2 The Lighthouse/Tidings Newsletter September 2017 September 10 th Kick off the school year right! On Sunday, September 10th we are inviting students of all ages to bring their backpacks to church! We will invite the students to come forward during services at both Pennsauken & Trinity UMC with their backpacks so that we can bless the them and their backpacks for the upcoming school year. Grandparents - invite your grandchildren to bring their backpacks! Begins again at Trinity September 10th. All children K-6 are invited to join Doc Maddison for a Bible lesson and activities following the children s message each Sunday during worship service at Trinity UMC. Join Us for Adult Sunday School Classes at Trinity UMC All adults are invited to attend Sunday School classes led by Doc Maddison beginning on Sunday, September 10th at 9:30am. We will be studying the Book of Jonah. No pre-registration is required. Hello Trinity Once again, the summer certainly did fly by! I hadn't checked my for a few days but luckily I got a text from Doc about the choir schedule for September in which he mentioned the newsletter deadline. It feels like maybe we should be midway through July but here we are, very close to Labor Day. Hard to believe. As always, I would like to thank those who willingly accepted the roles of Greeter, Worship Leader, and Fellowship Hosts over the summer. Your contribution is always appreciated. Thanks also to Pat Shockley for your help as a communion steward. Brenda Hamilton and Karen Hoffman are always there to lend a hand setting up snacks for fellowship and Eva Vayo and friends always help with clean up. Thank you for all you do! Also, a special thank you goes out to Skip Harris, Joe Thompson, and other volunteers who serve as ushers on Sunday morning. Peter and Pat Johnston got a break from running the slides for a couple of Sundays but now that we're livestreaming our services on Facebook, I'm not sure how much of a break they really got. Many thanks for stepping up and willingly recording each service. We ve also been enjoying special music every Sunday. Thank you to Doc and Helen for leading the music and for the volunteers who shared a favorite hymn or special song with us. We enjoyed the special music. We are always blessed with beautiful music during the service. As I close, I ask you to keep our church family in your prayers. We ask for healing and comfort for those who are hurting. Please also remember our church and the world around us in your prayers. This was a difficult summer for a few families. Sue Smiley-Greene and Geoffrey Lapp crossed over to glory and we keep their families close in our hearts. Growing up in Trinity, I remember Jerry Williams was always ready to greet everyone with a smile and a handshake. He was also very active with the Boy Scouts. We think of his family and also say a prayer for them as they grieve his loss. Again I ask, may God bless us, everyone! Debbie Curcio Worship Committee Chairperson
3 The Lighthouse/Tidings Newsletter September 2017 Can You Solve Martha Stetson s Puzzle? Karen Hoffman and Cece Torok spent time this summer sorting through and reorganizing the church archives, which includes ledgers, registers, minute books, letters and other records dating back to the 1860s. Trinity s archival collection also includes hymnals and bibles that belonged to David Stetson ( ) and his wife, Martha Stetson ( ), who were instrumental in founding the church. The large stain glass window at the back of the sanctuary commemorates David Stetson. The following puzzle was found slipped between the pages of a book of devotional readings that belonged to Martha Stetson. Can you find the answer to the puzzle? If so, let us know and we ll make sure to include your name, along with the correct answer, in an upcoming issue of the Tidings. Karen and Cece did not try to solve the puzzle, but the women s bible study group, which has taken a hiatus over the summer, is thinking of tackling it when they resume their monthly meetings in October. Here is Martha Stetson s puzzle: What is the Answer? To the number of books of the Bible, add the number of disciples Christ had. Subtract the number of books of the New Testament. Add the age of Joash when he became king. Add the number of spies sent into Canaan. Divide by the number of Egyptian plagues. Multiply by the number of loaves used in feeding the five thousand. Add the number of times the Israelites marched around Jericho on the last day of the siege. Add the number of sons Jacob had. Divide by the number of men cast into the fiery furnace. Add the number of days Christ was on earth after his resurrection. Add the number of years Solomon was King. Add the number of pieces of silver Joseph s brethren received when they sold him into Egypt. Add the age of Moses when he died. Subtract the number of years God s People were in exile in Babylon. Add the number of foxes Samson sent into the fields of the Philistines. Divide by the number of sons Noah had when he went into the ark. Add the age of Methuselah when he died. Subtract the number of books in the old Testament. Subtract the age of Noah when he died. Add the number of fishes used in feeding the five thousand. Add the age of Jesus when his parents took him up to the temple as a son of the law. Subtract the number of pieces of silver Judas received when he betrayed our Lord. Divide by the number of days in which God made the heavens and the earth. Multiply by the number of stones selected by David for his sling when he went out to kill Goliath. W.S.T. (Women Serving Together) invites all women to join their morning bible study group which meets on the first Thursday of each month at 9:30 am in Trinity s library. Please note: Due to an extended summer hiatus our next bible study will take place on Thursday, October 5th.
