3 14 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 3 In Memoriam LeRoi E. Crandall, 33, August 11, 2009 Frank R. Ferris, 32, 50 Years Member Robert E. Schroeder, 32, 50 Years Member May Almighty God, in his infinite mercy, Grant that we may meet again, to part no more. Support your Scottish Rite Is it possible to make a major gift to your Scottish Rite and still enjoy a source of income and tax benefit from the gift? The answer is, yes; through a Charitable Remainder Trust, or split interest, tax-exempt trust. This trust has two beneficiaries; the individual making the gift, income beneficiary, and their selected charity, the trust beneficiary. How does it work: The individual making the gift receives an income tax charitable deduction when the assets are placed into the trust. The assets are then placed into an investment portfolio. Periodically, Income generated by the trust is paid to the income beneficiary for life or a specific period of years (20 years or less). At the end of the trust, the remaining principal will pass to the selected charity. Robert N. Sechrest, 33 Venerable Master Lodge of Perfection It s hard to believe that is October and the year is fast coming to a close. We have been very fortunate to have had some very interesting and exciting programs so far, but the year is not over yet. In October we will celebrate the Feast of Tishri. Thus in observing the Feast of Tishri we reaffirm our dedication to human concord and the brotherhood of all men in a world of peace as individuals and brothers in the Rite. We resolve to build, as Solomon did, through harmony and cooperation, ever seeking peace of mankind. In November we take great pleasure in presenting the Meritorious Roy Henville Award to Illustrious Carlos Castaneda, 33. Brother Carlos has been active for many years in many facets of the Scottish Rite, the York Rite and the Shrine. Please come out and join us in presenting this award to this truly distinguished Mason. We will also have a visitation by the York Rite Bodies in November. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your attendance and support in the past as well as in the future. Good Cheer Report September 4, 2009 Gaylord Campbell, 32, Colon cancer George Thomas, KCCH, Hospital Please take a moment to call upon your distressed brethren. And thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy servant, and thy maid, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are within thy gates. ~ Deuteronomy 16:14 Special Announcement: The December Stated Meeting will be on December 11, 2009.

4 4 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 13 The Feast of Tishri an Invitation Knights of St. Andrew Annual Day at the Races Venerable Master Ill. Bob Sechrest, 33º, cordially invites you to our annual Feast of Tabernacles celebrating the completion of the Temple of Solomon in the year 986 B. C. The dedication of the Temple was held six months after its completion, on the 15th day of Tishri. Among the symbols of Succoth are four species of plants the citron, the branch of the palm tree, the myrtle leaves, and the willow leaves. The citron plant produces both fruit and fragrance. The palm produces fruit but no fragrance. The myrtle produces fragrance but no fruit, and the willow produces neither fruit nor fragrance. This teaches us that there are also four kinds of people. There are those that have knowledge and good deeds they correspond to the citron. There are those who live a life of good deeds, but have no knowledge they are like the palm. There are those who have knowledge, but perform no good deeds they are like the myrtle, and there are those who have neither knowledge nor good deeds they are like the willow. Yet, on Succoth, all of these different species of plants are placed together and bound as one, thus teaching us that though there are different kinds of people on Earth, with their own interests and desires, accomplishments and failures, they must still be bound together in one universal brotherhood. ~ Rabbi Julius Nodel, 32 Make your usual dinner reservations by calling (626) or Mary@pasadenascottishrite.org. and join us for this special event on the Scottish Rite Calendar, October 2, The Pasadena Chapter - Knight of St. Andrew annual Day at the Races for members, family and friends of Pasadena Valley is scheduled for October 17, 2009 at the Santa Anita race track. There will be wagering booths in the rooms for your convenience and a no host bar. Plan to arrive between 11:00-11:30 AM and enter through Gate 5. Reservations are required. The last day to RSVP is October 2, Please make your check payable to Pasadena Scottish Rite and mail to: Walter Ralston - Knights of St. Andrew 86 W. Sandra Avenue Arcadia, CA If you have any questions, feel free to see me at the Stated Meeting or call me at Receipt of your check by KSA Ralston will confirm your reservation. Be sure to enter KSA Day at the Races on the memo line of your check and don t forget to mark your calendar. Yet, Freemasonry takes what I have to offer and gives me much in return. Like the Sukkot celebrant, the Scottish Rite gathers up and binds the four species of its members, and it works tirelessly to make us all into citron. Wanting each of us to have knowledge and producing the fruit of good deeds. ~ Christian Ratliff

