1 SHABBAT PASSOVER (INCLUDING YIZKORJ SERVICE Salllrdoy, Apn1 30,, 0:00 AM Followed by pot-luck Passover nosh/kiddush (wine, matza, and coffee will be supplied). With singing! Shabbat Zmirot, Passover songs, camp and Israeli songs. GETTING TO KNOW YOU Saturday, May '4, 0:00 AM The dozen who attended this interactive Shabbat experience in February really enjoyed it and asked that we do it again! So, on Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m. we will have a brief Shabbat service followed by a structured activity that will give us an opportunity to get to know one another with a little more depth. Nothing that would make anyone uncomfortable! Coffee and cookies, too! NEW TRUSTEES ELECTED The new officers of Temple Sholom's Board of Trustees who were elected at the annual Congregational meeting on April 17 are Stan Bernstein, Faye Flack, Alan Goldstein, Mark Kossoff, and Fred Leventhal. Laurie Leventhal, Marj Newman, and Gary Zaremsky remain as Board members and will help to provide a smooth transition for the new members. We would like to thank Steve Broidy, Rick Krauss, Gabriele Leventhal, and Fran Rickenbach, whose terms on the board have expired. We appreciate your dedication and hard work on behalf of the Temple membership. We look forward to the coming year, and thank the new Trustees for their willingness to serve. RABBI'S MESSAGE S/UIYJiot EyCj SJiulfj.:JJixC f2 Shavuot is one of the least widely-observed holidays today, though it is a biggie in the Torah, where it is one of the three pilgrimage festivals along with Passover and Sukkot. In the Torah, Shavuot is an agricultural festival. But for the past couple of thousand years, we have celebrated it primarily as the day on which we received Torah at Mount Sinai. The Torah tells us to literally count the days from Passover to Shavuot. "Shavuot" means "weeks:' and it comes seven weeks after the first day of Passover. We begin counting the orner on the second day of Passover. We count seven times seven days- 49 days. The next day, the fiftieth, is Shavuot. The counting underscores the connection between the two holy days. The reason God liberated us from slavery in Egypt was only so we could come to Mount Sinai. Liberation from physical bondage is not, in itself, enough. It was merely a prelude to our spiritual liberation, when we accepted upon ourselves the "yoke of the mitzvot:' The message of the counting of the orner is surprisingly relevant today. We can look, for example, at Iraq. The physical liberation from the tyranny of Sadam Hussein was not enough! Only when the Iraqi people come to their own "Mt. Sinai:' when they have acquired a solid legal and ethical foundation through a constitution and a transformation of their society through the rule of law and democracy, will they truly be free. We will stand again at Mt. Sinai this year on Sunday evening, June 12. Look at your June Update for details of our program for that evening, but please save the date now! -Rabbi Janice B. Garfunkel BOOK DISCUSSION ON MAY 25 Wednesday May 2S has been selected as the date for our book discussion beginning at 7 p.m. The book for discussion is The Trouble With Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith by Irshad Manji. Manji speaks with passionate love and hope for Islam, believing that democracy is compatible with its purest doctrine. Can Islam be reformed? Does it need to be? Do we have a role to play? Join us for an evening of lively discussion. RSVP to Temple requested. o

I have copies of my b~etin articles for social action from August Since spring of 2000, I have been involved in JAM and have represented our Temple as "Social Action Chair:' The work has been rewarding. The Temple's involvement has been good for JAM, but more importantly for the Temple. We have worked with others who did not know what a Jew was, let alone know a Jewish person. Our numbers at JAM events have always been proportionately high. But the time has come to move on. I am not leaving the Temple, the community, or JAM; and I am not becoming less involved in issues. Just the opposite; I am becoming more involved in the community. Therefore, it is time to let someone else replace me as Social Action Chair and the Temple's spokesperson to JAM. How can I thank Rabbi Gevirtz (may she be proud of what she started), Rabbi Garfunkel, Laurie Leventhal, Anna Krauss (my right hand for so long), and our JAM Team-Barb Bernstein, Priscilla Dixon, Natalie Cornez, and Larry Turyn (and Bernice Goldman before her move)! I will be here to assist my replacement whenever asked. 9't Iuu bf:f;}{ a Lv'(5 timf:... -Paul M. Cornez, Social Action Chair COME DO A MITZVAH MAY 15 Please help fellow Temple volunteers assemble care packages filled with toiletries and hotel amenities on Sunday, May 15, from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. These mitzvah packages will be donated to homeless and other shelters in Champaign, Clark, and Greene counties. A pizza lunch and refreshments will be provided preceding the sorting and packing. Donated dessert would be appreciated. Skill level required: Any age and the willingness to spend a couple of hours at Temple doing a good deed for the less fortunate in our community. Please call Anna Krauss at if you can help (we need a head count to order pizzas). MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY We will be working on the new Membership Directory during the summer and would like to know of any changes in address, telephone number, or e mail address for our members.
