8 Fourth Sunday in Advent Reader: "In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David" (Luke 2:1,3 4). Reader: Today we remember Joseph, worn out traveler and worried husband, doing what was necessary for the sake of his family, the burden of poverty stifling his hope in the promise of God. There was no room for him, yet he knows to whom he belongs. People: Today we give thanks for the Josephs among us, migrating far from home when there is no choice, fiercely devoted to the ones they love, unwavering in their belief that there is room for all in the kin dom of God. Reader: On this fourth Sunday of Advent, we light this candle as a symbol of Joseph, who knocks at the door, ready to take his place among royalty. (Light two purple candles, the rose candle, and the last purple candle.) Hymn: "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" Stanza 4, UMH, 211 8

13 Count Your Blessings! December 23, 2018 Dear Asbury Church Family, God has truly blessed us this year! These are just a few blessings we are counting: Completed the upgrade and installation of the sanctuary Sound System. Continued offering three worship services including The Bridge on Sunday evenings to reach new people in our community in need of a church home Continued our superior music ministry that spans the breadth of musical styles including traditional and contemporary music; from hymns, spirituals, and gospel to anthems Reached community youth through Project Transformation and Vacation Bible School Monthly served 300 unhoused neighbors through the Neighbor-to-Neighbor breakfast, health education, toiletries and clothing; supported 12 families monthly with supplemental groceries; provided 100 bagged lunches weekly to needy persons; and provided 60 Thanksgiving baskets. Paid 100% apportionments and connectional responsibility to support Conference and world missions. Even though we have accomplished much together this past year, there is still much to be done as we continue pressing on in our call to love God and one another, serve our community, and transform lives. We invite you to help us finish the year strong and prepare ourselves for an exciting 2019 by prayerfully considering an end-of-year financial gift to Asbury. As you review your giving and the many ways God has blessed you in 2018, have you honored God by giving at least the first tenth to your local church? Will you prayerfully consider catching up your pledge, going the second mile, or giving a gift from your heart? You can make a donation by giving in our Sunday offerings, mailing a check to the church office, or making a contribution online via the church website, (Please note: In order for these gifts to be tax deductible they must be postmarked and/or given on or before December 31, 2018.) Thank you for being a part of the Asbury church family and helping us accomplish the vision God has given us. Together in Christ s service! Rev. Dr. Ianther M. Mills Rev. Dr. Ianther M. 14 A Prayer for Peace During The Holiday Season Lord, in a season when every heart should be happy and light, many of us are struggling with the heaviness of life burdens that steal the joy right out of our Christmas stockings. Crazy weather disasters strike at unsuspecting areas, ravaging peaceful homes and interrupting the lives of unsuspecting residents. Tragedy arrives as innocent victims suffer, and an inner voice whispers, Be afraid! We need your peace, Jesus. Lord, we still carol the wonderful message, huddled beneath winter caps on snow-covered porches, or from churches, led by enthusiastic musicians or choir members. Yet we confess that our hearts are too often filled with wonder of a different kind: wondering when the bills will be paid, when the terror will stop, when rest will come. Will it ever? Is the message still true? In a world where worry, not peace, prevails, stir up that good news again. This Christmas, make it real in our hearts. Never have we needed your joy and peace more than now. Thank you for the gift of Jesus, our Immanuel, the Word made flesh. Forgive us for forgetting that your love never changes, never fades, and that you never abandon the purpose for which you came: to save us from our sinful condition, and to give us life eternal, the joy of relationship with a holy God. Your birth and your death sealed your promise to us forever. For those whose hearts are battered by sorrow or broken relationships, for those whose lives know only conflict and confusion, for those whose bodies are tired and tested beyond their ability to endure this year precious Savior, draw them close to you. Let them know you are still the same Jesus who was born of a virgin, not in a hospital but an animal barn, laid in a manger of hay. You are still the One sent by a heavenly Father who offered not condemnation for our sins, but love and forgiveness and daily, divine fellowship. You are still our Joy. You are still our Peace. You are no longer a babe in the manger. You are Lord of lords and King of kings. And we still celebrate you as Lord this Christmas and always. Amen. ~ Rebecca Barlow Jordan 14
15 Thank you to those who responded by submitting your pledge cards on Consecration Sunday, November 11, Your commitment will give us needed financial information that will help us as we plan our ministry activities for the upcoming year. If you have not submitted your card, it will still be accepted. After completing your pledge card, you can place it in the offering basket on Sunday, bring it to the office, or mail it to the church to the attention of the Finance Office. Extra cards can be found outside the Main Office and in the Narthex. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21) The Stewardship Committee Stewardship Corner Warning Warning: The Advent Virus Be on the alert for symptoms of inner Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to this virus and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world. Some signs and symptoms of The Advent Virus: A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than act on fears based on past experiences. An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment. A loss of interest in judging other people. A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others. A loss of interest in conflict. A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a serious one.) Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation. Frequent attacks of smiling. An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen. An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others, as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it. Please send this warning out to all your friends. This virus can and has affected many systems. Some systems have been completely cleaned out because of it. Anonymous 15
