Prose, cartoons, and web pages can be used but your definitions must be in your own words. If you wish you can design your own art work. Your dictionary must be presented in a booklet format with an index in the back. 4 Rituals: How to Have a Home Puja After watching the video clip How to have a home puja, reflect and explain your viewpoint on the following questions. 1. Identify 2 religious practices in this form of worship that you recognize and 2 religious practices that you find odd. 2. How does engaging all of our senses make worship a more meaningful experience? 3. What is the significance and purpose of the images of the deities used during puja? 4. Recall your own experiences of worship either at home or in a church. How are your senses engaged during this worship? How is this worship similar to/different from Catholic worship? Comparing Worldviews: Hinduism and Catholicism You have been assigned one belief from Hinduism s worldview to research and compare with a Catholic worldview. Complete the following steps in your expert group in preparation for teaching your home group. 1. Circle the belief comparison that your group has been assigned: i. samsara and moksha with a Catholic understanding of what happens after death. ii. karma with the Catholic understanding of salvation. iii. dharma with the Catholic understanding of moral responsibility (the golden rule for Hinduism and Christianity). iv. Brahman with the Catholic understanding of God. v. atman with the Catholic understanding of the soul. vi. maya with the Catholic understanding of reality. 2. Use your Student Book, internet or library resources to explore this belief in detail and to compare it with what Catholics believe. 3. Create a handout to help you teach your home group what you learned. Your handout should contain the following: i. an explanation of the belief in your own words with an example, a simile, or a metaphor to clarify it. ii. a graphic organizer (e.g., Venn diagram, t-chart) that displays the similarities and differences between Catholic and Hindu worldviews.

What would happen to the belief in dharma and reincarnation if the caste system were abolished? Explain.

Apply what you know about the caste system to your response. Compare the social mobility of your ancestors with that of a Hindu family living according to the rules of the caste system. What differences or similarities might you find? (Think about ideas of class, ethnicity, and religion.)

What does that tell us about the understanding Hindus have about the beginning of human life and one s identity as a human being? How does this view of life and conception compare to the Catholic teaching of respect for life? Explain. ii. When you examined the sacred thread ceremony, what thoughts went through your mind? What does this ceremony say about how Hindus approach education? Is there a similar ceremony for Christian children? iii. What elements of a Hindu funeral in India demonstrate a deep respect for the dignity of the person? How does this compare to a Catholic funeral? Explain. iv. Imagine that you had reached the age of retirement and had several grandchildren. You decided to live in seclusion and devote yourself to religious study and meditation. Describe what you feel would be the hardest things to leave behind. What experience in a Catholic s life, if any, might be similar to this stage?
