Each individual, including children ages 13 and over, receives one green ticket for all of the holiday services. Guest tickets, for those who have ordered them, are individual, all-holiday or one-day tickets for each day of Rosh Hashanah and for all of Yom Kippur (Kol Nidre through Neilah). Note the schedule of services on the back of your ticket. If you have not received the appropriate ticket or tickets, please call the Tikvat Israel office at Please note that tickets are required for each family member age 13 and over for entry into the building during the holidays. Everyone must come in through the main entrance. Please show your ticket when you enter the front door. If you do not have your tickets when you arrive, you will be asked to check in with the security guard to the right of the entrance. The ticket policy stated above will also apply to all guests. Children under the age of 13 do not need a ticket, but we do ask that they be accompanied by a parent when they enter or leave the building. If children are in babysitting or attending any of the youth services, they must be registered in advance; please use the enclosed form or contact the Tikvat Israel office to do so. This packet also includes information about and, where required, forms for Additional Guest Tickets; Youth Services, Family Services and Babysitting information; Sisterhood Programs; Book of Remembrance, Memorial Plaques, Shana Tova Greetings, Lulav and Etrog and Mahzorim; and Home Hospitality. Please note that there will be only one Erev Rosh Hashanah service this year. It will be held at 6:00 pm on Sunday, October 2, and will be conducted by Rabbi Shull and Cantor Helzner. On Sunday, October 9, at 10:30 am, Rabbi Shull and Cantor Helzner will join with other congregations in conducting a community memorial service at Judean Memorial Gardens On the reverse of this letter is important information about the holidays, including parking details. We have also included in this packet information about this year s Tashlich observance, which will feature a special StoryWalk along the Rock Creek Park pathway for families with young children. Our Clergy, Staff and Volunteers have worked hard to ensure a meaningful and safe Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for everyone. If you have questions about any aspect of the High Holiday services, please (office@tikvatisrael.org) or call the office ( ). Our best wishes to all for a Happy, Healthy and Sweet New Year. Shana tova. Sincerely, Sam Freedenberg Executive Director Enclosures: High Holiday Tickets Additional High Holiday Forms and Synagogue Information A Conservative Congregation Affiliated with USCJ

2 PARKING TIKVAT ISRAEL CONGREGATION HIGH HOLIDAY INFORMATION The parking lot at Tikvat Israel is not big enough to accommodate the large High Holiday crowds, but we are fortunate to have use of additional large parking areas next door and across the street. Please look at the following schedule to see which parking lots are available, and do not use a parking lot other than those listed for a particular service. You may park on neighborhood streets (but not in the townhouse developments across from or behind the synagogue). Please drive and park carefully and judiciously. Remember as well that there are speed cameras on Twinbrook Parkway and Baltimore Road. Erev Rosh Hashanah and 1st Day Sunday Evening and Monday Morning/Afternoon, October 2-3 Rockville High School The entire lot will be available for parking. 2nd Day Rosh Hashanah Tuesday, October 4 Limited parking at Rockville High School school is in session, but you may use any open space after 8:30 am. Please drive and park carefully. Asbury / Korean Church across the street and slightly uphill from Tikvat Israel. Most of the lot will be available. Please leave spaces for church staff in front of their building, and be careful when crossing Baltimore Road. Kol Nidre Tuesday, October 11 Rockville High School. The entire lot will be available for parking. Yom Kippur AM and PM Wednesday, October 12 Rockville High School. The entire lot will be available for parking. We will mark several extra spaces in our lot for Handicapped Access. Also, as the TI lot fills up, be considerate of those who may need to park closer to the synagogue. If possible, please park farther away. SERVICE NOTES Tikvat Israel s Social Hall, which serves as our High Holiday sanctuary, will have a look similar to the past two years. For a more participatory experience, the center of the stage will again be extended out into the Social Hall, and seating will be configured in a U shape around this lower bimah extension. The transition zone in the back of the Social Hall allows worshippers who are coming into the room at a point when seating is not permitted, such as during the rabbi s sermon or during a Torah reading, to feel more a part of the service than they would have if they were in the lobby. We will also have a cuddle zone a place near the entrance for young families to be together. Side Trips: There will be Side Trips (alternative discussions and experiences for adults and teens) in other locations in the synagogue on Yom Kippur. Look for a sheet with times and locations when you enter the synagogue. Details about these sessions will be published via shortly. Honors: If you receive a bimah honor, please arrive before the time indicated on the letter indicating your honor (which you will receive in a separate mailing). On Yom Kippur, wearing leather shoes is traditionally avoided. Cloth slippers are provided for those who want them. Manna Food Drive: As you enter the synagogue for Kol Nidre on October 11, please give your bagged Manna food