7 1. God Creates All At the beginning of each creation, there is only God. There is no universe, no stars, no worlds. Then the one Supreme God, Siva, creates everything. He makes the heaven worlds of the Gods and the angels. He makes the world of men. He makes countless other worlds. He makes the stars. He makes the sky. He makes the day and the night. He makes the land and the sea. He makes the plants. He makes the animals and the people. He speaks out the Vedas. God makes these all out of Himself. He did not make these out of nothing. He made them out of His Love and Truth. God is within everything He creates. There is no place that He is not. Who was there in the beginning? What were some of the things God made? What did He make them out of? Is there any place that God is not? Can anyone else create the universe? Did God make all things? Yes, God Siva made all things. Is God Within all things? Yes, God Siva is within all things. 1

11 2. God is Forever God is always God forever and ever. Supreme God Siva always lives. He has no beginning. God will always live. He will not stop living. He will never have an end. God will never die. God always was, and He always will be. We can see God Siva. He has a spirit body. This is not a body like ours. Usually we cannot see a spirit, but sometimes we can. God Siva is here whether we see him or not. He is in all places. He is everywhere at once. He is in the heaven. He is on the earth. He is in our hearts. He is everywhere. Siva is my most loving and tender Father and Mother. He created my soul in His image. He loves me and wants me to go to heaven. God Siva is so wonderful that He does not need anything to make Him better. This is why we say God is perfect. Our soul too is perfect, just as God is perfect. In all the universes there is not one thing which is not perfect because it is all God. When did God become God? Will God Siva ever stop living? Where is God? Did God have a beginning? Why do we say God is perfect? Is there anything in the universe not perfect? Who besides God is perfect? Everyone and everything is perfect. Where is God? God is everywhere. Who created my soul? God Siva created my soul. 5

15 3. God is Everywhere and in All Things God made our souls, this world and everything else. He does anything and everything. Nothing that Supreme God Siva does is hard for Him to do. It was not hard for Him to make heaven and earth. It was not hard for God to make everything out of Himself. God knows all things. With His Third Eye He sees all at once the entire universe, all the worlds and every soul. He sees all at once the past, the present and the future. God knows what we think. He knows what we do. He knows what we say. This is because He is within us. He sees us and everything we do. He hears us and everything we say. He knows when we are good and when we are bad. But He never becomes angry with us. He never punishes us. He can never leave us. God knows all things. We can not hide anything from Him. God can see us, whatever we do, or wherever we are. We cannot hide from God, because He is within us. He is our loving mother and father. We do not want to hide from Him. He is with us always. What can God do? Was it hard for God to make everything out of Himself? What does God know? What does He see with His Third Eye? What does God know about us? Is God Siva inside us? What can God not do? Does God do everything and anything? Yes, God does everything and anything. Does God ever become angry with us or punish us? No, God never becomes angry with us or punishes us. 9

19 4. Devas and Asuras God made all things. God made our souls out of Himself. He is the Mother and the Father of our souls. Our soul lives first in the Sivaloka, the World of God. Then in the antarloka, the world of the angels. And now in the bhuloka, the world of men. Most of the souls in the world of the angels are very, very good. They are the devas. A few, called the asuras, are bad. They are bad because they do not follow God s law. They know what is good, but they do not do it. That is called sin. God does not punish the asuras. He does not put them forever in hell. But the asuras do suffer. They suffer their own karma. Whatever wrong an asura does comes back to him. He hurts someone. Later someone hurts him the same way. That is the law of karma. Good action returns good action. Bad action returns bad action. Finally the asura learns not to do bad things. He becomes a deva and lives in heaven. No soul is permanently an asura. There is no such thing as the devil. There is no Satan. Who made the devas? Who is the Mother and Father of our soul? How did some souls become bad? What is it called when we don t follow God s law? What is karma? What finally happens to the asuras? What is sin? Sin is not following God s law. Does God punish the asuras? No, they suffer their own karma. Is there a devil? No, there is no devil. 13

