Dear Hadassah Friends - As the out-going president, this last article for the Chai Lites was going to be a reminder of all the medical wonders that our Hadassah Hospitals perform with all the money we so generously give. But have also discovered that the more one researches on any given subject, the more illuminating, interesting connecting facts come to light. While once again downsizing my household and trying to determine which books Ann Kessler I can bear to part with, I came across one - Great Jewish Personalities in Modern Times published by a B nai B rith Series: Volume II. Out of the eleven persons covered, only one was a woman. And that woman was Henrietta Szold. And not only was I pleased that it was she who was chosen, the author brought back other connecting pleasant facts. Tamar De Sola Pool is the author and whose husband, Rev. Dr. De Sola Pool, was a great theologian and philosophical thinker - authored many books, and often in collaboration with Tamar. For connecting factors, Lee, my deceased husband worked at a drug store in Bay Shore, Long Island before he owned his own pharmacy, Every other weekend in the summer, he ferried over to Fire Island, an area of Ocean Beach to be exact, to manage the only drug store on the island located directly across from the leading dock. Abie (pronounced with a long a ) was the telegrapher in office located directly across from the drug store,. Long before cell phones existed, Abie was the messenger of the island. Everyone knows that Fire Island was the summer getaway for every type of artsy person that included many famous celebrities. Abie, as the official messenger, knew every one of them that stepped off that ferry and made it a point to know everything that transpired on the island.the Rev. Dr. De Sola Pool and his wife were two such celebrities (and at one time Abie tried to arrange a debate between Dr. Pool and Herman Wourk that never materialized). Since the pharmacy was open much later than the last ferry to Bay Shore, Lee would stay in Abie s lodging house (sometimes me too), and it was there that Abie gifted me with the many fine writings of Dr. Pool. All our chapter members are familiar with how Henrietta Szold, after passing her 40 th birthday, was finally bitten by the love bug of the heart. When her intended jilted her, her health and will to live were shattered and it was only by the loving care of friends, and a trip with her mother to Europe AND her first pilgrimage to the Land of Israel, that renewed her desire to serve others and Zionism became her way of life. According to the article in the book mentioned above, Henrietta s life was an extremely active and productive long before her 40 th birthday. She was born in Baltimore, MD on December 21, 1860, the oldest of eight children, and the daughter of Sophie Schaar and esteemed Rabbi Benjamin Szold; an active and vocal abolitionist. Henrietta s zest for righteousness came from both her parents, and she remembers being taken, at the age of four, to see the funeral cortege of Abraham Lincoln in which her father marched. It was from her father that she learned Hebrew and the Scriptures. Their home became a welcoming center for many immigrants that were streaming into the country, particularly from Russia. Since her early teens she had become a teacher of German, French, English, algebra and botany in a fashionable school in Baltimore. It was with (continued on next page)

2 2 Continued from first page - President s Message this background along with her great humanitarian spirit, that lead her to make history by establishing the first Night School in Baltimore for immigrants - one of the first in the country. At seventeen, Henrietta Szold also became a journalist! In 1888 at age 28, Henrietta, with her own predilections and with a small company of leaders, realized that the rising and prospering Jewry of America required a parallel spiritual development of Jewish learning and culture. Hence was the birth of the Jewish Publication Society of America, and, after later moving to Philadelphia, she served simultaneously as its editor, translator, talent scout, and public relations counselor. Quite coincidentally and surprisingly, inside the cover of the aforementioned book, was an undated letter (no envelope) from the Jewish Publication Society advertising its latest Hebrew book, it s cost and where to obtain it. At the bottom of the aged yellowed page, was a reminder of the new offices of the Society as of January 1, 1931! And, after the long list of the publication committee members was the name - Henrietta Szold!). After her father s death in 1902, Henrietta moved to New York with her mother - across the street from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where she enrolled in classes and became a renowned, respected, and beloved scholar amongst the faculty as well as the student body alike. It was in New York that she joined a Hadassah Study Circle banded together for Zionist study. It was upon her return from that first pilgrimage to Israel (sponsored by a gift of money in recognition of her long services to the Jewish Publication Society ending in 1916), aroused by the disease and misery she had witnessed, she communicated to this group her sense of need for practical health work in Zion. And on Purim, February 24, 1912, in the vestry rooms of Temple Emanuel of New York, the group constituted itself as - Hadassah, New York Chapter of the Daughters of Zion. Miss Szold set up an ethical code for voluntary service. Henrietta Szold became the architect of practical development from a clinic in a shack by the side of the road, which opened in 1912, to