drive donations to the designated volunteers at the table to the left of the main entrance. Mahzorim: To guarantee that everyone at our services will have a Mahzor (High Holiday prayerbook), please return yours to the table in the lobby when you leave the service. If you wish to purchase Mahzorim for personal use, please contact the office. Tashlich: Join us for a StoryWalk featuring PJ Library Selection Tashlich at Turtle Rock followed by a family-friendly Tashlich in nearby Rock Creek Park. Families are invited to gather at Tikvat Israel Congregation promptly at 5:00 pm so that we may walk together as a community from the synagogue adjacent Rock Creek Park. We will cross Baltimore Road and continue along the paved pathways traversing through Rock Creek Park to our destination at the Tashlich Bridge inside the park. As we meander along the path, adults and children can stop to view and read aloud from the enlarged pages of the Story. Walk with family and friends and enjoy the story unfolding as you take more and more steps to the bridge. Families are encouraged to bring a small amount of breadcrumbs for ceremonial casting away of poor choices from the previous year into the moving Rock Creek flowing underneath the bridge. Adults and children are also encouraged to bring a Shofar and join in a communal sounding of the shofar during the Tashlich service. Families with young children may wish to bring strollers for their youngsters as it is about a 20-minute walk to the bridge, and then they will need to walk back to the synagogue after Tashlich. Those with mobility limitations often find the 20-minute walk from Tikvat Israel to the bridge to be very taxing. As an alternative, we suggest entering the park at Greenspan Lane and Parkvale Road or at Linthicum Street and Marcia Drive. From either entrance it is just a short distance to the bridge.

7 Tikvat Israel Women s Network TI s Sisterhood 2200 Baltimore Road Rockville, Maryland Rabbi Benjamin Shull Cantor Rochelle Helzner Dear Women of Tikvat Israel! It s time to renew your membership in Tikvat Israel s Women s Network or to become a member for the first time! TI s Women s Network connects you to a wonderful network of women committed to learning, supporting one another, enhancing the mitzvot in our lives, and providing support to the Tikvat Israel community and the community-atlarge. Please join us in making the Women s Network a strong vibrant component of Tikvat Israel! Often, we see other women at TI but don t know them. The Women s Network creates events so that we can learn, inspire each other, and create lasting connections. There s no better way to get to know other women of all ages who are part of the TI community than through the Women s Network. Our programs this year will focus on the Torah Fund theme of P ri Yadehah, which means the fruit of her hands. It is a phrase from Eishet Chayil and found within the Book of Proverbs. This year we celebrate women s achievements through creativity the fruit of her hands in the home, workplace, synagogue, and community. We are planning multiple events to reflect this theme, including our Come Meet the Women of TI annual membership tea on October 30th! We will again have something for everyone this year, including the continuation of the book club, Rosh Chodesh programs, social action events, a Women s Network Shabbat, opportunities to network with other Sisterhoods in the area, and more. Look for our annual Women s Network bookmark at High Holiday services for more information. Our 1st Book Club event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 19th at 7:45 in the TI Library - Join us to discuss Washing the Dead by: Michelle Brafman Get-To-Know Sisterhood Members TEA - Sunday, October 30th, 11:00 AM - Home of Janice Balin (15424 Narcissus Way, Rockville) We are designing programs this year to engage women of all ages and to work with the other TI committees that support education, community service, and more. Our Sisterhood is truly a Women s Network that provides opportunities for women to really get to know each other in our wonderful TI community. We hope you will join us this coming year so that we can continue to grow and contribute. You can still be a member for only $36 for the year, which supports our Women s Network and the Women s League for Conservative Judaism (WLCJ). This year, we also are offering a Sponsor Membership Level of $54, which further supports costs associated with our many activities. We hope you will join. We also hope that you ll support the Torah Fund, which provides funding for religious education. For membership, please mail your check and registration form to Janice Balin, Treasurer, by October 15, (See specifics on the attached application.) If you are a new member of Tikvat Israel, you will receive FREE membership in the Women s Network this year. Just fill out the enclosed form and indicate that you are a new member. To contribute to the Torah Fund, please complete the form and send your information and check to Barbara Katz. Even if you can t attend all our programs, please support the Women s Network by sending in your dues. We would like to keep most of our programs free or at minimal cost to members so your support is important. The benefits of membership, as stated on the Women s League for Conservative Judaism website, are to be informed, be enriched, be involved, and be inspired. Now is the time to support those efforts for yourself and your sisters at Tikvat Israel by joining the Women s Network. We look forward to a wonderful year together! Thanks so much for your support. B Shalom, Janice Janice Balin Treasurer and Membership Chairperson