23 5. My Soul Supreme God Siva created my soul. He has created all the souls. God is my Mother and my Father. He created me in His image. He created me out of His Love and Truth. My soul is perfect, just as God is perfect. But my soul is young. It has to grow up. I have a young physical body. Over a short time it will grow to be an adult like my mother and father. In the same way my soul is young. Over a very long time it will grow to be like God Siva. I do not yet know that I am perfect, just as God is perfect. By God Siva s grace we live many lives. We get different bodies. Sometimes we are a boy, sometimes we are a girl. We can live in one country one life, and another country in the next. Each life is like a school class. A certain lesson is taught. If we learn the lesson, we go on to the next higher grade. If we do not learn, we go back to the same class. And if we forget and do bad things, we can go to lower grades and have to take all the same lessons over again. If we live a good life, then we get a better birth next time. If we live a bad life, we can get an even worse birth next time. If our life is just average, we get the same kind of birth again. Many, many lives do we live in this way. Each life we try to be wiser. Each life we try to be more religious. Each life we try to be closer to God Siva. Who created your soul? Is your soul perfect? Is your soul young? Why do we live many lives? What happens if we do good things in a life? What happens if we do bad things in a life? How do we get a better birth? By doing good in this life. 17

It is His nature to create souls like me, just as it is the nature of a flower to bloom, or of a tree to give forth seeds to create more trees. Water evaporates from the ocean. It becomes clouds, then rain, then rivers and finally it returns to the ocean. The water of the river becomes one with the water of the ocean. It is the nature of ocean water to evaporate and become rain. God is like the ocean. It is His nature to create souls. My soul is like the rain. I too will eventually return to the ocean, to God. As the water in the river became one with the water in the ocean, so too will I become one with God. Supreme God Siva loves me. He loves me when I am good. He loves me even when I are bad. Always God loves me. God s grace takes care of me all the time. He gives me my parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles. He gives me a deva for my very own. This good deva is called my Guardian Deva. God is good. He wants me to be with him in the Sivaloka some day. He wants me to become one with Him. That is why God made me. God is always with me. What can I do to be closer to Him? I can pray to Him, work for Him, play for Him. I must know Him, love Him, serve Him. I must do everything for Him. I will be good because I want to be one with God some day. God loves me. I love God. Who made you? What has God done for you. What does God know about you? What can you do to be closer to God? He is a soul like me, but in-between births. He might be my great-grandfather or grandmother or another ancestor assigned to watch over me in this life. My Guardian Deva is near me day and night. He loves me. My Guardian Deva wants me always to be a good child of Lord Siva. He is near me when I play, when I study, when I sleep. He sees me all the time. He protects me. He usually will not talk to me. But I can feel him. He helps me know what is the right thing to do. He helps me know when I am doing a bad thing. Always he tries to help. He never tries to trick me. My Deva protects me from danger. He chases off the asuras which might come to hurt me. He helps me with my schoolwork and exams. I do not want to do bad things such as become angry, fight or steal. If I do, it is difficult for my Deva to see and help me. I can most easily pray to my Guardian Deva in the home shrine. I light a lamp and incense. I ring the puja bell. He hears the bell and sees the light. I sit very quietly, and he will come to my side. I do not need to speak, or even to think. I just feel his presence. Then he is able to help me more. He will help me be good and closer to God. Who is your guardian deva? Is he in-between births? What is his duty? Does he try to trick you? What can you do to make his job difficult? How can you contact your Guardian Deva? What does your Guardian Deva do for you? He watches over me, helps me, protects me from danger and makes me closer to God. 25

35 8. The Three Bonds God created our soul. Like God, our soul is perfect. But we do not know this. It takes many lives to learn that we are perfect just as God is perfect. It takes many lives to know that we are one with God, just as the river is one with the ocean. By God s grace, our soul is created with three bonds. These three bonds prevent us from knowing that we are perfect. The first bond is anava. The second is karma. The third is maya. Because of anava, we mistakenly think we are separate from God. That is our soul s first bond. Because of karma, whatever action we do returns to us: good for good, bad for bad. That is our soul s second bond. Because of maya, we believe this world of form in which we live is real. We think it is different than God Siva. This is our soul s third bond. The three bonds are God s grace to protect our soul when it is young. They do not let us stray too far from God. The purpose of our life is to advance spiritually. Gradually we overcome the three bonds to become closer to God. The three bonds are not Original Sin. They are not bonds caused because we or our ancestors did something wrong, or broke God s law. The three bonds are not the work of the devil. The three bonds are not God s punishment. God does not love us less because we are held in these three bonds. How long does it take to know we are one with God? What are the soul s three bonds? What is anava? What is karma? What is maya? Are the three bonds caused by breaking God s law? Why did God give us three bonds? To protect us when our soul is young. What is the purpose of life? The purpose of life is to advance spiritually. 29

