4 Dr. Robert Ellis God, Germany, the Jews and the Holocaust January 4, 11, 18 and 25, 2017 at 7:00 pm This course explores the causes and consequences of what was arguably the most horrific event in all of history. Topics include both the long-term origins of the Holocaust in European racism and anti-semitism and the more immediate origins in the dynamics of the Nazi state and the war against the Soviet Union. Particular attention will be given to debates and controversies, including the motivations of German and non-german perpetrators, bystanders and collaboration, the place of
5 the Jews and non-jew in Holocaust historiography, the continuities of racism and genocide and their comparability and the consequences of the Holocaust for memory and world politics. We will engage with a variety of topics, including nationalism and nation-building, revolution and reaction, industrialization and urbanization, mass politics and culture, Germans roles and experiences in two world wars, Nazi racism and genocide, and the theological implication of the Holocaust for contemporary Jewish thought. GENTLE YOGA The next session of yoga is on Tuesdays, January 10 through February 28 at 7:00 pm The cost is $160 for all sessions Contact: yoga@avodatshalom.net

11 PURIM SHPIEL AUDITIONS Due to popular demand, the TAS Players will be presenting a Purim Shpiel for the Third Straight Year!. This year's show is "THE REBBE OF OZ" and opening (and closing) night is Sat., March 11. If you'd like to act in the show, please come to auditions on Monday, Jan. 9
12 at 7:30 pm, or Sunday, Jan. 15 at 9:30 am. If you are interested in a singing part, please be prepared to sing a short song of your choice. For more information, contact Andy Lieb at talentshow@avodatshalom.net Sypnopsis: Esther is a young, college educated single, trying to make it in the city as a female professional, under intense pressure from social media, parents and peers. Wishing she could return to simpler times, when expectations were more reasonable and everyone knew their role, Esther tells Auntie Vashti that the whirlwind of her life is overwhelming, and that she knows in her heart she needs to make a few changes. One day, Esther gets onto the D train and emerges, not at the 34th street station, but in Oz!! Her wish has come true, but not nearly in the way she has expected it to!! The Munchy-Kins greet Esther with great fanfare, giving her a dress, a head scarf and a pair of red boots. They recognize that she could be the one who could lead them out of the terrible situation and persecutions they have been experiencing thru the Wicked Warlock Haman s decree to abolish all the Synagogues in Oz. Ever resourceful, Esther realizes that she must lead the charge to the Rebbe of Oz, to stop Wicked Warlock Haman from achieving his goal. They point her in the right direction and tell her to follow the Mandel Bread Road to the Rebbe! Along the way, she meets a scarecrow wearing a crown of gold (Ahasueros), a man made of Tin (Chris Christie?) who lacks a heart, and, of course they meet up with a cowardly Lion (Roar-dechai). The four new friends continue along the Mandel Bread Road until they, well, you have to come see the show to find out the rest. TENTATIVE CAST LIST Esther (Dorothy) Auntie Vashti Scarecrow (AKA Ahasueros) Tin Man Cowardly Lion (AKA Roar-dechai) Munchy-kins The Rebbe of Oz Haman (Wicked Warlock of the West) Good Witch or Warlock
