1 Summer 2017 Trinity United Methodist Church Merchantville, NJ Pennsauken United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School August 7-11, 2017 at Pennsauken UMC Journey to the Promised Land Journey with Moses and the Israelites from their slavery in gypt to the Trials they incurred journeying to the Promised Land. All youth from toddlers thru 6th grade are invited to join us as we spend the week Journeying with Moses and the Israelites. Come enjoy crafts, games, snacks & fellowship. VBS begins Monday, August 7 thru Friday August 11th from 6:00pm 9:00pm in Wesley Hall (Monday registration 5:30pm) If you are 7th grade and above, we would like to invite you to volunteer to help in a variety of leadership positions (do you need those volunteer hours for school?!). Please watch the bulletins for leader/teacher meetings. For further information please contact: Cyndi Holshue, VBS Children s Day began here at Trinity UMC in the year 1866 by Rev. Robert S. Harris. The plaque above, which can be found in the chapel as well as an inscription on the large stained glass window in the sanctuary commemorates this event. Children s Day continues to be observed in many Methodist Churches around the world as well as by other religious denominations. Children s Day Celebration Sunday, June 11th ~ 10:00am Combined Worship Service with Trinity and Pennsauken churches on Trinity s lawn. Please join us for a special time of worship and fellowship. We will lift our praises to God outside on the lawn between the church and the parsonage. Our children will lead us in celebration. A picnic of hot dogs, hamburgers and covered dishes will immediately follow.
2 The Lighthouse/Tidings Newsletter Summer 2017 Smart Snacking Snacks, not to be confused with treats, can fit into a healthy eating plan and provide an energy boost between meals, if they re planned right. Snacking guidelines: Snack only when you re hungry. ating out of boredom or for emotional reasons can lead to weight gain. Have snacks planned and portioned out ahead of time. Practice food safety. Keep perishable foods refrigerated or in a cooler bag with ice packs. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables, depending on what is in season or on sale. Fresh, frozen, canned (in 100% juice), or dried varieties are all good options. ating different combinations of foods can be very satisfying and help to curb hunger. Try to include protein, fiber and fat. Snacks that include fruit can also satisfy a craving for something sweet. Suggestions: Make your own trail mix by combining whole grain cereals, nuts or seeds and dried fruit. (Hint: portion into 1 4 cup servings) Blend your own smoothie by adding 1 cup fat-free or 1% milk and frozen fruit to a blender. Mix 3 cups air-popped popcorn with grated cheese or dried spices. Bake vegetable chips, like kale or beets. Roast chickpeas (or garbanzo beans) and season with spices. Make a dip using low-fat cottage cheese or Greek yogurt for raw vegetables. Barbara Wilson, RD There s a new way to support Trinity right from your phone. Visit Trinity s website fwww.gotrinity.org or more information on mobile & other online giving. Or go directly to download the app, find our church and donate. Hello Trinity I think it s safe to say that the last snowflake has fallen In New Jersey for the season. By the time you read this, we will have seen a couple of days where the mercury will have flirted with 90 degrees. I knew that since we were having a relatively cool spring that the heat would arrive without warning. I hope this doesn t get repetitive but I always want to say thank you to the people who help out with making each Sunday service a warm and friendly place to come and worship together. Thank you to the greeters, the ushers, the worship leaders, and those who either help provide snacks, help set up the food or clean up afterwards, and those who give a donation to the cost of the snacks. All of these are important and are appreciated by us all. We can never say thank you too often. Looking forward to the month of June, we will be celebrating the fathers in our congregation on Father s Day. We will also be celebrating the 151 st Anniversary of Children s Day. I m sure that these will both be special days in the life of our church! As we look forward to the summer months, the choir won t be singing as a group every Sunday so we will be looking for volunteers who would like to share their musical talents during the service. Some of our musical volunteers participate in services at both Pennsauken Methodist and Trinity but that is not required. If you are interested in sharing your musical talents, please see either Doc Maddison, Helen Carrell, Pastor Walt, or myself and we ll get you signed up for the Sunday that works with your schedule. Before I close I would like to welcome Pastor Walt and Kathy for another year with our church. We look forward to continuing to work with you as you lead our church. Please keep his family in your prayers. Also please remember to keep the members of our church families In your prayers. And now, in the words of Tiny Tim, May God Bless Us, veryone. Debbie Curcio - Worship Committee Chair
3 The Lighthouse/Tidings Newsletter Summer 2017 Once again this year I had the privilege of attending the Greater New Jersey United Methodist Church Annual Conference. Also attending were Mike O Shea along with his wife Cookie representing Trinity and, for the first-time, Jamie Greenwood representing Pennsauken. For those of you who may not know, Annual Conference is the gathering each year when all of the United Methodist clergy from a given geographical area, itself called, oddly, an Annual Conference, and an equal number of laity representing all of the United Methodist Churches in the Annual Conference gather together. We gather for worship. We remember those clergy and clergy spouses who have finished their earthly journey over the last year. We celebrate those clergy who are retiring. We ordain and commission new clergy to go forth to serve God s Church. We celebrate the ministries happening around the Annual Conference and how God is working through our United Methodist Churches. We also gather to care for the business of the UMC. We set an Annual Conference budget for the upcoming year. We debate and adopt resolutions that deal with various issues we face. We hear reports from various ministries and agencies supported by the UMC. And the Bishop sets pastoral appointments, assigning pastors to congregations, for the upcoming year. All in all, it s a busy, sometimes tiring, always inspiring, three days together with United Methodist sisters and brothers. In some ways, it s like a family reunion, with over 1,400 family members from throughout New Jersey (along with a handful from Pennsylvania and New York) gathering at the Convention Center in Wildwood. For a wrap up, visit gnjumc.org. I am blessed to announce that I have been reappointed by Bishop Schol to serve as pastor of Trinity and Pennsauken UMCs for at least another appointment year, through till July This will start my eighth year at Trinity and my sixth year at Pennsauken. Both Kathy and I are blessed to serve and provide leadership to the churches and community and we look forward to another great year of ministry with you all. Let us all seek to grow as disciples of Jesus as we begin a new appointment year of ministry together. Let us step out in faith together. Let us grow in our generosity financially. Let us be generous with giving of our time, answering God s call to participate in Bible study, attend worship regularly, and be leaders in Christ s Church. Let us be generous in our commitment to make a difference in our community on behalf of Christ our Lord, blessing others as we are blessed. It s going to be an exciting year, my friends... let us move forward with hope and joy at the great things God is doing and will do through us. Pictured above are those who attended this year s conference from Trinity & Pennsauken churches. From left to right are Jamie Greenfield, Pastor Walter Mander, Cookie O Shea and Mike O Shea.
