5 REV. DR. RODNEY THOMAS SMOTHERS Dr. Smothers serves as the Congregational Development Resource Specialist for The Baltimore Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church. Prior to his current appointment he served congregations in both the North Georgia and The Baltimore Washington Conferences. He is the founding pastor of two new church starts, and two cross cultural congregations. He has served as the Director of Evangelism and Revitalization Ministries at the General Board of Discipleship in Nashville, Tennessee, and as the Director of Congregational Development for the Baltimore Washington Conference. Dr. Smothers served as an Adjunct Faculty member at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia; where he taught in the areas of Church Administration and Worship. He has also served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Howard University School of Divinity where he taught Church Administration, Evangelism and United Methodist History. For thirty seven years he has provided seminars, training and workshops in the areas of effective leadership. He serves as the Director of RTS Coaching Associates, a ministry that provides coaching and consultation services for individuals and organizations. Dr. Smothers' passion is resourcing learners and leaders through strategic coaching initiatives. Dr. Smothers earned his Master of Divinity Degree in 1982 from Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia, his Doctor of Ministry Degree in 1993 from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a 2001 graduate of Asbury Seminary s Beeson Institute for Advance Church Leadership located in Wilmore, Kentucky. In 2013 he completed The Howard University School of Business Executive Leadership for Ministers Program. He is also a graduate of Leadership Atlanta, Georgia and Leadership Prince Georges' County, Maryland. He is married to Dr. Lynn Thomas Smothers, and is the father of three young adults. 5

8 ANGEL TREE is back! This ministry, coordinated by Asbury UMW, allows our congregation to share the love of Christ during the Christmas season and through-out the year with children whose parent(s) are incarcerated. Asburyans and friends who have participated in this program found it to be a very rewarding experience. ANGEL TREE SUNDAY is TODAY. This is the day that you may select your Angel(s) and purchase gifts from their wish list. Look for the Christmas tree with Angels in the Library. Each child will receive a minimum of two gifts, a toy or fun item and an article of clothing. Each gift should be approximately $20 in value. Volunteers are available to shop on your behalf., we will be happy to help. RETURN GIFTS TO G-1 on December 3. Place unwrapped gifts in a gift bag if possible. It is very important that each gift is labeled with the child s first name and his/her code number. Drop-off gifts in G-1 after both services. ANGEL TREE CHRISTMAS PARTY is December 16 at 12:30 pm. The children and caregivers are invited to meet the volunteers, celebrate the meaning of Christmas, have lunch, play games and receive their gifts. Our guest preacher will be Rev. Alexis Brown, United Methodist Campus Minister at Howard University. Students from Howard University will join her in planning and leading the worship service. Immediately following the 10:30 am service please remain in the sanctuary for a presentation of their recent mission trip to Honduras. We are seeking the support of our HU Alumni and others interested in reestablishing our connection with the HU Campus Ministry to offer the light reception. But we don t always know what to say or do. This Ministry will be responsible for preparing Journeying through Grief books for mailing, and by providing on-going care, love, support to members during the first year after a loss.
