B H FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 VOLUME 5 ISSUE St., Edmonton, AB T5N 3L1 Phone: Fax: menorahacademy.org ~ office@menorahacademy.org M e n o r a h A c a d e m y w a s transformed into an Israelistyle marketplace to celebrate Tu B Shvat, the new year for trees. Visitors, volunteers, students and staff were treated to an all-star event full of exciting activities and delicious food, including Chef Eddie s delicious falafels. Thank you to all of our dedicated staff and volunteers who truly made this event exceptional! In a far, far away galaxy In a far, far away galaxy, a school celebrated an extravaganza in honour of their current school theme, Shabbos takes us out of this world. A gym full of stars, planets, astronauts, ships and aliens, the students, teachers, parents and special guests gathered to be entertained by Edmonton s finest, Dudu the Clown. A Spaceship/ Moon jumpy castle filled half the gym, a gigantic Velcro darts game was set up next to it, and an Alien Invaders game delighted the children (and adults too). Thank you to our parent volunteers, our Grade 4-12G girls, Mrs. Segal, Rabbi Sass, Morah Daniella and Ms. Scheelar. It was an event that was truly out-of-this-world! 2 PAGE 2 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 5 ISSUE 7 FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 In Science 9, we have been studying inheritance and DNA. To help us learn the structure of the DNA molecule, we built our own. The boys had a great time assembling their DNA! For working hard and completing sefer shoftim, it was decided that we'd celebrate by taking a trip to a trampoline park - jump360. The girls had a blast jumping on all sorts of trampolines, swinging on a rope and flopping into an air pit, as well as enjoying their free fountain drink. Mazel Tov Grade 4/5 Girls. Keep up the great learning!!!! Students are not the only ones always learning! In our quest to stay on the cutting edge of education, we regularly offer staff professional development days. For our General Studies staff, Sherri Johnston from Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium, introduced our teachers to Project Based Learning. Project Based Learning provides an opportunity for different learning styles to flourish as it offers many mediums and skills that can be adapted to different abilities. Rabbi Weinrach, Rabbi White and Rabbi Sass presented as well. It was an incredible morning of learning! 3 FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 5 ISSUE 7 PAGE 3 Mrs. Mandel and Mrs. Cashman treated our Kindergarten students to a memorable field trip to Snow Valley recently. Students were then given the task to write about their experience. Here are a few excerpts from their memory book:
PAGE 4 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 5 ISSUE 7 FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 Menorah celebrated Rosh Chodesh Adar and decorated the school to celebrate Purim. Themed activities and art projects decorated the hallways, doors, heads and faces! Happy Purim Menorah Family!
FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 5 ISSUE 7 PAGE 5 ART CLUB Parent Council would like to thank all the families and our awesome volunteers, Mrs. Lee, the Grade 12 Girls, Ms. Scheelar, Mrs. Friedman and Rabbi Blachman, who participated in our Afterschool Clubs Winter Edition. Everyone had a great time! If you can volunteer your time and talent to our Fall Afterschool Clubs, please contact your Afterschool Clubs Committee at afterschoolclubs@menorahacademy.org See you next year! MULTI-SPORTS GLEE CLUB Ms. Mitchell s Grade 6/7 Girls have been working on a project to increase kindness within their classroom and school. These Random Acts of Kindness were rewarded with a trip to the local skating rink. Interactive Navi Class Grades 6/7 girls interactive Navi class with Rabbi Salter, who are in the midst of learning the story of King David and his rebellious son Avshalom, took a break in the lead up to Purim to study through Meggilas Esther. The lessons have shone new light onto the old text and will hopefully give us a greater appreciation when we go to listen to the Meggila in Shul. As we read, translate and comment on the story, we try to take out lessons that we can apply to life. On Thursday, March 9th, we are going to give the girls the opportunity to show off their knowledge and present, rap or act their favourite part. Tu B Shvat decorations, activities and lessons were held through-out Menorah to celebrate the New Year of Trees. Pre-Kindergarten held a special birthday party for Tu B Shvat and hosted a delicious fruit Shabbos party to help celebrate. Other grades wrote poems and stories based on the holiday. Several bulletin boards were beautifully decorated with innovative, colourful trees that always brighten our month!
