1 MARCH/APR IL ADAR/NISSA NIIYYAR PUBLISHED BI -MONTHLY VOL. 7 ISSUE 2 - SPRINGFIELD, OH SUNDAY, MARCH 4 10:00 A.M. TEMPLE SHOLOM Megillah Reading followed by... ()~f l'fr? e Gj?a1'aJeY tta'fr?artf~~ JI()~~Y a1'rtiva~y As my father and grandfather before me, I will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah Saturday, May 5, 2007, loam Please join with my family and me in ceremony and celebration at Temple Sholom. -Quinn Enrique Leventhal RABBI'S MESSAGE First seder is Monday, April 2nd, and the second seder (we will hold a community seder on the second night here at Temple Sholom) is Tuesday, April3rd. This is one of the five holy days ordained for us in the Torah, and more Jews celebrate Passover than any other holiday. In the Torah, we are commanded to refrain from eating" chameti' for seven days. (Orthodox and Conservative Jews have added an eighth day for Jews living outside Israel.) The first and last days of Passover are to be special holy days on which no work is done (for Orthodox Jews outside ofisrael, this is expanded to include the first two and last two days). "Chameti' is usually translated as "leaven:' but that is not a very accurate translation. Since Judaism is so much a religion of "doing:' the rabbis are always very careful to try to understand what it is exactly that God is telling us to do or not do. So, they ask, "If God doesn't want us to eat chametz, of course I will obey, but first I need to know what exactly is chametz? " They answer with a very specific definition: chametz is anything which includes at least one of five specific grains (wheat, oats, barley, rye, spelt) that has come in contact with water and been left standing for eighteen minutes. From a chabad website: "The Sages established that the time necessary for the fermentation process to take place is eighteen minutes after water has been added to the flour; i.e., if water is added to the flour and nothing else was done to the mixture for eighteen minutes, the mixture becomes chametz. "The time when the mixture is being processed, kneading and rolling it out, is not part of these eighteen minutes. However, once the dough has been kneaded, we are careful not to leave it for a moment. By kneading it or otherwise working with it, the fermentation process is delayed and the mixture will not become chametz" Of course, individual Reform Jews choose to observe this commandment in various ways. Reform Judaism can be summarized as "informed choice:' To be informed, one must first know the biblical commandment. Next, one should learn how the rabbis understood it, and how Jews throughout history have observed the commandment. Finally, how do (Rabbi's Message-cant. an page 2)
2 Rabbi's Message-cont. from Page 1 liberal Jews today interpret and follow this commandment? Once informed, each Reform individual decides for him or herself how to observe the commandment to abstain from chametz for Passover. Some Reform Jews only avoid "obvious" chametz, such as bread and cake. Others might avoid any grain products that are not marked "kosher for Passover:' Some Reform Jews might observe Passover in much the same way as an Orthodox Jew does, and yet others might make idiosyncratic decisions, like eating pizza with flat crust but not with risen dough. My brother jokingly suggested once that, since one explanation given is that the Israelites didn't have time to let their dough rise, we should eat only from fast food restaurants, and only from the drive-thru! That would be the modern equivalent of eating with our staff in our hand and our loins girded! However you decide to observe this commandment, may your observance deepen your connection with God, the Jewish people, and your appreciation of the responsibilities of the freedom won for us 3,500 years ago. Six SPORTY members worked on cleaning the basement lounge, customizing T-shirts, and watching the movie Paperclips before pitching sleeping bags in the small sanctuary. We would like to plan a three-day trip to Tennessee to visit the school and exhibit featured in the Paperclips movie. We again met on Sunday, February 25, and continued our clean up on the lounge as well as finalized some plans for future meetings. Temple teens who would like to find out more about SPORTY should contact Kim Fish, adult advisor, or Rabbi Janice. SOCIAL AalON NEWS Make 71t,U Nijkt Diffor~ As Passover approaches, please share this celebration of freedom with those who remain enslaved by hunger and poverty. Contribute to MAZON the money you would have spent to feed one extra person at your seder table. These dollars raised in the American Jewish community, in part through this annual Passover appeal, have transformed MAZON into one of the country's largest private funders of domestic anti-hunger programs. As we say "Let all who are hungry enter and eat;' consider a contribution to MAZON and-give real meaning to that invitation. Envelopes are available for your contribution on the table in the Temple foyer, or you may donate online at can help make a difference to ~th~e United States, in Israel, and in developing countries worldwide. PURIM "Mordecai wrote down these events. And he sent writing to all the Jews... near and far, charging them to observe the 14th and 15th days of Adar every year... as days of feasting and merry-making, and as an occasion for sendingfood gifts to one another (mishloach manot) and presents to the poor... The Jews undertook and irrevocably obligated themselves and their descendants, and all who might join them, to observe these days in the manner prescribed and at the proper time each year." Esther 9:20-22,27 Purim this year falls on Sunday, March 4th (erev Purim is Saturday eve, March 3). We at Temple Sholom will celebrate with the reading of megilat Esther followed by a costume parade, hamantash nosh, and Purim Carnival on Sunday morning, March 4th, beginning at 10:00 a.m. There are four main commandments associated with Purim: 1) hearing the megillah read 2) sending gifts of food to one another (and since the plural is used, the rabbis say that means at least two food items to at least one recipient) 3) giving gifts to the poor (can be money) 4) rejoicing and making merry! We will do all four on Sunday morning! Bring money to donate to Interfaith Hospitality Network to fulfill the mitzvah of gifts to the poor. And bring a modest basket or gift bag of cookies, fruit or candy with your name on it. Each adult and child who brings a "mishloach manot" basket will take one home, so we can all do the mitzvah. It is a "mishloach manot" exchange! Kids will trade with kids, adults with adults. HAPPY PURIM!
