Allen Krause & co-editor of To Stand Aside or Stand Alone March 10 th at 9:30 am Southern Reform Rabbis of the Sixties: The Courageous Leaders for Civil Rights March 11 th at 9:30 am From the Mouth of Nashville s Pistol-Packing Rabbi : Notes from a 1966 Interview with The Temple s Rabbi William Silverman In 1966, a young rabbinical student named P. Allen Krause conducted interviews with twelve Reform rabbis from southern congregations concerning their thoughts, principles, and activities as they related to the civil rights movement. The interviewees were promised an embargo of 25 years before the interviews would be released to the public. The rabbis were extremely candid about their opinions on and their own involvement with what was still an incendiary subject. We had returned from Spain, just days before, leaving our Temple trip early upon learning of a severe downturn in her health. With just hours to spare, we were fortunate enough to be able to make it back in time to Rabbi Schiftan spend the final hours of her life at my mother s bedside at Alive Hospice, surrounding her in a family circle of love. As so many of you know, the loss of a loved one is never easy. Somehow the loss of a parent particularly one s remaining parent, immediately changes the frame of the family s life, one generation no longer defining the stability and comfort and certainty it once afforded the next generation. Overnight, they we now take on that role. We have travelled out west to mourn, to honor, to affirm and to remember a life so well lived with loving and giving. I have come to mourn for once, not as Rabbi, but rather for once as an ordinary member of a blessed family, as a devoted son. Thank you for permitting me this time, to be nothing more, and nothing less, than the grieving child of a magnificent mother. My mother Edith was a remarkable and extraordinary soul: A Holocaust survivor and refugee, who considered herself, nonetheless, the beneficiary of a wonderful life. Facing the uncertainties and traumas of wartime Europe, she and my father built a new life in America. Together, they worked hard to build and achieve the American dream. She was an incredible optimistic and buoyant soul. She treated each new day as a true blessing, she lived with a constant attitude of gratitude, she gave of herself tirelessly for the benefit of others, with a special sensitivity and sympathy and tenderness towards those in need. She loved her faith, her people and her community. She treasured her friends but most of all her family. She lived her life to give her children her son and daughter-in-law, and her grandchildren a better life...and she did. Rabbi Naomi Levy shares this prayer for the loss of a parent. I share it with you. I find it to be soothing, calming and peaceful. To those of you who have lost a parent, I hope its words provide that same measure of comfort...to you. I miss you. You gave me my life. You were my protector, my teacher, my moral compass, my comfort. I feel so alone without you. No one worries about me the way you did. No one loves me the way you did. Please forgive me for the times I caused you pain and for the times I took you for granted. I can t begin to fathom all the sacrifices you make for my sake. I want to thank you for all the ways you blessed my life. Nothing can replace the gaping hole your death has left in my life. But mixed together with all my sadness, there is a great joy for having known you. I will remember your laughter, your kindness, your generosity, your determination, your love. Thank you for the time we shared, for the love you gave, for the wisdom you spread. I will always treasure the lessons you taught me. I will carry them with me all the days of my life. I am so proud to be your child. May God watch over you and bless you, with gentleness and with love. As you blessed me. Rest in peace. Amen.

3 Hebrew: A Sacred Challenge! Every week, I have the wonderful opportunity to teach a variety of students Hebrew: 6 th graders on Wednesdays, adults on Thursday morning and 4 th graders on Thursday evening. I am constantly reminded that on the surface, Hebrew is a tough language to learn. With a different alphabet, foreign sounds and all of those books that open up the wrong way, studying the language can prove quite challenging. I am always amazed that our students in the religious school do so well with their Hebrew studies. How do they remember all of those final letters, those roots, and those prefixes and suffixes?! Rabbi Shulman Of course, to learn Hebrew, one can sit down and memorize how to read the words, how to conjugate verbs, how to build sentences, conquering all of its complexities. But in reality, this would not be enough, for the Hebrew language is more than the sum of its parts. It is more than its letters, vowels and words. Hebrew is a living language, a reflection of the people who speak it. In order to truly comprehend Hebrew, one must understand how the language echoes the culture, the history and very identity of its speakers. Hebrew is the language of a people spread into every corner of the world. It is one significant way to connect to Jews both in our own town and half-way around the world. Walk into any Jewish community in the world and you will find a shared knowledge of Hebrew. Now, I know what you are thinking: I don t know enough Hebrew, I could never speak to someone else. My response to you is, So you won t be able to have elaborate conversations, but you know more Hebrew than you think you do. My proof is in the answer to the following question: How many words in your Jewish vernacular are Hebrew? Make a list. I am willing to bet that it goes on for at least a page. How many Hebrew words do you know? Remember: Hebrew is a living language; a reflection of the culture and history of its speakers. You are a part of that culture and you are a part of that history, therefore, Hebrew is your language. Hebrew is also the language of our sacred texts. When we study Hebrew, the world of our sacred stories opens wider before us. We gain deeper access to this heritage, the source of our values and our identities. Some of these concepts and values are too difficult to translate, so our understanding derives directly from the Hebrew: tzedakah, mitzvah, bris, Torah, dayenu Complexities and subtleties can be found everywhere in the Hebrew, but one might never know it unless he or she reads it in the original. For ages, Hebrew has been called the holy tongue. It has been called this because Hebrew is the language of Torah and traditionally, has been the language of our prayers. For these reasons, Hebrew is perhaps best described as the soul of the Jewish people. So over the next few weeks, take a moment to reflect on the place Hebrew has in your Jewish life. Make a promise to yourself to learn more Hebrew- come to services on Friday or Saturday, listen to some Hebrew music, study Torah on Saturday morning or just look around our building at the Hebrew all around you! 13 Social Action at The Temple Each month we highlight an organization which receives funds through the Temple's Social Action Allocations. We Need Your Donation at The Temple Blood Drive! Sunday, April 15 th Nashville Freedom School Partnership The Nashville Freedom School Partnership was created in 2014 to provide free literacy and enrichment programming to low-income children of color in grades K-8, whose families otherwise would have little or no access to academic and personal enrichment programs for their children. The major component of their program is a free, six-week, weekday reading and cultural enrichment program, which operates during the summer. This summer, they are planning a joint conversation and shared field trip and social action project, involving students from the Gordon Memorial Freedom School (Grades 5-8) and youth from The Temple and the Islamic Center. The goal is to foster interfaith action to counter youth violence, respect the diversity, a sense of justice and equity, and understanding and cooperation between young people in Nashville. Freedom Schools are supported by grants, corporate and private donations, foundations, and gifts from community partners. Additionally, The Temple Grants have been used to help purchase books for 50 scholars from other Freedom School campuses.