Also, of great significance to the Valley of Pasadena, Ill. Vernon Dandridge, 33º and Sir Knight Jack Rose, KCCH have been reappointed to the very important posts of Assistant Grand Lecturer. Therefore, three members of our Valley will be Grand Lodge officers. We should all be proud of them. Leadership consists not in degrees of technique but in traits of character; it requires moral rather than athletic or intellectual effort, and it imposes on both leader and follower alike the burdens of self-restraint. ~ Lewis H. 6 6 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 11 News The support that each of you offers the here at the Pasadena Scottish Rite is invaluable. You have made a difference in the lives of 31 children and their families according to our most recent statistics. This month, a Dad came to talk to me while his son was in therapy. He told me that when he started bringing his son, he was worried that his child was mentally retarded because he couldn t seem to speak or understand. Now after just a few weeks in therapy he can see his son improving, understanding and being understood. Life is getting better around their house. He s getting to know his son for the first time! I wish you could have seen the relief and gratitude on this man s face. I want you to know that every donation, even the smallest one, makes a huge difference in the lives of children and parents. I thank you on behalf of this Dad and for all of the parents who stand in my office awash with relief when they finally realize things will get better. The desire of power in excess caused the angels to fall; the desire of knowledge in excess caused man to fall; but in charity there is no excess, neither can angel or man come in danger by it. ~ Sir Francis Bacon, Essay On Goodness Musical Notes by Ill. Don Johansen, 33 Band Manager Our Pasadena Scottish Rite Concert Band musicians prayers have been answered.. Mr. Peter Aguilar a retired military band French horn player is now with the band as a guest musician. He will be a great asset and sound addition to the band. Brother Bill Jones 32 our percussionist for the bands wife Rosie, is a resident of Santa Anita Convalescent Hospital. She has convinced the decision makers of the hospital to have your concert band entertain all their residents. This will be fulfilled by a date in October Membership by Ill. Alton C. Emerson, 33 Tick! Tick! Tick! Tick! Even as you read this, time is slipping away from that chance to get a candidate for the upcoming Fall Class. One of our members has indicated he may have as many as five candidates lined up. Now that is enthusiasm and hard work. Those of you who take advantage of your membership in Scottish Rite know that your Masonic education only starts in the Blue Lodge and to get the full benefit on that beginning it is necessary to take further steps. While it is really up to the individual to study Freemasonry and learn those lessons necessary for his Masonic development, Scottish Rite has a means and the ability to guide and enrich each man along his Masonic path. So, one month to go before the start of this new class. Make it your personal goal to see that you are a Top Line Signer for at least one candidate. It costs you nothing, takes little of your time, but the benefits, to you, in seeing a Brother Mason take new and important steps on the well regarded Masonic pathway will be a lifetime reward.

8 8 Pasadena Scottish Rite Bulletin 9 Ill. LeRoi Edward Crandall, 330 With the untimely passing away of Illustrious LeRoi Edward Crandall, 330 the Pasadena Scottish Rite has lost another of its stalwart toilers in the vineyards of Freemasonry, LeRoi was born on January 27, 1928 and entered into rest on August 11, He came from a completely Masonic family. His father and four uncles were all Masons, one uncle a Past Master, and his mother was a member of Eastern Star. He was raised a Master Mason in 1956 in the former Glassell Park Lodge #605 and was Master eight years later. Some years after that, following upon consolidation with Eagle Rock Lodge #422, he was the first Master of the consolidated lodge. For several years thereafter, until further consolidation with South Pasadena Lodge #290, he served as Secretary. Over the years his lodge activities included membership on the Temple Boards of all three lodges, twenty seven years as Trestle Board editor, and much committee work. For one year he was a member of the Grand Lodge Public Relations Committee. He was a Job s Daughters Associate Bethel Guardian during the time when a granddaughter was going through the chairs. He was an active member of Eastern Star where, for several years up to the time of his death, he had been serving as his Chapter Treasurer He was a recipient of the Hiram Award, and also of the Eastern Star Rob Morris Award. He received his Grand Lodge Golden Veteran Award in LeRoi joined our Bodies in 1977, but working swing shift hours he was unable to become too active until his retirement, after which he became very active. He took part in degree work and also as a cast member of our plays Greater Love Hath No Man and The Living Constitution He was Master of Kadosh of the Consistory in 1997 and Wise Master of the Chapter Rose Croix in For the past 10 years or so he was serving as Assistant Secretary He was on our bulletin editorial staff where he was in charge of mailings. He was invested a Knight Commander of the Court of Honour in 1997 and coroneted a Thirty Third Inspector General Honorary in LeRoi was also a York Rite Mason and a Shriner. Our brother s entire working career was in the print trade. He prepared himself for that by taking printshop classes in High School in New Jersey where his family had moved years before. He then worked for two or three years at several print shops until 1949 when he returned to Los Angeles. He was hired by the Los Angeles Times as an apprentice pressman. At the time of his retirement in 1992 he was Supervisor of Plate Making at the Times Chatsworth facility. Apart from work and Freemasonry, and of curse his family, LeRoi devoted some of his time to his two favorite hobbies - stamp collecting and deep sea fishing LeRoi was born in Wilmar (San Gabriel) and, as noted, his family moved back east, this while he was still very young He and his wife Marciel were married in 1953 and made their home in the Highland Park community of Los Angeles ever since. They had three daughters, Gail, Claire, and Marceil, all Past Honored Queens of Job s Daughters, two granddaughters Emily Pierce and Jessica Sharp, another Past Honored Queen, and a grandson Patrick Sharp, now a Senior DeMolay. Into the hands of our Heavenly Father we commend the soul of our beloved Brother.