PAGE 6 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 5 ISSUE 7 FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 There is always lots of fun and learning in Kindergarten! In honour of Tu Bishvat, we learned about the Shivas HaMinim - the seven special fruits/grains of Eretz Yisrael. We created our own beautiful books displaying the Shivas HaMinim, and we loved to read them together! In response to Family Day, we learned the Hebrew vocabulary words for our family members. We created beautiful and colorful "Mishpacha Sheli" pictures, displaying our families with the corresponding Hebrew titles for each person! Now that Purim is upon us, we had a great time dressing up and acting out the Purim story! We have created our own Megillos with a watercolor painted scroll, our pictures, and Hebrew subtitles! What a great combination of literacy, drama, and art! In HighLIGHTS last time we wrote about the new and exciting Zimra project making special Benchers and decorated holders for the girls to take home in order to grace their Shabbos tables. The finished products are out! The girls are delighted with their work and can't wait for the next project. This week, the girls made delicious Hamantaschen to bring home to their families. 3D Shapes: Prisms vs Pyramids The grade 3 students had an incredible time in their geometry math unit exploring the attributes of 3 dimensional shapes. Through building and creating shape skeletons out of clay and toothpicks, we were able to clearly see the number of edges and vertices a shape is composed of, as well as, visualize the difference between prisms and pyramids. Great work grade 3! Gemara Hockey Grade 6/7B played what was probably the first ever gemara-hockey game in Menorah history! Each player's face was represented on the hockey rink broadcasted on the smartboard. The players were only able to advance the puck if they successfully answered a question on the gemara - and the other team could not. The game was the c u l m i n a t i o n o f 2 weeks of review of all the gemara the students had learned since embarking on their gemara journey last year.
FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 5 ISSUE 7 PAGE 7 Kindergarten celebrated their 100 th day! What a milestone along the path to learning! We counted our footsteps in the hallway. We learned that it was 20 footsteps to our classroom from the recess door and 100 steps to the computer room. We counted by 10s to 100 and counted backwards to 0. We coloured 100 crayons and learned that we can count by 25s and by 5s. We coloured with pastels and created 100 rainbow fingers on 20 rainbow hands. We made necklaces with 100 beads. On Day 101 The Kinders worked on their building unit. They used wooden sticks to build 2-dimentional shapes (square, triangle, rectangle) and identified the sides and points found on the shapes. Their challenge was to build a cube using sticks and plasticine. There was a lot of trial and error, but they were able to create a cube. Davening Stars The winners of the 'Davening Stars' competition were privileged to an amazing trip to the Ice Palace at WEM. Eighteen students joined by Rabbi White, Rabbi Glatt, Rabbi Mandel and Rabbi Salter, ventured down to the mall to enjoy an exciting morning rewarding those who take Davening so This week in Math, our Grade 4/5 boys built 3D houses and calculated the surface area. They did this project as the conclusion of their unit on measurement. They also started our unit on fractions. Grade 4 students have been identifying fractions and looking at comparing them, where as grade 5 students have been looking at comparing fractions, equivalent fractions and ordering fractions. Pre-K likes to practice their aleph bais with mess-free finger painting! seriously every day. It was incredible to see the boys technique and agility on the ice. The trip concluded with delicious pizza from Cafe Levi. A great time was had by all. (A huge thank you to the Ghermezian family for sponsoring this trip.)
PAGE 8 MENORAH HIGHLIGHTS VOLUME 5 ISSUE 7 FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2017 For the completion of the Makos in Chumash class, Grade 4/5 was given the opportunity to use their creativity and put together a Makos Fair for grades 1-3. Each girl was given two makos and had to come up with an activity to do with their maka, as well as create a poster for their booths. The girls had a great time this past week preparing for it and had an even greater time running it. Well done girls!!!
