Shalom All - I hope my greetings last month for the High Holidays were not too premature when the holiday of Succoth is "just around the corner." Our editors, our officers, and our mailing committee are so efficient and eager to get all the information to you about all our wonderful programs, Ann Kessler that they belie the words in the song, "One Season Following Another" to "One Month Following Another." Anyway, in Judaism, it is never too late or too early to wish everyone Holiday Health and Cheer. And speaking of health, which is ever Hadassah's cause, the Hadassah Medical Organization is always keeping us informed of all the advances in medical research, past and present. Back in 2016, they reminded us that as a tree grows from a seed, we humans grow from an egg in the ovary. Sometimes, when ovaries fail to develop, the culprit may be a genetic mutation. This is the finding of a collaboration of scientists at Hadassah Medical Center and Hebrew University who studied a family in which four female cousins, sharing a common progenitor, presented with ovarian dysgenesis (lack of development), despite the fact that each possessed two X chromosomes. Besides the development of eggs, ovaries also function as hormone factories, so lacking sex hormones, these girls did not undergo the regular processes of puberty. Replacement hormones allowed them to reach normal height and experience monthly menstruation. The researchers searched the girls' genomes, looking for regions of genetic commonality among them that were not shared by their healthy relatives. The mutation was identified in the gene Nucleoporin 107 (Nup 107). Next, they needed experimental proof linking this mutation to the lack of ovarian development. By generating the identical mutation in the common fruit fly, they were able to demonstrate similar lack of ovarian development. In the November issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the authors explain, (continued on next page)

2 2 Continued from first page - President s Message "These results indicate a pivotal role for Nup 107 in ovarian development and suggest that nucleoporin defects may play a role in milder and more common conditions such as premature ovarian failure." This collaboration included: Prof. David Zangen, head of Pediatric Endocrinology at Hadassah Mount Scopus; Dr. Offir Gerlitz (PhD), Department of Developmental Biology and Cancer Research of the Hebrew University Faculty of Medicine's Institute for Medical Research Israel/Canada; and Prof. Ephrat Levy-Lahad, Professor of Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics at Hebrew University and Director of the Medical Genetics Institute at Shaare Zeded Hospital in Jerusalem. Their research was supported by grants from the United States Agency for International Development program for Middle East Regional Cooperation and the Israel Science Foundation. In my many experiences in life and talking with many kinds of people, I have come to understand that in some "oriental" cultures, it is customary for the old people to "just walk away into the wilderness and whence they die nobody knows." And then I think happily that in Judaism - nobody ever dies. There are constant reminders of their lives all around us, and especially telling so on Yom Kippur when Synagogues all over the world are ablaze with lights. At this time of year when our Torah remains unending - when our prayers remain unending - may we all be surrounded by those we love - by their actual presence, or in our memories, and always in our hearts. 4 4 Shofar T h e s o u n d o f t h e S h o f a r! The great sage and teacher, Maimonides, taught us the about the symbolic meaning of the sound of the shofar. Awake all of you who are asleep. Search your ways and mend them in repentence! The shofar, or ram s horn, that is sounded during Elul and for Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, is the oldest musical instrument in the continuous world. The person who sounds the shofar is called the Ba al Tekiah or (in the feminine) Ba alat Tekiah, which means master of the sound. The shofar can be made from the horn of any kosher animal. Around the world the horns of the ram, goat, antelope, sheep, gazelle, ibex and kudu can be used. The horns of cows, calves or oxen do not qualify as shofarot because they are connected with false worship in the time of Moses while the horns of oxen are called keren, and technically are not shofarot. The original Sephardic shofar is straight with no curves while the typical Askkenazi shofar is curled or bent. The shofar can be sounded once a day for the month of Elul and during Rosh Hashanah services for a total of 129 blasts. The names of shofar sounds are, tekiah, shevarim, teruah, and tekiah gadolah. The original name for Rosh Hashanah was Yom Teruah the day of the sounding of the shofar! Shana tova u metukah A good and sweet year to you!
