1 Santa Rosa Scottish Rite Bulletin SANTA ROSA SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN Page Orient of California MAY/JUNE, 2016 VOLUME 25/NUMBER 3 A Message from our personal representative As I sit to write this message, it is approximately 36 hours since the deadline for filing most tax returns. Once again I can give a sigh of relief as I and my staff have survived another tax season. No more working 11 to 12 hours a day for nine or ten weeks straight. I did take time to attend a few special events at our Valley during tax season. The most recent event I attended was the Remembrance and Renewal program so ably done by our Chapter of Rose Croix. I am very glad I attended. It was comforting to talk with some of our brothers and reflect upon those we had lost this past year. Another event I am glad I attended was the Agape dinner so ably executed by our Venerable Master, Peter Kovachevich and his very capable group of helpers. Well done, Peter. I look forward to possibly another Agape dinner in October or November. Lastly, I would be remiss if I did not mention the excellent presentation given by Allan Casalou, our Grand Secretary of Grand Lodge at our education night in March. His subject was Masonry and religion. Brother Allan knows his subject well and was able to speak without aid of any notes and answered all questions CALENDAR OF EVENTS presented to him. Our education committee, May headed by Brother Bob Gale has given us many excellent talks on a number of subjects. I make sure I have the fourth Tuesday of most every month reserved for our education night. This is a great way to meet with our brothers and increase our knowledge of Masonry and Scottish Rite. I hope to see you on May 24 for Lloyd Abrams presentation. Also, don't forget to support our great ALL YOU CAN EAT Shrimp Feed coming up on June 18th. 2 Page 2 SANTA ROSA SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN My theme for this article is commitment. When we as individuals and especially as Masons make a commitment to do something, we should be prepared to follow through with that commitment. An excellent example of a Mason honoring his commitment was displayed on April 6 th. We had a practice scheduled for the cast of our Remembrance and Renewal ceremony on April 12th. Ron Welsh was up at Lake Tahoe and drove to Santa Rosa and back the day of the practice to fulfill the commitment he made to be part of that cast. Ron did not tell me that he had done so. Someone else told me. Regardless of the way I found out, this a splendid example of a Mason honoring his commitment worthy of imitation. We all, and I include myself, need to follow Ron s example. We did have a very nice Remembrance and Renewal ceremony on the 12 th. Four of our families were here to help us celebrate the lives of our twenty departed brothers. It really would have been nice if more of our living brothers had been here. The date of our Shrimp Feed has been changed from June 4 th to June 18 th. Tickets have been available for some time. The tickets can be purchased here in the office, from a Scottish Rite member, from Pay Pal or from Brown Paper Tickets. We have feelers out for donations for the silent auction. If you have anything that you would like to donate or know of someone that would like to donate, please inform the office. I would like to thank A. J. Printing and Graphics for the donation of a two sided sign advertising our Shrimp Feed. We will soon post it out on Highway 12. A.J. Printing prints our bi-monthly bulletin. So if you have printing needs, consider A.J. The office can provide you with their contact information. Fraternally Larry L. 5 SANTA ROSA SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN Page 5 the Children s Speech Therapy Center Accolades continue to come in about the services provided to children at the Center. The following letter was sent to the Foundation with a donation via Bank of America Employee Giving Program. John M. Samples, PhD, CCC-SLP Center Director "I want to let you know that I have been a recipient of speech services from the Scottish Rite for my youngest son, Cody. At 2 1/2, we began the doctor's recommendation to initiate speech therapy. He received some at home therapy provided through county services for about a year with very little progress. At 4, Cody was due to transition to the school system to receive speech therapy. It was during my initial meeting with our new SLP that she suspected apraxia of speech. I immediately did as much research that I could so that I could help my son. In the Fall of 2013, we began therapy through the school system, along with sessions at Scottish Rite. We saw some pretty immediate improvement. There were some difficult times throughout the process, but both SLPs who we were working with were so great and supportive. It is because of them that Cody was able to be discharged from speech therapy in the Fall of Since then, he has entered kindergarten and is keeping up with his peers. He will soon be turning 6 years old and graduating from his kindergarten class. Every day, I am grateful of the support provided by Scottish Rite and by his SLP, Kate Samples. Without her, Cody would not be as successful as he is today." Thank you! Lia Brown VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Children's Speech Therapy Center is looking for volunteers!! We need someone on Thursdays from 10 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. Duties include greeting clients, entering daily attendance, answering the phone, taking messages and light secretarial duties. 7 SANTA ROSA SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN Page 7 Stated Meeting Dinner ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ May Mark s Masonic Minute The Leadership of the Supreme Council A positive occurrence between the years in the Southern Jurisdiction was record growth in membership to 70,3452 which meant dues receipts were up as well. This also meant more work for the Grand Secretary General and Grand Commander. The new peace, after World War I, allowed the Supreme Council to take part in the International Conference of Supreme Councils. This ideal was also the cause of the pilgrimage to Mt. Vernon. When rising illiteracy, and low respect for our laws was evident, new programs were put in place. Achievement of some goals fell short of expectation due to lack of editorial staff on the New Age, and lack of leadership and materials for the educational programs. The news service was ineffective because of poor subscription rates and lack of use by the national news media. No one but Grand Commander George F. Moore had greater principles and goals for the Scottish Rite. The failure to reach these goals was comparable to that of President Wilson. The terms, when these men held office, were tainted by lack of respect of American values and a jaded feeling caused by casualties of World War I. The challenge for the Supreme Council after 1921 was whether or not it could solve the problems that lay before the Scottish Rite. The greatest achievement made by Moore as Inspector General was his leadership as editor of The New Age. His decade of leadership included experimentation that was useful in putting together a plan for success. Another of his achievements was to add Masonic symbols and quotations of the House of the Temple. This made the Temple stand out in a capital full of impressive buildings. Office of the Secretary Santa Rosa Bodies, A & A S R 600 Acacia Lane Santa Rosa, CA Address service requested Scottish Rite Officers...Could you? Would you? I am sure that all of the members are aware that the Scottish Rite is comprised of four lodges. Each of these lodges has a master, wardens and other officers just like the Masonic Lodge. Some of these are called by another name in the Scottish Rite Lodges, but they are the same. In our Valley of Santa Rosa, we have a problem. Our lodges are missing officers. One lodge, in fact, has only a master. In most of these lodges, these officers have few, if any, responsibilities or duties so that being one requires very little effort on the part of the brother. As you read this, could you find it in your heart to consider volunteering to fill one of these vacancies? It would be greatly appreciated by your brothers and would really help our Valley. In other words Could you? - Volunteer and Would you? - Serve. I would be happy to talk to you further and answer any questions you might have. I can be reached at or you could call our General Secretary, Larry Schmidt, in the office at Thank you, Doug DeForeest, 32 o, KCCH Senior Warden, Lodge of Perfection
