1 Rallllrillessa Dear Friends, Our tradition states, "Mi-sheniknnas Adm; marbim be-simchah,": "When the month of Adar arrives, we greatly increase joy." Purim, in fact, is the one time during the year when the rejoicing is not limited by sacredness. For example, we do not have the prohibitions associated with the Pilgrimage Festivals, Pesach, Shavuot, and Sukkot. We celebrate by reading the megillah, the scroll of Esther. Every time we hear the name of Haman, the villain, we make noise to drown it out. We celebrate with costumes,nruasquer.wdes,plays,and~es.purim is a day when everything is topsy-turvy, recalling a story in which Esther the Jewess dressed up as a queen and Mordechai put on regal garb. We eat hamentaschen. Other mitzvot include a festive meal on the afternoon of Purim, sending gifts of food to friends (mishloach-marwt) and giving money to the poor (matanot le-evyonim). The month of Adar also leads us to the spring and Pesach. With the Exodus from Egypt we became a people. But we celebrate not only the freedom from slavery b\lt also the freedom to be Jewish, for God instructed Moses to tell Pharaoh, "Let My people go that they may worship Me." Each year during the seder we relive that redemption from slavery to freedom; each year we are reminded that not just our ancestors alone, but we, too, were 'brought out of Egypt. Rebirth and hope are at the core of Pesach as well as the springtime in which it occurs. like all festivals, Pesach is a time for remembering those in need. Supporting Mazon or the Second Harvest Foodbank is a fitting way to prepare for Pesach. I look forward to sharing these two occasions with you. Put on a costume, grab your gragger, and join us as we engage in the unbridled joy of Purim and join us for seder on the second night of Pesach as we share in that timeless journey from freedom to redemption. 2 PBESIDEIfn.ESSIGE The last few months have been very busy as well as challenging for your Temple Board. We are doing our very best to hold things together and not let things "slip through the cracks." As each day goes by, we are even more aware of all that Rabbi Gevirtz did on a daily basis, much of which we took for granted. It is not easy to operate a Temple, so if we forget something or something is not done the way it should be or has been done in the past, please be patient with us. We are giving our best effort. The Rabbi Search Committee, headed by Faye Flack, is busy at work. The input and feedback we have had from many of you is greatly appreciated and will help the Search Committee as they move forward. The annual Congregational meeting has been set for Sunday, April 25th, at 7:00 p.rn. I hope everyone will attend as this will be a very important meeting -/"QuriB t-evbnrao( 1l1li III II...
