1 Friday Services start at 7:30 PM Saturday Services start at 10:30 AM September, 2017 A Reform Congregation Volume 13, Issue 2 FROM THE RABBI The commandment to love the stranger, to be kind to the stranger, to welcome the stranger, appears in the Torah thirty-six times, more than any other mitzvah. The following anecdote appears in the book, A Code of Jewish Ethics, by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin: Professor Stephen Carter, an African-American, tells of an incident from his youth, when his parents moved from an African-American neighborhood to a white one in Washington, D.C. Carter remembers how uncomfortable he was about the move. Sitting on the front steps of his new house with his brothers and sisters, we waited for somebody to say hello, to welcome us. Nobody did.i knew we were not welcome here. I knew we would have no friends here. But Carter s fears and trepidations were set at ease by one person who, it turned out, was a religious Jew: All at once a white woman arriving home from work at the house across the street from ours turned and smiled with obvious delight and waved and called out, Welcome! in a booming confident voice I would come to love. She bustled into her house, only to emerge minutes later with a huge tray of cream cheese and jelly sandwiches, which she carried to our porch and offered around with her ready smile, simultaneously feeding and greeting the children of a family she had never met and an African-American family at that with nothing to gain for herself except perhaps the knowledge that she had done the right thing. We were strangers, African-American strangers, and she went out of her way to make us feel welcome. The woman s name was Sara Kestenbaum, and she died much too soon, but she remains, in my experience, one of the great exemplars of what is best about civility.she managed in the course of a single day to turn us from strangers into friends, a remarkable gift that few have.to this day, I can close my eyes and feel on my tongue the smooth, slick sweetness of the cream cheese and jelly sandwiches that I gobbled on that summer afternoon when I discovered how a single act of genuine and unassuming civility can change a life forever. Welcoming strangers is a great mitzvah. Someone cannot be a good Jew and a good human being if he/she is not welcoming to strangers. Mary and I wish you a shana tova. A good year. Rabbi David Weissman Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

FROM THE PRESIDENT: Dear Members & Friends, It is with great pride that I write this article for our September bulletin. This bulletin covers the months of Elul, the last month of the Hebrew calendar and Tishrei, the first month of the Hebrew calendar. These are the months that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur fall. This year we will be celebrating our thirteenth High Holy day services. It is with joy that we should look back at our beginnings, our hopes for a Reform Temple with the right ideals of a Jewish place of worship, A Reform Congregation which meets the needs of Reform Jews in Myrtle Beach. Over the years we have welcomed many visitors from all parts of the United States. Our doors are always open to those that wish to join us at this special time of year, as well as all year round. This is a good opportunity to say thanks to those that work so diligently to keep Temple Shalom functioning so well. I know you all join me when I say a special thank you to Rabbi David Weissman for his leadership and the services he conducts so well. As this new year of 5778 approaches I will take this opportunity to say to each of you, If I have done anything this past year that was hurtful to you, If you felt that I slighted you or spoke slander against you, I apologize and I ask your forgiveness. I also ask forgiveness for any mistakes that I committed by speaking out of turn. I look forward to greeting each of you at Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur Services. Ze'ev & I wish each of you, above all, a year of good health, a year of prosperity, a year filled with family and good friends. L'Shanah Tovah Tikatevu Lily Ann Revitch

3 3 S'LICHOT SERVICE, SAT., SEPT. 16, at 8:00 P.M. S'lichot is a warm-up for the High Holidays. The evening will begin with a social hour followed by the S'lichot service. The evening will end by 9:30 P.M. Those attending are asked to bring a snack to share (cookies or cake or potato chips or pretzels or nuts or fruit, etc.). ONEG NEWS Well, the summer is gone, and so are the crowds! I, for one, will be enjoying the beach and lessened humidity September brings. Dave and I wish everyone a healthy and peaceful High Holiday season. The oneg dates available for the rest of 2017 are: October 6 and 13 November 24 December 15 and 22 If you are forward thinking-there are plenty of dates available for 2018! Any questions, just let me know. Flo Pflaster dfp324@atmc.net FIRST ADULT ED. CLASS AT 7:30 P.M. ON WED., OCT. 25 There will be no preconceived Jewish topics in this year's Adult Ed. program. At each session, those attending will be given an opportunity to ask about or bring up for an open-ended discussion any topics relating to Judaism that interest them. There will be ample opportunity for input by Rabbi David and by those attending the class. In talmudic times, a group of rabbis would gather together to discuss a topic of Jewish concern and their discussion of this topic would lead them to consider other related, and sometimes not so related, topics. We will use this talmudic format as our model. Nothing will be off the table. The object will be to make Judaism more relevant to our lives. Adult Ed. classes will be held once a month at 7:30 P.M. on a Wednesday evening beginning on October 25th. You will be notified of the dates of future sessions by . Each session will last for an hour or perhaps longer, if discussions become extensive. Everyone is invited to attend.

8 8 SISTERHOOD NEWS I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable summer! Our Board has been busy planning another exciting year of events and programs for all of us to enjoy. I want to thank my Board for all their hard work, time and support to make Sisterhood a success. At the annual meeting in June, Sisterhood made a sizeable donation of $3, to the Temple, thanks to the efforts of Sisterhood and the support of the entire Congregation. Thank you! We had our first Sisterhood Membership meeting in August, where we reconnected after the summer break and signed up for the various fundraisers that are currently available to all members of the Temple. It was a pleasure to see so many of you in attendance. I want to thank Wendy Margulies for providing me with an inspirational message to read, after which we had a short business meeting. We all socialized while partaking in the delicious refreshments and signing up for our ongoing fundraisers. Thank you Cookie Brenner and Bobbie Guseman for running our fundraisers New Year s Cards, Attractions Books and Challah/Honey Cake Sales. Natalie Kramer and Irene Klein will be chairing the Break the Fast again this year. Please sign up if you haven t done so yet.
