5 REV. DR. RODNEY THOMAS SMOTHERS Dr. Smothers serves as the Congregational Development Resource Specialist for The Baltimore Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church. Prior to his current appointment he served congregations in both the North Georgia and The Baltimore Washington Conferences. He is the founding pastor of two new church starts, and two cross cultural congregations. He has served as the Director of Evangelism and Revitalization Ministries at the General Board of Discipleship in Nashville, Tennessee, and as the Director of Congregational Development for the Baltimore Washington Conference. Dr. Smothers served as an Adjunct Faculty member at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia; where he taught in the areas of Church Administration and Worship. He has also served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Howard University School of Divinity where he taught Church Administration, Evangelism and United Methodist History. For thirty seven years he has provided seminars, training and workshops in the areas of effective leadership. He serves as the Director of RTS Coaching Associates, a ministry that provides coaching and consultation services for individuals and organizations. Dr. Smothers' passion is resourcing learners and leaders through strategic coaching initiatives. Dr. Smothers earned his Master of Divinity Degree in 1982 from Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia, his Doctor of Ministry Degree in 1993 from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a 2001 graduate of Asbury Seminary s Beeson Institute for Advance Church Leadership located in Wilmore, Kentucky. In 2013 he completed The Howard University School of Business Executive Leadership for Ministers Program. He is also a graduate of Leadership Atlanta, Georgia and Leadership Prince Georges' County, Maryland. He is married to Dr. Lynn Thomas Smothers, and is the father of three young adults. 5

8 ASBURYANS UNITE TO FUND THE FURNACE!!! Fellow Asburyans, We need your support to replace the boilers at Asbury, and we need it right away! Boilers are used to heat the sanctuary and the Old Social Hall of our 100+ year old church building. Asbury has two boilers. These boilers have cracked and are no longer operable. At the end of the winter season this year, in a routine, mandatory inspection of the boilers at Asbury, a District of Columbia government inspector red-tagged the boilers for being out of compliance. When the Board of Trustees sought to correct the compliance issue, it was determined that the cost of repairing the two boilers was almost as much as it would cost to buy a new boiler, and no service provider was willing to guarantee how many more years of service the boilers would provide after repair. Additional inspection also revealed that several of the eight radiators in the church were in need of service or replacement. After extensive consultation with boiler service providers, the Trustees determined the following: replacement is more cost effective than repair; two boilers should be replaced with one for increased efficiency; radiators need an upgrade; the piping and electric system connected to the boiler should be modernized; and, the boiler pad should be leveled. After a user sets up their account the 1st time, subsequent donations can be made by just texting the dollar amount to All of this work must take place before the start of the cooler weather. To ensure the work is finished before it starts to get cold, a new boiler must be installed by September 30, The cost to do all of this work ranges from $60,000 to $90,000, depending on how extensive the work to modernize the piping system and labor charges. The Trustees will enter into a contract with a vendor in August so that work may begin in September. We do not want to take out a loan for this work, and funds remaining in our capital account are insufficient to cover the cost of this project. Replacing the boiler to heat the church is something that we must do, and we must do it now. Delay is not an option. We need to finance the boiler replacement on a pay-as-yougo basis, which is why we will need all Asburyans to step-up between now and Homecoming in September to pay for this critical work. 10 BOOK BAG AND SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE Thank you to the members who donated book bags and school supplies on Sunday, July 30. It's a start to meeting our goal to donate school supplies and book bags to 50 students in the Shelter System and at Thomson. Unfortunately, we are far from our target number and we really, really need your help. Please prayerfully consider donating book bags and supplies to help children in need. Your support will help increase readiness and excitement to learn. Today, Sunday, August 6 is our deadline. The book bags and supplies will be delivered to the District Department of Human Services One Congregation One Family and Thomson Elementary School the following week. 17 THE NEHEMIAH FUND Thank you for your contributions to The Nehemiah Fund of Asbury United Methodist Church. The Nehemiah Fund provides emergency financial assistance to members of Asbury United Methodist Church and their immediate families who temporarily need help in meeting housing, nutritional, medical, security, or other essentials of daily living. In rare cases, the Fund may be accessed for burial assistance for members of Asbury United Methodist Church. The Fund may also be used to support needs of members of the community at large. The Fund is maintained by general and undesignated offerings made during the Communion offering on the first Sunday of each month or other period when an offering is taken associated with a Communion service at Asbury United Methodist Church. Requests for assistance are held in confidence and administered by our Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Ianther Mills. 18 Health Ministry News August 2017 HEPATITIS Hepatitis is swelling and inflammation of the liver and is caused by: 1. Immunologic disease (Immune cells) attacking the liver. 2. Infections from viruses Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E, bacteria or parasites. 3. Liver damage from alcohol or other poisons (scarring of the liver is called cirrhosis). 4. Medicines such as overdose of acetaminophen (Tylenol). 5. Fatty liver disease [hepatic steatosis] one of the commonest causes is alcoholism but it is also caused by pregnancy or is found in people who are overweight or obese or have high cholesterol levels and diabetes. The symptoms are: 1. Pain and bloating in the belly area 2. Dark urine and white or pale colored stools 3. Fatigue 4. Low grade fever 5. Itching 6. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) 7. Loss of appetite 8. Nausea and vomiting 9. Weight loss 10. Bloody bowel movements 11. Confusion or delirium Physical examination is characterized by enlarged and tender liver; Ascites- which is fluid in the abdomen (swollen belly); and Yellow skin or eyes. The Diagnosis is confirmed by Ultra Sound; blood tests for hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D, E; liver function tests; and liver biopsy. The treatment is low protein, high calorie diet if untreated liver complications can be: Liver cirrhosis, permanent live damage (scarring) liver failure, and liver cancer, which may require liver surgery or a liver transplant It may be associated with previous travel to Asia, Africa, South America, or Central America. Prevention: 1. Avoid sharing personal items such as razors, toothbrush, do not share drug needles or other drug equipment, tattoos or body piercing. 2. Get vaccine to prevent hepatitis A&B. 3. Wash your hands well after all restroom use. 4. Avoid contact with blood, feces, or body fluids. 5. Avoid unclean food or water. Thirty percent of Americans have asymptomatic hepatitis that is undiagnosed. There is a great need therefore for all to get blood tests to identify the presence of the hepatitis virus in the blood which is contagious. World Hepatitis Day is July 28, every year. Worldwide, 400 million people have chronic hepatitis and $1.4 million people die every year from Hepatitis. The goal is to detect, prevent and control viral hepatitis. Everyone who has not been tested for hepatitis should be! Hepatitis A&B can be prevented by a vaccine. Hepatitis C if present can be successfully treated in 95% cases. If you have a fatty liver it can be reversed by: 1. Eliminating all fructose corn sugar from your diet. 2. Reduce or eliminate starches. 3. Exercise 30 minutes/day 5 times a week. 4. Control diabetes. 5. Lose weight. 6. Avoid alcohol. 7. Take vaccine for Hepatitis A&B. Finally if you have not had a blood test for Hepatitis, please get a blood test this week. 18