39 9. Dharma Dharma is God s law. When God created the universe, he created laws to govern it. Those laws govern everything from the stars in the sky to the rocks beneath our feet. Those laws govern us too. If we follow those laws, we become a better person. We advance spiritually. We make sukarma, good karma. If we do not, we do not become a better person. We make kukarma, bad karma. We do not advance spiritually. There are four kinds of dharma: Universal Dharma (Rita Dharma) is God s intelligence within the physical universe. Look at the order of nature. The coconut tree always yields a coconut tree. A lotus always creates another lotus, not a rose. Social Dharma (Varna Dharma) is how we should live in society. It is our duty and responsibility to other people. It governs our occupation in life. It governs our duty to our country, to our community and to our family. Human Dharma (Ashrama Dharma) is that we live our life in four stages. First we are a student. Then we are a householder with a family. Then we become an elder advisor. Finally we spend fulltime in religious study and practices. Personal Dharma (Svadharma) is our personal law. Our personal dharma is the best way to live our life. It depends upon all our past karmas. It depends upon the country, race and family we are born in. Our teachers and elders can advise us what is best for us. What is dharma? Why do we follow dharma? What is Universal Dharma? What is Social Dharma? What is Human Dharma? What is Personal Dharma? 33

43 10. Karma Karma is a central principle of Hinduism. It is the law of cause and effect, or of action and reaction. We say that karma is a law of the mind, just as gravity is a law of the physical world. We throw a stone in the air. Because of gravity, the stone comes back to the earth. We do a good action. Because of the law of karma, a good action comes back to us. We do a bad action. By the same law, a bad action comes back to us. We say we create karma. Karma is not quite like gravity, where the reaction is immediate. It can take a short time or a long time for the reaction to come back to us. Some reactions come back in this life, some in our future lives. Deep in our soul all of this accumulated karma, good (sukarma) and bad (kukarma), is stored. Each lifetime we experience some of it, good and bad. And each lifetime we create some more, good and bad. We call the accumulated karma sanchita karma. The karma we will experience in this lifetime is prarabdha karma. The new karma we create is kriyamana karma. Karma is not fate. Fate means something that is going to happen to you, but you did not cause it. We ourselves caused the karma that will happen to us. It is possible through spiritual practices, God s love and the grace of the satguru to get rid of bad karma before it comes back. What kind of law is karma? Do good and bad actions return to us? How soon does a karma come back? Do we experience our karma all at once? What are the three kinds of karma? Why is karma not fate? How can we get ride of bad karma? What is karma? Karma is the law of cause and effect. 37

47 11. Rebirth After our soul is created we live in the Sivaloka, the world of the Gods. Then we live in the Antarloka, the world of the angels. Finally we get a physical body in the Bhuloka, the world of men. Many, many lives do we live in this Bhuloka. Eventually we do not need to be born again in the Bhuloka. This is our goal. Living many lives is called reincarnation punarjanma in Sanskrit. We do not live just one life. When we die, we do not face a final judgement which sends us forever to heaven or hell. We live again and again. In each life we try to live according to God s law, the law of dharma. But when our soul is young, we may not live according to dharma. We do good things and bad things, which makes good and bad karma (sukarma and kukarma). According to our total karma, good and bad, we get a better or worse birth in our next life. In one life we are poor, but always share our food. In our next life we are not so poor. In one life we are a thief. In our next life all we have is stolen from us. After we die in each life, we go to the Antarloka. There the devas help us understand what we did right and what we did wrong in our last life. After many years in the Antarloka, we choose a new family and return to another birth. Where does our soul live after it is created? Do we face a final judgement? How do we get a better birth? How do we get a worse birth? Where do we go after we die? Do we choose our family? How should we live each life? We should live each live according to dharma. 41