a Medical School for the Hebrew University and Hadassah. Being awarded a modest life annuity thus freeing her from earning a living, she performed tirelessly every task in between those two achievements of above: organization of staffs, equipment and supplies, and making sure every aspect of medical care was achieved. Henrietta s concerns were not limited to only Jews. The Arab question troubled her deeply and she performed many of the same tasks to aid them while making sure that Hadassah hospitals and clinics were freely open to all who needed service. Within the broad compass of Henrietta Szold s work, however, the primary place was ceded to children. During the spring of 1933, she travelled through Palestine with her sister Bertha, on a farewell tour before returning to her family in the United States. It was that spring that Hitler came to power. In the summer Chaim Weizmann was appointed the head of German immigration into Palestine, and Miss Szold was asked to take charge of the children. She never left Israel again organizing all sorts of aid to children from Youth Aliyah to Young Judea, and she was elated when Hadassah entered into partnership with Youth Aliyah. The only thing that Henrietta ever lamented was that she never had children of her own, as she once confessed that, no career, whatsoever it was, could compete for primacy of motherhood in a woman s life. Henrietta Szold died at the age of 84 on February 13, No encomium was spoken about her when she was laid to rest on the Mount of Olives. All Jerusalem marched in solid procession up the mountain behind her bier. A Youth Aliyah child recited the Kaddish. Thirty days later, at a memorial service for Henrietta in Carnegie Hall in New York City, many American leaders paid their tribute. Of all the eulogies, perhaps the best description of her life was a passage read from the Book of Job: I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless who had none to help him. He who was about to perish, blessed me. I caused the widow s heart to sing for joy. Righteousness was my garment and justice my robe. I was eyes to the blind, feet to the lame, a father to those in need. I searched out the cause of those whom I did not know, I dared reach out to the fangs of the wicked and pluck the victims from his grasp. Shalom, shalom to all of you - Ann

We will be talking about Chanukah memories as everyone had a lot to say on that subject at our December Board meeting. The dedication that we feel to our faith and to Israel should last all year long. We will talk about the why of some of the customs associated with the holiday, such as playing dreidel (which has nothing to do with money). We will also discuss topics of interest which members might want to cover during the year. One that I like is the Jewish History of Florida. Hint: It didn t start in Miami Beach. Please come with your Chanukah memories and your suggestions for future meetings. We will be collecting the yearly fee of $12 for the Study Group at the first meeting. 6 STAND UP AND SPREAD LIGHT Ellen Richter This past Hanukkah, many American Jews who had never previously worried about lighting a menorah in their window found themselves facing a new fear, a fleeting thought that the candles would put their own family s safety at risk. It has been several months since 11 Jews were massacred at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. In New York since then, two men were attacked in separate incidents; a Holocaust scholar found swastikas outside her office; a Jewish 9 year old was punched; Brooklyn Union Temple was defaced with Die, Jew Rats. At Duke University, a swastika defaced the wall above a mural dedicated to the Tree of Life victims. For some younger American Jews, these horrific acts of hate have brought home the very real threat of anti-semitism for the first time, as the ADL reports a staggering 60% rise in the rate of incidents. With each Hanukkah candle that was lit in Dec., we marked the determination and the tenacity of the Jewish people and the defiance of the Maccabees as they reclaimed the Temple. November 2018 marked the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht and 2018 marks 25 years since the community in Billings, Montana rallied after white supremacists threw rocks through the window of a 6 year old child who had a menorah in his window. The local newspaper printed a menorah for everyone to hang in their windows. Billings stood by its Jewish friends then, just as hundreds came together to light a menorah outside the Tree of Life Synagogue. The light is the message, Rabbi Jeffrey Myers said. This is the time to stand up and spread light! Hadassah, The Women s Zionist Organization of America, Inc., spreads the light 365 days a year. We spread the light from generation to generation, by leading efforts in support of national legislation to ensure future generations don t forget the crucial lessons of the Holocaust and the importance of standing up against hate. Currently, we are mobilizing our 300,000 members/ supporters in every congressional distract to ADVOCATE of behalf on the NEVER AGAIN EDUCATION ACT, legislation to provide schools with access to curriculum for students to learn about the Holocaust. Hanukkah is the story of the perseverance and tenacity and a celebration of the rededication of the Second Temple. Hadassah is the story of empowering women to stand up bravely for our Jewish values that build a r e s i l i e n t a n d e n d u r i n g c o m m unity. We must not stop spreading the light. Let us celebrate the miracles and the wonders of our community, forever against hate, intolerance and divisiveness.
