Please make sure you sign the attendance register as it is passed so that we can share with you about what is happening in the life of this church. Thought for the Month: The phrase holding up your corner is derived from the biblical story about four people who take action in order to help a paralytic man encounter Jesus (Mark 2:1-5)...For us, holding up your corner has meaning in two aspects of our lives today: First, it refers to our physical and social locations where our assumptions, attitudes, and beliefs have influence When we feel empowered to speak out about the injustice or inequality in our community, we are holding up our corner. Second, the phrase refers to our actions, the ways we step up to meet a particular problem of injustice or inequity When we put ourselves literally next to persons who are suffering, and bring hope and healing we are holding up our corner. Emphasis for the Month: Discipleship Pastor s Book of the Month: Holding Up Your Corner: Talking About Race in Your Community by F. Willis Johnson 5

10 Health Ministry News January 2017 ADULT VACCINATIONS Active Immunization/Vaccination is one of the great public health achievements in the 20th century. It is the process by which an individual s immune system becomes fortified (fights off) an agent (immunogen) it causes the development of sensitized cells or antibodies which then destroy the foreign molecule. This process is called active immunization (vaccination). These vaccines can prepare the immune system to fight off or prevent infection or diseases and strengthen the immune system. What vaccinations are recommended for adults? Flu Vaccines should be given yearly especially for people with chronic health conditions, pregnant women and adults over 65. The Tdap Vaccine is a vaccine that is used to prevent diphtheria pertussis (whooping cough). Tetanus should be administered every 10 years and given to pregnant women with every pregnancy. Adults over 60 should get the Shingles Vaccine and all adults over 65 should also get the Pneumococcal Vaccines PCV13 dose and 1 dose of PPSV23. All males from years and females from years should receive the Human Papillomavirus which can prevent anal and cervical cancers. Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis A and B Vaccines should be administered at all ages if you do not have antibodies against them. If you are a transplant patient or on immunopression medication such as prednisone or have a weakened immune system for any reason, you should NOT receive the following vaccines: Shingles (Zoster) Measles Mumps Rubella Chicken pox (varicella) persons with egg allergies may receive the recombinant Influenza vaccine because it does not contain every egg protein. If you fit into any of these age groups and have not received these vaccinations, discuss this with your primary care physician. 10