51 12. Five Powers of God God has five great powers. They are creation, preservation, destruction, concealing grace and revealing grace. With these great powers He governs and guides the universe and every soul in it. With His power of creation God made the stars, the sun, the planets, the earth, the ocean and the land, the trees and the animals. He made the Gods, the devas and every soul. All out of Himself. With His power of preservation God maintains and protects all of His creation. He keeps order throughout the universe. With His power of destruction God brings His creation back into Himself. Everything that lives eventually dies. From that which has died new life comes. God works in an endless cycle of creation, preservation and destruction. With His power of obscuring grace God hides our true Divine nature from us. He hides it with the bond of anava. Our young soul must be protected, just as a young plant is protected by the farmer. Then it can grow and mature in the right way. With His power of revealing grace God grants us knowledge. He cuts the three bonds of anava, karma and maya. He reveals His true nature to us. He reveals our true nature to ourselves. He makes us One with Him. We are not reborn. This is the supreme goal, moksha. What are the five powers of God? What is the power of creation? What is the power of preservation? What is the power of destruction? What is the obscuring grace? What is the revealing grace? When is God s true nature revealed to us? 45

I place my palms together in front of me, elbows in, hands close to the chest, thumbs side by side or right crossed over left. This hand position is called anjali mudra. I bow and nod my head slightly and say, Namaskara. By this I mean, I know that God is in you. I show I have reverence for others. I revere them because God is within them. I do namaskara when I greet my parents. I do namaskara when I meet elders, whether I know them or not. I do namaskara when I meet a holy man or priest. I do namaskara when I greet my teachers and my schoolmates. I show that I know God is in them. I do namaskara in the direction of the temple even if I am just I walking by. I do that to honor God. I do namaskara when I attend the temple or go into my home shrine room. First I do it to each of the Gods at their shrine. Then I hold my hands in namaskara when the flame is shown during the puja. I do a big namaskara and raise my hands over my head at the high point of the puja. I see God in the temple, and I know that God is within me too. I show my love for God. Namaskara is how we Hindus greet each other. We don t shake hands or embrace when we meet. Boys and men shake hands with people only if it would be very impolite not to. Girls and women never shake hands with anyone, ever. How do we do namaskara? What is the hand position called? Who should we do namaskara to? When do we do namaskara in the temple? Should we ever shake hands with other people? Why do you do namaskara? To show that I know God is in others. 49

59 14. Lord Ganesha Lord Ganesha is a very great soul created by Supreme God Siva. He is a soul just as you are, but very, very advanced. His job is to help each of us. His job is to guard dharma. His elephant s head makes Him easy to recognize. We always worship Ganesha first. Ganesha is called the Lord of Obstacles. This means he guides our life by placing or removing obstacles. Obstacles prevent us from doing what we want. When we overcome or go around an obstacle, then we are able to reach our goal. A mountain climber reaches a big, steep cliff. It is an obstacle. He can try to climb the cliff. He can try to find a way around it. Or he can give up and turn back. He prays to Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha hears. He looks at the climber from the Sivaloka. Suddenly the climber notices a path to the right. It goes around the cliff. Ganesha showed him a way around the obstacle. But what if Lord Ganesha had seen a big storm coming? The climber suddenly thought to himself, This cliff is too big. It is dangerous. I must turn back. He never knew the storm would make him fall. This is Ganesha s grace. He works in a subtle way, an unseen way, to protect us. I want to have a new bicycle, but I don t have enough money. I pray to Lord Ganesha, Lord Ganesha, please help me get a new bicycle. I wait for a few days for His response. My cousin comes to visit from another town. He is an expert in bicycle repair. He fixes my old bicycle even better than new. That was Lord Ganesha s answer. Who created Lord Ganesha? How does Lord Ganesha help us overcome obstacles? Will He always give us what we ask for? What is Lord Ganesha s duty? His duty is to guard dharma. 53

