1 Uoyd R. Goiciman Racbi VOLUME VII BULLETIN MARCH 1991 Temple Sholom 2424 North Limestone Street Springfield. Ohio ( ADAR-BISAB 5751 A WORD TOGETHER A few days ago we commemorated the festival of Purim. It is an extremely interesting festival. Most scholars feel that the Book of Esther lacks historical credibility. Nowhere in this short Biblical story is the name of God mentioned. The main character is Esther. Esther, you recall, becomes the ~ueen when Vashti looses favor in the king's court. We don't know too much about Esther. One salient fact however is that she must have been ~uite comely, winning her ~ position on the basis of her good looks. Yet this beauty pagent winn 7 ~ actually rises to great moral grandeur, willing to sacrifice her life for the deliverance of her people. There is a lesson to be learned from this. Who would ever expect a beauty ~ueen to exhibit such strength of character? What the character of Esther proves to us is that everyone does have the capability to face any momentous decision that presents itself. All of us can harness latent fortitude when we deem it necessary. We can become Esthers in our own life situations. Let us realize this in the months and years ahead. Rabbi Lloyd R. Goldman Affiliated With The Union Of American HebreU1 Congregations

3 The Rabbi would like to initiate an Adult Hebrew class, teaching basic reading skills. If interested contact the Rabbi or the Temple office. What We Can Do for Military Personnel Serving in the Gulf National Sisterhood has called to our attention that Jewish military personnel need our special support. The Temple office has a list of U.S. Chaplains who will be pleased to receive cards and letters to be distributed among Jewish personnel. The list represents the various branches of the service. In writing please note that the military rank of the Chaplains should be used and not the words "chaplain" or"rabbi.", Perhaps children in the Sunday School would like to vrrite letters to th~ military as a project. HOMELESS PROJECT Three Temple members participated in feeding a small number of homeless at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 21st. Since the project has been recently organized, the social service agencies have not screened most of the applicants so this month very few are being served. We will be called upon in two months again and several of our members have volunteered to help. If you are interested, call Maxine Leventhal.
4 ART AUCTION The 1991 Art Auction will be held on Sunday, June 2, The auction is one of the Temple's biggest fund raisers and therefore we need everyone's help. We have tried to involve most of our members in this activity. If you have not received a letter with a specific assignment, and want to be included, please call one of the co-chairs, Irene Klaben at or Phyllis Nedelman at If you have a specific assignment, please try to fulfill fit. Some people are being asked to do several things, but if everyone helps, no one will be unduly burdened. Remember we all have an obligation to support our Temple through our attendance, our time, and our money. By participating in the art auction you can have fun while helping the Temple. * * * *** * * * CONGRATULATIONS to Herb Si lverman on being selected as a recipient of the 1991 Out st anding Engineer and Scient ist Award by the Engineering and Science Foundat ion of Dayton in conjunction wit h the Affiliate Societies Council.
