12 Women s History Month 2019 Celebrating Women of Asbury 45 and Under March is Women s History Month. This year, the United Methodist Women and Archives and History are proud to join in recognizing and celebrating young women of Asbury who are helping to make our Church, the world, our nation, and our communities better. The theme for this year s national observance of Women s History Month is Visionary Women: Champions of Peace & Nonviolence. Across the nation, women who have led efforts to end war, violence, and injustice and pioneered the use of nonviolence to change society are being honored this month. This year at Asbury, we are proud to recognize Women Under 45 in our congregation. These young women are accomplished, compassionate, committed, and we are grateful that they are helping to secure Asbury s future. This week we are proud to recognize Sarita Singh and Elle Waters. Sarita Singh is Asbury s new Youth Ministry Coordinator. A third generation Asburyan, Sarita is the daughter of Cheryl Doby- Copeland and the granddaughter of Jamesetta Doby. Sarita was christened, confirmed, and married at Asbury. Growing up at Asbury, Sarita was active in youth activities and loved playing the bells. Sarita graduated magna cum laude from the evening program of The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, while working full time as a Veterinary Technician for the Department of Defense. She obtained her juris doctorate in May 2013, and earned a Certificate from the Comparative and International Law Institute. Sarita is licensed to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court, the State of Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Sarita received her bachelor s degree in Animal Sciences, with Spanish as a minor, from the University of Maryland, College Park, in December Presently, Sarita is a Senior International Trade Attorney with U.S. Customs and Border Protection s Office of Trade. In this position Sarita writes binding decisions regarding international trade law, protecting our nation from fraudulent and illegal imports and other trade activities. Sarita previously clerked for the Chief Judge of the U.S. Department of Labor s Office of Administrative Law Judges. Additionally, Sarita currently serves as a volunteer Guardian ad litem, representing minor children involved in contentious custody disputes, before the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Sarita is devoted to serving her community and the nation, through her public service. 14 Prayers for Lent Youth Prayer for Lent Lord, Teach me a new freedom. Freedom to reject comparison And to embrace uniqueness. Freedom to cut ties with greed And feast on love. Freedom to abstain from over indulgence And feast on self control. Freedom to leave behind selfish thoughts And to focus on the needs of others. Freedom to fend off insecurity And to embrace grace. Lord, at this time of Lent, Thank you for the freedom you bring. Amen. (from prayer words.com) A Children's Prayer for Lent Lord, please show me what I should give up for Lent And when I've given it up Remind me to pray to You instead To thank You To love You To hear from You Each and every day in Lent Amen (a modern children's prayer for seeking God from prayer words.com) 14
15 An Adult s Prayer for Lent Lord, let everything I do this day and in this season of Lent come from you, be inspired by you. I long to be closer to you. Help me to remember that nothing is important in my life unless it glorifies you in some way. It's so easy to get caught up in the day to day of my life and keep saying, "Tomorrow, I will spend more time in prayer," but now my longing meets your love and I want to do it now. Help me to rely on you for help. The prayer asks you that I reach perfection. Please, Lord, remind me that "perfection" isn't the crazy, "successful" way I try to live my life, but a perfection of my most authentic, real self. My "perfection" might be holding my many flaws in my open hands, asking you to help me accept them. Heal me, Lord, and help me to find you in the darkness of my life. Let me reach out in this darkness and feel your hand and love there to guide me. (onlineministries.creighton.edu) Happy Birthday, Mom (Marion Whitlock Jones). May you rejoice in heaven as we rejoice here on earth. Love, Cliftine (March 29, 2019) THANK YOU Asbury UMC, Thank you for your prayers and thoughts during our me of sorrow. We appreciate the lovely floral arrangement and cards. ~The Jackson & Mills Family 15