63 15. Love of Lord Ganesha I love Lord Ganesha. I always bring a flower to His shrine in the temple. I put a flower on His statue in our shrine room. I have pictures of Him on the walls. On special days I bring Him modaka balls. He loves sweets. He enjoys my praise. I sing bhajans to Him, to make Him feel close to me. His special day of the month is Chaturthi, the fourth day after the new moon. The Chaturthi day in August/September is a big festival day for Ganesha. The tenth day after Chaturthi is Ganesha Visarjana when I put a clay statue of Lord Ganesha in the river or ocean. Ganesha has five great powers or shaktis which He controls to guard dharma. When we live in accord with dharma, these five powers come into our lives. The first power of Lord Ganesha s grace is to have harmony in our home. The second power is to have good feelings among with our relatives, neighbors and friends. The third power is to have good relations with all the business people and public officials. The fourth is to bring forth our refined Hindu culture of art, music, dance and drama. The fifth power is to give in heartfelt charity. By my worship of Lord Ganesha I bring these five great powers into my life. We celebrate these five shaktis of Lord Ganesha in the modern five-day home festival of Pancha Ganapati from December 21 to 25. It is a time of gift-giving and celebration. Each day we honor a different power of Lord Ganesha. How do I show my love for Lord Ganesha? What do I do on Ganesha Visarjana? What is Pancha Ganapati? What are the five shaktis of Lord Ganesha? Harmony with family, neighbors, business associates and public officials, culture in the home and charity. 57

67 16. Lord Muruga Lord Muruga is a powerful God. He is beautiful. He flies through the Sivaloka on his peacock. He carries a mighty lance. I worship Him for strength, intelligence and willpower. I worship Him to make me a good person. His holy lance, the vel, protects me. He rescues me when I am in trouble. He clears my mind when I am confused. I love Lord Muruga. He is always there to help me. He is much stronger than all of the asuras. The asuras run when they see Him coming. We chant Vel, Vel, Shakti Vel in the temple. This is like saying, Oh Lord Muruga, send Your powerful lance to help me. We chant loudly until the whole temple is filled with Vel, Vel, Shakti Vel. Lord Muruga has special duties. He has the power to make us advance spiritually. He awakens the intelligence of our soul. We get spiritual insight. We understand the religious teachings. We become quiet inside. We become kinder to others. We do not get angry or fight. We become more obedient to our parents, teachers and elders. It is with Lord Muruga s power that the holy man seeks God through yoga. Lord Muruga gives the yogi great willpower. Lord Muruga s power is behind our nation s government. If His power of wisdom prevails, then there is justice in the land. There is abundance of rain and crops and peace amongst the people. What do we worship Lord Muruga for? Is Lord Muruga more powerful than the asuras? What do we chant to Lord Muruga? What are His special duties? How does He help us advance spiritually? How does He help the yogi? How does His power help our nation? 61

71 17. Supreme God Siva Supreme God Siva is Love, Truth and Bliss. He creates, preserves, destroys, conceals and reveals. He is the source of all three worlds, of all forms, of time itself. He is Paramesvara, the Supreme Lord. God is the energy behind all of creation. He is the power that makes the electrons and protons into atoms, and the atoms into molecules. The entire universe is alive with Him. Everywhere is His mind, His thoughts, His love. He is Parashakti, the Supreme Energy. But God s true or ultimate nature is beyond time, form, space, energy, and the mind. The great saints and sages have discovered this true nature. They call it Parasiva, or Transcendent Siva. That means the state of Siva beyond all other states. After years of meditation and striving they found Parasiva. In that state only God exists. There is no second person. The raindrop returns to the ocean. Now there is only ocean. This is the ultimate goal. It is called Self- Realization, or God-Realization, the discovery that we are One with God. It takes great striving and lifetimes to reach this goal. There is no greater attainment than to realize the Self, to realize God. There is no greater knowledge than Self-Realization. Ultimately every soul will have this realization. What is the nature of God as Paramesvara? What is His nature as Parashakti? What is His nature as Parasiva? What is Self-Realization? How does one realize the Self? What is the ultimate nature of God? It is beyond time, form, space, energy and mind. What is the greatest attainment for a person? Self-Realization is the greatest attainment. 65

