1 The Asbury News News and information for the residents of Asbury Heights November 2015 Toys for Tots Asbury Heights is participating in this year s Toys for Tots campaign. You can help less fortunate children experience the joy of Christmas. For your convenience, toy donation boxes will be placed in the following areas: Asbury Heights reception area; Asbury Villas entrance hall; Asbury Place and The Embassy. Only new and unwrapped toys will be accepted. On Saturday, December 5, we will be holding a Stuff A Van event with one of Asbury s vans from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Please join us at Asbury Circle (the main entrance) to drop off your toy and watch the fun as we try to fill the entire van with toys. All toys from the donation boxes will be added to the van at this time. Resident Town Meeting Tuesday, November 24 1:30 pm Hickman Chapel Please join John Zanardelli, President & CEO, and the Senior Leadership Team at the annual Town Hall Meeting so they may share Asbury s goals and outlook for the coming year. 2 November 2015 Annual Halloween Costume Contest Residents and employees gathered in the Mall on October 30 for Asbury s annual Halloween Parade and Costume Contest. This year, a pumpkin carving/decorating contest was included. Rachel DeVries arrived as the Wicked Witch from The Wizard Oz, complete with green makeup (right). Chuck George showed up as The Phantom of Asbury. The Finance Department won $50 in Asbury Way Café gift certificates for their group KISS costume. As for the pumpkins, Michelle Benner s scaredy cat carving won for best carved pumpkin while Lynn Gallo and Kris Hauge s cat and mouse pumpkin won for best decorated. Both entries won $25 in Asbury Way Café gift certificates. Special thanks to Eat n Park for providing Smiley Cookies for everyone. Model Apartments as Guest Rooms Oftentimes, our model apartments are requested by family members visiting from out of town, usually for weekends or holidays. Because more people are touring Asbury during these times, we need to show these apartments to prospective residents. Therefore, we can no longer reserve model apartments for out-of-town guests. 3 Independent Residents Create a Book of Memories for the Holidays Angels Among Us The Asbury Angels is a group of Independent residents whose mission is to promote healing of body, mind and spirit to fellow residents and others who may be ill or in need. This group has been blessed with several Angels who share their skills and talents in many ways. Whether visiting residents, knitting or crocheting, baking or crafting, each shares a common purpose serving the needs of our community with generosity, joy and enthusiasm. Do you have boxes and boxes of old photos? Precious memories packed up and stored away? Kristina Hauge, Independent Living Activities Assistant, can help you design a professionally-bound book of photos to give to your loved ones this holiday season. Contact Kristina at to schedule a time to create your personalized book. Participants will only need the photos they already have. The Angels have been very busy getting ready for the holidays. In addition to lap blankets, shawls, chemo and preemie caps, they are now making pet beds for the adoptable animals at Animal Friends (see photo above). On November 29 we will begin to decorate the chapel for Christmas in the Hanging of the Greens Service, and Dr. Harvey will preach on Questions of Christmas: Why Am I So Unhappy? based on Luke 21: Second Sunday of Advent Sunday, December 6 10:00 am Asbury Villas 11:00 am Hickman Chapel Sermon: Questions for Christmas: What Do I Really Need for Christmas? Luke 3:1-6 Christmas Poinsettias may be ordered beginning Sunday, November 15. All orders must be returned to Dr. Harvey via the Campus Mail or in the Offering Boxes each Sunday by Sunday, December 13. Cost per plant will be $9.00, as in the past. 5 Healthy Habits for the Holidays SeniorFit has a new incentive called Healthy Habits for the Holidays. Different hand-outs, activities, and events, will be occurring from now until the New Year. Pumpkin Patch Walk Our SeniorFIT Department held a special program on Halloween - a Pumpkin Patch Walk! Similar to a scavenger hunt, this program got residents moving as they searched for various pumpkin cutouts throughout the building. Walking regularly helps improve balance and decreases the risk of falls. As residents went on their walk, they used their vision and vestibular systems (located in the inner ear and responsible for balance) while looking for the different items on the checklist. To kick start our Healthy Habits, (for residents only) SeniorFit will be having Turkey Trivia starting November 16th through Thanksgiving Day. There will be different trivia questions each day that will be asked at the beginning of each exercise class. The purpose of the Trivia is not only to encourage Seniors to come to SeniorFit, but also to exercise their minds in addition to their bodies! Finally, SeniorFit will have a unique bulletin board this month to give thanks (see left). This activity is called Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart. Residents will be able to come into the Fitness Suite find a paper heart on the window sill and write what he or she is thankful for in ONE word. They will be able to submit their thanks anonymously and in a few days they will be able to see their submission on the bulletin board outside the fitness suite in a unique form for everyone to see! This unique, interactive bulletin board outside of the SeniorFIT Suite gives you the opportunity to give thanks! 5

6 November 2015 Turkey Bowling And Other Fowl Things! Wednesday, November 25 Mall 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Walk to End Alzheimer s Get a strike and get a chance to win a $100 Giant Eagle gift card! Every player is a winner! All participants will receive a prize. Over 20 people walked for Team Asbury Heights during this year s Walk to End Alzheimer s at Heinz Field on October 24. The team consisted of employees and friends of Asbury. Asbury is the expert when it comes to caring for those living with Alzheimer s and other types of dementia, but in an ideal world, those diseases would not exist. Thank you to everyone who participated by either walking or donating to the flower gardens around campus. Your commitment to the cause shows that you support a world without dementia. 6 Resident Bank The Resident Bank is being discontinued. Instead, on Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm, residents can see Michelle Benner (Room 4310) or any other member of the Finance Office to cash checks.

7 Giving Changes Lives News from Asbury Foundation The Angels Are Coming... And so is your final opportunity to join the 2015 Frances Hamilton Society! Your gift will support the core of our mission - our Benevolent Care program. This program is designed to help offset the cost of care when one s resources have become limited. Because of your generosity, residents won t ever feel the worry of not having a place to call home. Watch for your Angel Ornament, arriving to your mailbox during the week on November 23rd! During the holiday season, the Angel Tree, located in the Main Lobby, is a nice way for residents, families and friends to remember a loved one, or to let someone know how special they are all while helping others! Your gift, large or small, will make a difference to many of our residents. If you would like to make a gift and place an Angel on the tree, please contact Asbury Foundation at The Employee Holiday Fund Each year we receive requests from residents, families and friends of Asbury about how they may be able to express their thanks to our staff during the holiday season. In response to these requests, in 2004, we established our Employee Holiday Fund. You may know some of our staff members quite well, but there are many staff members whom you may seldom come in contact with who also have an impact on helping to operate Asbury Heights. Many services are shared between the different buildings and departments and teamwork is important to the efficient operation of Asbury. If you would like to make a contribution to the fund, please contact Courtney Kartman at or ckartman@asburyheights. org. This gift is considered a gratuity, and therefore, is not a tax deductible contribution. The deadline to donate to the 2015 Employee Holiday Fund is December 1, Donations received after the deadline will be applied to the fund for

8 November 2015 Asbury Aglow 8 Wednesday, December 9 5:30-7:30 pm Campus-wide Asbury Aglow is our annual holiday celebration. All employees, residents and families are encouraged to participate. This year marks the 20 th anniversary of this much beloved evening. Some of the entertainment will include Renewed Memories (a salute to the Ed Sullivan Christmas Special), violins, an a cappella quartet and a candy bar for the kids. The kids will also have an opportunity to visit Santa Claus and create holiday crafts to take home. It s a great start to your holiday season!
