1 IN THIS President's Message, Calendar of Events, Membership New Member, Temple Library, Religious School News, Levine Bat Mitzvah, Rabbi Gevirtz Fund e Yahrzeit List,Announcements JAMAction YIZKOR SERVICES IN DAYTON There will not be morning Yizkor services on May 26 for Shavu' ot at Temple Sholom Individuals wishing to attend these services may go to Temple Israel in Dayton for their 10:30 am services However, in keeping with Reform tradition, the Temple Sholom office will be closed on May 26 in observance of Shavu' ot YOU ARE INVITED There will be a special Oneg held after the 8:00 pm service on May 14 in honor of Rachel Crossley and her acceptance at Hebrew Union' College Rachel will spend her first year as a Rabbinical Student in Jerusalem and will be leaving towards the end of June Please let Rachel know how proud we are of her and wish her well as she begins to fulfill her desire of becoming a rabbi RABBI'S MESSAGE "Chapter 9 Shirley - Just Bring Home a Pizza" Dear Friends, I hope that you are intrigued and perhaps a bit curious about the heading that precedes my message It comes from the wonderful book, 40 Things You Can Do to Save the Jewish People by Joel Lurie Grishaver While the book describes itself as "some really practical ideas' for par- ' ents who want to raise 'good enough' Jewish kids to insure that the Jewish people last at least another generation:' it does much more than that It offe~s common-sense solutions to many of the problems of being Jewish in this generation for everyone, not just for parents Frankly, we often get so tied up in those images of the "perfect" (which we equate with the "only") way to observe Shabbat-or any of the holidays or other Jewish practices-that, if we cannot duplicate them, we feel that we cannot observe the practice The thrust of this chapte~ is to suggest that we differentiate between "spark" and "shell:' Sometimes to maintain the "spark" (that is, the essence) it may be necessary to cut back on the "shell" (that is, the outer form) So what does this have to do with the title, "Shirley-Just Bring Home a Pizza"? Shirley is a single mother with one son Her son goes to Saturday school at the Temple and she attends services As she explains it, "We can make the Sabbath day happen - but I can't seem to get Friday night together:' OnFriday evening, after picking up her son at school and after a long week at work, she cannot get together an elaborate' meal on a table set with linen and good dishes But isn't the essential element of Shabbat dinner the opportunity to enjoy dinner together peacefully? And thus the answer-"shirley-just Bring Horne a Pizza:' Keep the ideal of a table set with fancy china on a white linen tablecloth with homemade chicken soup, etc, as a goal But in the meantime, don't let that ideal become an impediment Celebrate the essence of Shabbat as best you can Our world is much different than it used to be We may not be able to practice in precisely the same way as our parents before us did Be creative; determine what the core is and observe it as best you can, even if it means pizza for Shabbat dinner -Rabbi Judith A, Bluestein o