75 18. The Pillar of Fire Once upon a time the Gods wondered, Who among us is the most powerful. Suddenly a stranger appeared near them. Who is that? they all wondered. I will find out, said the God of Wind. As he approached the newcomer, the newcomer suddenly asked, Who are you? I am the God of Wind. I am very widely known. I can blow anything away, said the God of Wind. Blow this away, said the newcomer, placing a straw before him. The God of Wind fell upon the straw with all his might, but it did not move. Ashamed, he hurried back to the others. Next came the God of Fire. Who are you? asked the newcomer. I am the God of Fire. In fact, I am very widely known. I can burn anything. Burn this, said the newcomer, placing a straw before him. The God of Fire fell upon the straw with all his fury, but nothing happened. He too hurried back. Now Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma were watching all this. They humbly approached the newcomer and said, Who, sir, are you? The newcomer vanished and a great pillar of fire appeared. It extended deep into the earth and high into the sky. Vishnu and Brahma wanted to find the ends of this pillar. Vishnu went down into the earth, and Brahma into the sky. For many years they searched. But they could find neither the top nor the bottom. Finally they came back to where they started. Suddenly Lord Siva burst forth from the pillar of fire. Now the Gods knew it was the Supreme God that had come. He is really the power behind all the other Gods. Without Him, the God of Wind and the God of Fire have no power to blow or burn. And He is beyond the ability of even Vishnu and Brahma to find His beginning or end. Without God Siva, did the other Gods have any power? No, Their power came only from Supreme God Siva 69

79 19. Vahanas Each of the Gods has a vahana, a mount that they ride upon. Lord Siva rides upon Nandi, a large white bull with a black tail. Lord Muruga rides upon Mayura, a peacock. And Lord Ganesha rides upon Mushika, a mouse. You will always see the vahana outside the shrines in the temple. It is one way to know which God the shrine is for. The vahanas help us understand Supreme God Siva, Lords Muruga and Ganesha. The bull is a very powerful animal. He is hard to tame. But Siva has tamed Nandi. In the same way Siva tames us. Our ego sometimes makes us not want to follow God s law. But Siva s love tames our ego, just as Siva s love tamed Nandi. Nandi always kneels in front of Siva. He never takes his eyes off of Siva. In the same way, we will not forget Siva. Like Nandi, we will be a perfect devotee of Supreme God Siva. The peacock is very beautiful, just as our religion is beautiful. Lord Muruga is a beautiful God. Muruga makes our religious life beautiful. The peacock is also powerful. It can kill a cobra, a very dangerous snake. This shows Muruga has power over danger. He can protect us. Lord Ganesha rides upon Mushika, a mouse. The mouse is small and able to get into anything. Mushika can carry Lord Ganesha s love and grace into everyone s life. Lord Ganesha has the power to control even the smallest things in our lives. What is a vahana? How do we know which God a shrine is for? Who is Lord Siva s vahana? What does Lord Siva s vahana teach us about Lord Siva? Who is Lord Muruga s vahana? What does he teach us about Lord Muruga? Who is Lord Ganesha s vahana? 83 20. Powers Lord Siva s Trisula, Lord Muruga s Vel and Lord Ganesha s Noose and Goad are symbols of their energy or power. Like the vahanas, these symbols teach us about each God. The Trisula is a three-pronged spear or trident. It symbolizes Supreme God Siva s three forms of energy: love, action and wisdom. In Sanskrit these energies are called iccha, kriya and jnana shaktis. With these three energies He creates, preserves and destroys the universe. He creates our souls. He lovingly and wisely guides them back to Himself. Lord Muruga s Vel is a lance or spear. It symbolizes His power of spiritual insight. Spiritual insight means the power to see and understand what is true and right. By worshipping Lord Muruga we get this insight. That is the Vel s power. We say Lord Muruga throws His Vel and breaks up the ignorance of our mind. The Vel then returns to Lord Muruga s hand. In some famous temples, only the Vel of Lord Muruga is worshipped. Lord Ganesha s noose symbolizes His power to stop things from happening. His goad symbolizes His power to make things happen. We seek Lord Ganesha s blessings before we begin something new. If that thing is not good for us, then His noose will hold us back. And if it is good, then He uses His goad to make us move forward. We have to wait a few days after we make our prayer. Then there will be a sign from Lord Ganesha to go ahead or not. What is symbolized by the Trisula? What are the three shaktis? What does Siva do with the three shaktis? What is the Vel? What does it do? How does Lord Ganesha use His noose? How does He use His goad? How does He let us know what to do? How long should we wait? 77

