1 Lesson 5 Review and Quiz 1 Use this checklist to review for Quiz 1: I know the meanings of the study words. I reviewed all the We Remembers in Section 1. I reviewed all the exercises in Lesson 4. When you are ready, ask your teacher for Quiz 1. SECTION 2 Lesson 6 Paul Finds a New Helper Paul and Barnabas stayed with the Christians in Antioch for about a year. Then one day Paul said to Barnabas, Let s go visit our brothers in the cities where we preached on our journey. We need to see how they are doing. Barnabas agreed to go. He wanted to take John Mark with them again. But Paul did not think it was a good idea. John Mark, Paul reasoned, left us when we had barely started on our journey. He did not help us with the work. Barnabas was determined that John Mark should go. Paul refused to let him go along. Back and forth the two friends argued. Neither man gave in. Finally, they decided to go their separate ways. Barnabas took John Mark and sailed to Cyprus. Paul 21

2 Lesson 6 chose Silas to go with him to Asia Minor. Now, instead of just one missionary team, there were two. The Bible tells us very little about Barnabas and John Mark after this, but we do know that John Mark became a faithful preacher. The bad feelings between Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark did not last. Paul spoke well of John Mark in later years. Paul and Silas began their journey. Through Syria, across the mountains near Tarsus, and on to Derbe and Lystra the two men walked. They stopped here and there to encourage the believers to always love and trust God. At Lystra, they met Timothy, a young Christian who loved Jesus with all his heart. His mother was a Jew, but his father was a Gentile. As a child, Timothy had learned about God from his mother Eunice (yüånis) and his grandmother Lois. They taught him to love God and His Word. The believers of Lystra and Iconium spoke so well of Timothy that Paul asked him to come along on their journey. Timothy agreed to leave his home and be Paul s helper. He worked with Paul for many years, and the two became like father and son. Paul, Silas, and Timothy made their way across Asia Minor. They visited the churches to encourage the believers. At each place, they read the letter from the church at Jerusalem. Its message caused much joy among the believers. They readily agreed to do what the Jewish Christians had asked, and the number of Gentile believers grew every day. 22

5 Lesson 7 Christianity Comes to Europe Paul, Silas, and Timothy traveled through Iconium and Antioch in Pisidia. Then they walked toward the Aegean (i j7åßn) Sea. At some places where they wished to stop and preach, God s Spirit told them to keep traveling. And so the missionaries moved on. At last the three arrived in Troas (tr9åaz), a city on the shore of the Aegean Sea. That night Paul had a dream. He saw a man standing on the land across the sea. Come over to Macedonia (mas ß d9ån7 ß) and help us, the man pleaded. Paul was certain this was God s way of calling him to preach the Gospel in Macedonia, a country in Europe. It was across the sea from Troas. Paul wasted no time in answering the call. He, Silas, and Timothy bought tickets on the next ship to Macedonia. By this time, a fourth man had joined Paul s group. Luke, a doctor and writer, was Paul s good friend. Paul and his three friends boarded the ship at Troas. Two days later, they arrived in the city of Neapolis (n7 apå ß lis) on the shore of Macedonia. From there they quickly walked to Philippi (filå i p8), one of the country s main cities. Few Jews lived in Philippi, and there was no synagogue. On the Sabbath, Paul and his 25

6 Lesson 7 friends went to the river outside the city. They had heard that the Jews met here to pray. Only a few women had gathered on the riverbank, but the size of the group did not stop Paul from sharing the Gospel. He sat down and talked to his small audience. One of the women, Lydia (lidå7 ß), was a Gentile who already loved God. But she had never heard the Good News of Jesus. She listened carefully to Paul s words and accepted them by faith. One of the missionaries baptized her along with her family and servants. Lydia was a wealthy businesswoman. She sold purple cloth or dye which came from the faraway city of Thyatira (th8 ß t8å rß). Her home was large with plenty of room for guests. She wanted to do something for Paul and his friends. If you think of me as a faithful follower of the Lord, she begged, please come to my house and stay there. While Paul, Silas, Timothy, and Luke were in Philippi, they stayed at Lydia s home. Christianity had come to Europe. 26

9 Lesson 8 One Freed and Two Jailed Study Words dungeon: (dßnåjen) an underground room where prisoners are kept stocks: (stäks) wooden frame with holes for feet and hands While at Philippi, Paul and Silas and their friends went daily to the river to pray. One day a young girl with an evil spirit followed them. These men are the servants of the Most High God, she shouted. They have come to show us how to be saved! This girl s evil spirit told her some of the things that would happen in the future. Of course, people are curious about the future, so many of them paid the girl to tell what would happen in their lives. But she did not get to keep any of the money, for she was a slave. The money she earned went to her masters. And she had earned a lot of money for them. Satan and his evil spirits know a lot of things. They know who loves and serves God. They also know that God s power is greater than theirs. This evil spirit recognized Paul and his friends as men who loved God. It knew that they had come to tell people how to be saved. Probably it wanted to draw attention to the missionaries so that someone would stir up trouble against them. 29
