12 The Commission on a Way Forward What You Need to Know! The Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church has called a Special Session of the General Conference to be held February 23 26, 2019, in St. Louis, Missouri. The purpose will be to receive and act on a report from the Commission on a Way Forward based on the recommendations of the Council of Bishops. The 32 member Commission was authorized by General Conference 2016 and appointed by the Council of Bishops to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to strengthen the unity of the church. The Baltimore Washington Conference has prepared the following summary to assist pastors and their congregations in understanding the recommendations. The Commission s Report and other resources may be found at: on a way forward The Commission s report includes: History of the Commission s work Key Foundational Ideas (Common Core, Need for Space, Global Church, Public vs. Private Mission, etc.) Missional and Theological Framework The Three Plans One Church Connectional Conference Traditional The Appendices include information about the possibility of churches who desire to change their relationship with the UMC, the Council of Bishop s recommendation, and Wespath implications. 14 Asbury United Methodist Church November 2018 Newsletter Vaccination Awareness Month Vaccination is the injection of an antigenic substance (killed microorganism: bacteria virus fungi,) in order to stimulate the immune system against this substance in order to prevent a disease caused by this microbe (microorganism). The effectiveness of these immunizations (vaccinations) can be improved by periodic repeat injections or boosters. These vaccinations are often recognized for the role they play in producing healthy children, but, they are less frequently recognized for the role they play in producing healthy adults? The following is a table of vaccine -preventable diseases: Disease Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis Hepatitis A Hepatitis Hepatitis A Hepatitis B Human Human (HPV) influenza Measles Measles, mumps, and rubella (two vaccines separate Mumps Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) Pneumococcal (multiple vaccines different 14

15 Facts about vaccines: Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect adults against many common infectious diseases. 80,000 people died from the flu last year most were not vaccinated. 900,000 Americans get pneumococcal pneumonia each year and 5-7% die from it. They do not cause autism or active infections. Nearly two million people in the United States of America are chronically infected with Hepatitis B. Almost all cases of Tetanus occur in people who have never been immunized or have not had a booster within 10 years. What is the vaccination schedule for adults? Vaccine Influenza (flu) Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) or tetanus, diphtheria (Td) Varicella (chickenpox) Recommended age of vaccination Yearly Tdap once as an adult Td every 10 years Two doses (unless had documented disease or Immunized as a child or adolescent) Human papillomavirus (HPV) (three doses) Three doses before 47 years of age, (unless already immunized as an adolescent) Zoster (shingles) it is a live Virus Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) Pneumococcal disease Hepatitis A Hepatitis B Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) One dose after 60 years of age One or two doses (unless immunized Previously, known to have been previously Infected or born prior to 1957) All people over 65 years of age People in special high-risk groups and who have certain chronic illnesses should receive both of the two different pneumococcal vaccines as soon as possible Two doses in certain patients who are high Risk (unless immunized previously) Three doses in certain patients who are high Risk (unless immunized previously) One of three doses in certain patients who are high risk (unless immunized previously) 15

16 The Vaccines which are most important for adults to receive are: -- The flu vaccine (egg allergy or not). The pneumococcal vaccine, the herpes, zoster vaccine, the hepatitis A&B vaccines, and the HPV vaccine (10-47). The newest vaccine is the human papilloma virus which can cause cervical, anal, oropharyngeal, vaginal and penile cancer, years after the original viral infection. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection in America. Pneumococcal disease stands as the number one cause of illness in the United States that can be presented by a vaccine. It has been associated with the reduction of the cases of middle ear or lung infections by 99%. The influenza vaccine should be taken as soon as possible. Certainly by the end of October or no later than the first week in November. HELP!!!! 17 Rep. Helen Gahagan Douglas From the Asbury Archives By James Wright Jr. Asbury Historian U.S. Rep. Helen Gahagan Douglas spoke at Asbury on May 11, 1945, according to an April 1945 edition of The Asburyan, the church's newsletter. Douglas, a former actress, was a legislator from California and was a strong progressive on civil and human rights. She served in the U.S. House of Representatives from and was the third woman and first female Democrat to represent the Golden State in Congress. Douglas ran for the U.S. Senate in 1950 and secured the Democratic nomination. However, Douglas was defeated in the race by Republican Rep. Richard M. Nixon, who ran a campaign subtly suggesting that Douglas was sensitive to communism, saying vulgarly that "she is pink down to her undergarments." Nixon went on to become U.S. vice president from , the Republican nominee for president in 1960 and served as U.S. president from , when he resigned under the cloud of the Watergate scandal. Political historians have said the Douglas Nixon campaign was one of the nastiest during that time period and foreshadowed the ugliness in politics that we have today. On May 11, Douglas spoke to a meeting of the Metropolitan Council of the National Congress of Negro Women at Asbury that was led nationally at the time by church member Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. The event was designed to observe "World Security Month" and Douglas was the principal speaker. 17