87 21. Nama Sivaya A mantra is a sacred sound, syllable, word or phrase which has special power. A mantra is in the Sanskrit language and comes from a scripture, such as the Vedas. Most of the mantras are ancient and have been chanted for thousands of years. There is power to their very sound. Japa is repeating mantras quietly to oneself. The sound makes our mind peaceful and quiet. It brings peace to the room or building in which we chant. Other people can feel that peace. During puja the priests chant the mantras very loudly. The sound reaches from our world to heaven. The Gods and devas hear the mantras and know that puja is happening. The most important mantra for Saivites is Nama Sivaya. It means Adoration to Siva. It is like saying I love and adore you, Supreme God Siva. We call it the Panchakshara or five letters. Nama Sivaya is from the Yajur Veda. Our philosophy is summarized in just these five letters. Na is the concealing grace, Ma is the world, Si stands for Siva, Va is His revealing grace, Ya is the soul. We can chant Nama Sivaya any time. But to be really powerful, we must hear the mantra from a spiritual teacher. This happens in a special ceremony called mantra diksha, or mantra initiation. The mantra is sacred, it is not just a word. For thousands of years the mantra has been given from teacher to student. That power is given by initiation. What is a mantra? What do mantras do? What is japa? Why do the priests chant the mantras loudly? What is the Saivite mantra? What is it called? What do the five syllables mean? What is mantra diksha. Why is it important? What does Nama Sivaya mean? Adoration to Siva. 81

91 22. The Holy Satguru A guru is a teacher of any subject, such as music or dance. A satguru is the most important guru. He is a saint who has realized God. He is now working to help others realize God. Only when we really want to advance spiritually will we find a guru. For example, you might like to paint. In fact, you are rather good at painting. But you want to become a professional painter. You could try on your own, but it would take years and years. Better to find someone to teach you. In the same way, when we really want to know God, we must find a teacher. That is the satguru. We always respect the satguru. But learning about God isn t like learning how to paint. The guru doesn t just teach you about religion like it was a school subject. He works to break your three bonds of anava, karma and maya. It is hard work for him, and hard work for you too. The guru is going to make you change change how you think, how you live, how you treat other people. There are rules about gurus. They are called guru protocol. Always bring a gift when you meet a guru, at least fruit or a flower. It is traditional to touch his feet or prostrate fully. Always sit lower than the guru. If you decide to ask a guru s advice on a particular matter, then you must follow the advice he gives. Never lie to a guru, don t argue with him, never criticize him. God works directly through the guru. Always remember this. Rare and holy is the true sat guru. What is a satguru? Why do you need a satguru? What does he do? Is it easy to have a guru? What is guru protocol? What is the rule about asking advice? What don t we do around a guru? Who works through the guru? Supreme God Siva works directly through the guru. 85

95 23. The Weaver Saint Tiruvalluvar ( Holy Weaver ) lived with his wife in South India about 2,200 years ago. He is believed to have been a private secretary to the king. Tiruvalluvar is famous today for his book Tirukural. It is a collection of 1,330 four-line stanzas on a wide range of subjects. He writes about God, saints, family life, nonviolence, business and how to run a kingdom. The second verse says, What has learning profited a man, if it has not led him to worship the Good Feet of Him who is pure knowledge itself? This like saying, Why study so many things if as a result we do not worship God? God is really the source of all knowledge. Learning is of no use if we do not use it to become closer to God. There is no better book in the world on ethics. Ethics are the rules of how to behave, that is, what is right and wrong to do. In South India, the Tirukural is sworn upon in the courts of law. We know a few things about Tiruvalluvar s life. A marriage was proposed for him with Vasuki, a virtuous maiden. Tiruvalluvar decided to test her. He gave her a bucket of sand and said, Cook this rice for me. Vasuki did not question, but took the sand and cooked it as rice. By the power of her virtue, the sand indeed turned into rice. So she became his wife. Tiruvalluvar called Vasuki, who was drawing water from the well. Vasuki came immediately. The bucket remained hanging midway in the air! Because of her virtue, even nature came under her power. A virtuous wife only thinks about her husband. She is cooperative, obedient and helpful in every way. Because of Vasuki s virtue, her husband was able to write a great masterpiece. What is the Tirukural? What subjects does it cover? What are ethics? How is the book used in the courts? Why was Vasuki a good wife? Why was her husband able to write the Tirukural? 89

