese Festival of Chung Ch ui on this day many in China eat moon cakes (small yellow cakes) to celebrate the harvest moon. The Jewish feast of Sukkot is observed during the harvest season. Ancient Egyptians had a feast in honor of Min, the god of harvest and fertility. 2 November John 3:1-3 3:1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 3:2 Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3:3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Hello all, Wow, hard to believe that October is over. Seems like as we get closer to the end of the year the months get shorter and shorter. There has been a lot going on already this fall and one of the things that I, as your pastor, have been busy with is funerals. The scripture above is often used in funerals to remind those that are grieving that there is hope. We are all saddened that Jack Graham passed away early Sunday, October 19. While we will miss him, we can look at the words from John for comfort and guidance. We can use these words also as a guiding scripture to help us continue to Teach, Share, and Witness the love of Christ to all people. Our mission at St. Paul's states that. When we hold Christ in our hearts and remember the focus of our ministry we can show people the love that Christ showed for us. As we start November, we are getting closer to the Advent season. That time of year where we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of our risen savior. But first we have to make it through Thanksgiving. Beth and I will be traveling to Springfield, Mo. to celebrate Thanksgiving with her family and while we don't really care for the drive we are looking forward to fellowship and food with all the family. As we think of the Holiday season quickly approaching, let's continue to remember to be thankful for family, for our church, and for the gift God gave us in that baby born over 2,000 years ago. So amid the holiday hustle and bustle take some time to tell your family, your friends, and all those that are close to you how thankful you are to have them in your lives. I am truly thankful that God has placed me at St. Paul's as your pastor and I am honored to work with all of you in ministry as we continue to spread the love of Christ and hold the words of John close to our hearts. Grace and Peace, Pastor Jeff and Beth Page 2
3 November 2014 St. Paul s Congregation extends their prayers and sympathy to Madeline Graham and family in the death of her husband and member of St. Paul s, Jack Graham, who passed away on October 19, Services were held at St. Paul s on October 22. A memorial has been established in his name with St. Paul s. After lengthy discussions by our Finance Committee, the decision to continue the dinner has been made. As you probably already know, this dinner has provided funds to support our annual budget. Without these funds, we would not be able to continue our ministry. I am asking each of you to help by recruiting your family and friends, and anyone you know to come and volunteer. This isn t a small project and we need all the help we can get. We hope to have tickets available for sale before Christmas. They make great Christmas gifts. We will have further planning meetings in November. Thank you and may God give us strength in this endeavor. 5 From the November 2014 Ways to Halt Pre-Diabetes in its Tracks Learn how small changes in your daily routine can help ward off type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a dangerous disease, and one that can be a challenge to manage. It can lead to heart and kidney disease, blindness and many other health conditions. Until a cure is found, people with the disease have to watch what they eat, measure their blood sugar and take medication each day. Small changes, big rewards Pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes can often be prevented. And it does not require a complete overhaul of your lifestyle. Research shows that reducing your body weight by 5 percent to 10 percent - 10 to 20 pounds for someone who weighs 200 pounds - can cut your diabetes risk in half. Weight loss can also delay the onset of diabetes. Reduce your risk The key to stopping type 2 diabetes is to reach a healthy weight. And the trick to longlasting weight loss is a healthy diet and regular exercise. Exercise Work up to 30 to 60 minutes of exercise most days of the week. Always check with your doctor before you start an exercise program. Try these exercise tips to get started: Exercise does not have to happen all at once. Take a short, brisk walk before work, during your lunch break and after dinner. Do squats while you brush your teeth. Do sit-ups and push-ups during commercial breaks of TV shows. Find something you enjoy. Walk with friends in a nearby park. Swim at your local gym or community pool. Swimming and water workouts reduce impact on your joints. This is a great form of exercise for people with knee and other joint problems. Use a push mower to cut your lawn or do other yard work, such as gardening. Get in spurts of physical activity throughout the day. Instead of letting the dog out, walk him around the block. Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. Walk over to your colleague's office instead of ing or calling. Eating right Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat and nonfat dairy. Try to limit foods high in saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, salt and added sugar. Dolores E. Kinkead, Parish Nurse St. Paul s UMC Page 5
6 November 2014 (Continued from page 1) Lamas Day, was celebrated in the British Isle. On this day people would take a loaf of bread to church. The loaf was baked from the first harvest. Harvest Festival is celebrated in the UK and as time goes on many of the American traditions and foods are added to celebration dinners. Other countries such as Germany, Brazil, Ghana, Nigeria and Korea also have thanksgiving and/or harvest festivals. Let us not only be thankful one day a year but celebrate the greatness of our God with thanks everyday! During the month of November, St. Paul s will be collecting soups of any form canned or dry mixes. Please bring your donations to the church and we will see that it is taken to UM Open Doors. United Methodist Women St. Paul s United Methodist Women will meet on Wednesday, November 12, at 10:30 am for their general meeting. The program by Dr. Linda (Simmons) Goodson will begin at 11:30 am. She will be presenting a power point on her trip to Armenia. Everyone is invited, men as well as women. A covered dish dinner will follow the presentation. Please save this date and plan to attend. Reminder: Continue to bring personal hygiene items for Women s Crisis Center and Campbell Soup labels for McCurdy School. Page 6
