Not only will Christianity be revolutionized, Christians themselves will become empowered to revolutionize the world. Each chapter focuses on a particular phrase and explores its impact for ministries of service, healing, and justice. 13 Asbury United Methodist Church October 2018 Health Ministry Newsletter National Suicide Prevention Month Forty-five thousand people died by suicide last year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the United States of America. Five Myths about Suicide: Suicide only affects individuals with a mental condition. Fifty-four percent of suicide victims had no diagnosis of mental illness when they killed themselves. Once an individual is suicidal, he always will be suicidal. The act of suicide is an attempt to control or eliminate deep painful emotions caused by painful situations (sexual abuse, rejection, devastating illness or recent or impending crises). Once these thoughts dissipate so will the suicide indentions. Most suicide happen suddenly without warning! Warning signs precede most suicides. People who die by suicide are selfish and take the easy way out most suicide victims do so because they want to end their suffering, which may be either mental illness (often depression) or a very difficult life situation. Talking about suicide will lead to and encourage suicide. (Talking about suicide reduces the stigma and may cause individuals to seek help and rethink their situation.) Risk Factors for Suicide: A family history Substance abuse (drugs, alcohol) Intoxication Access to firearms A serious or chronic medical illness A history of trauma or abuse Prolonged stress Isolation Age people under 24 (especially in the LGBT population) or over 65 A recent tragedy or loss Agitation or sleep deprivation Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) and transgender population (40% transgender person have made suicide attempts!!) 13