99 24. The Holy Kural Here are excerpts from the Tirukural to memorize: To utter harsh words when sweet ones would serve is like eating unripe fruits when ripe ones are at hand. (Verse 100) Embark upon an action after careful thought. It is folly to say, Let us begin the task now and think about it later. (467) Those businessmen will prosper whose business protects as their own the interests of others. (120) When a man realizes that meat is the butchered flesh of another creature, he must abstain from eating it. (257) Trouble itself they send away troubled who do not trouble themselves at the sight of it. (623) At all times and to all creatures the seed of ceaseless births is desire. (361) A worthy wife is the blessing of a home, and good children are its precious ornament. (60) Of all a man s blessings we know of none greater than the begetting of children endowed with intelligence. (60) What pleasure it is to human beings everywhere when their children possess knowledge surpassing their own! (68) When a mother hears her son heralded a good and learned man, her joy exceeds that of his joyous birth. (69) The son s duty to his father is to make the world ask, By what great austerities did he merit such a son? (70) 93

102 ,,,, The hands are held in anjali mudra when we namaskara. It is a gesture of reverence. O God, may we please you with songs sung in our homes. May we please you with our offerings. Reward us with your gifts! Reward us with happiness! This is our prayer. RIG VEDA

103 25. Singing to God Bhajana are simple songs in praise of God and the Gods. Often they are in Sanskrit. One is Ganesha Saranam, Saranam Ganesha. This is like saying, I take refuge in you, Lord Ganesha. Please watch over me. Another is, Vel Vel Muruga, Shakti Vel Muruga. This is like saying, Oh Lord Muruga, may your powerful Vel protect and bless me. Another is, Siva, Siva, Siva, Siva Sivayanama Aum. This is like saying, Oh Lord Siva I praise You and Your most sacred mantra, Sivayanama. Please come and bless me. In the normal form we sing a line, then everyone present repeats the same line. But sometimes there are entire songs that everyone knows and sings together. We sing bhajana to show our love of God. We sing bhajana to feel God s love for us. It does not matter if we sing well or not. It does not matter if there are any musical instruments. It does not matter if we know just one song or many songs. It does not matter if we have many people singing or just one. What does matter is that we feel love and devotion when we sing. When we sing with devotion God can hear us. He sends His love and blessings to us. Bhajana is part of every puja. In the temple we can sing when the priest closes the curtain after the abhishekam. He will be busy dressing the Deity then, and we can sing. No one needs an invitation to sing, we can just start. One person after another, young or old, can lead the singing. During the chariot festival we follow the chariot and sing. At home we can sing as part of our worship in our shrine room, or as part of any family gathering. Sometimes there are special evenings when we gather at the temple or a friend s home for bhajana in a big group. Everyone joins in to sing their love for God. At school our class can sing bhajana together. Special groups are often formed to lead the bhajana. 97

106 ,,, Orange,,, or red flags are flown at festivals. They symbolize the victory of our ancient faith. He who has seen God is glorious. He is purified, empty, peaceful, selfless and infinite. He is indestructible, stable, eternal and free. KRISHNA YAJUR VEDA,MAITREYA UPANISHAD

107 26. King Janaka and the Boys Once a priest had two sons. He taught them well. They memorized many sacred texts. But they were very proud of their learning. One day they asked their father, We want to become great teachers. Send us to someone who can really teach us about God. The father replied, You must go see my friend, King Janaka. You can learn a lot from him. The boys set off to the palace. The guards let them enter. The boys were shocked. The palace was so rich! The walls and floors were marble, decorated with gold and jewels. A big feast was going on so much food the boys never saw before! There were singers, acrobats, musicians and dancing girls. The king was sitting in the midst of all this. The boys thought, How are we going to learn anything from this king. He is just likes to eat and watch the dances! With an arrogant air they introduced themselves to King Janaka. King Janaka was truly a spiritually advanced person. He knew their thoughts and why their father had sent them. He said, Boys, take these two jars full of oil, put them on your heads, and walk around the palace one time. Why? thought the boys. King Janaka said, And if you spill one drop from those jars, I ll have your heads cut off! Needless to say, the boys walked very carefully around that palace, never taken their mind off the jars. They went past food and drink, dancers and singers, gold and jewels and did not even notice them. They returned to the king, greatly relieved at not spilling the oil. King Janaka said, Now, that is how I live in this palace. I am entrusted with a vast kingdom. I must be alert to following dharma every minute of the day. I do not see the pleasures or wealth of this place. Only I think of God and my duty. When you have that kind of concentration without the threat to your head then you will advance spiritually. Go back to your father and tell him you have had a good lesson. 101
