1 September 2014 Vol. 80 No. 7 Trinity United Methodist Church Merchantville, NJ Trinity to Celebrate 150 th Anniversary On Sunday, March 15, 2015 Trinity United Methodist Church will celebrate it's 150th anniversary. The weekend of events including a concert, Sunday Morning Worship service and a dinner are being planned by a newly formed committee led by Cece Torok. Beginning on Sunday September 14th we will be exploring Trinity's history. Each month a particular facet of Trinity's faith stories and contribution to our community will be highlighted. For September we will look at the early beginning of Trinity and the influence of the Stetson family and other early residents of the Merchantville community. David and Martha Stetson David S Stetson an active member and trustee of Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church, then on the old Burlington Pike or N. Cove Rd. near the present Bethel Cemetery lived in Merchantville on E. Maple Ave. Mr. Stetson feeling that the boys and girls in this newly settled section of Stockton Township, present day Merchantville, needed religious instruction and realizing the Bethel Church was too far away to effectively help. Mr. Stetson and his wife Martha collected a group of children in their home for study, which led to the organizing of a Methodist Sunday school in the spring of On Sunday, September 14 th we will also honor our long-time members. We will recognize and present with a certificate on that day those who have been members at Trinity for 50 years or more and also those who have a combined membership from other Methodist churches for 50+ years. Please come out to worship on Sunday mornings to connect to the historic faith so faithfully proclaimed throughout the years here at Trinity.

2 Hello Friends! So I m just checking did this summer fly by faster than ever for anyone else? I feel like it was just Memorial Day, I blinked, and here we are at the unofficial end of summer. While I do look forward to the cool fall temperatures and all the colors, I do feel a little nostalgic for those Lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Although, I m not sure how lazy they were. As you probably know, we are gearing up for the 150 th anniversary of our church. You will notice that on the second Sunday of every month, Pastor Walt will focus on a specific topic relating to our history and tie it in to the season or holiday. I think we ll all have some fun learning the history and reminiscing over the stories we ve heard and/or experienced in the life of Trinity. As a special kick off, on Sunday, September 14 th, we will be acknowledging anyone who has been a member of a Methodist church for 50 years or more. If your membership has been at Trinity all of that time, we have those records on file in the office but if you have been a member of another church but have attended or are a member here, please let Cindy our church secretary know so that she can include you in the celebration. There will be special treats during Fellowship Time so plan on staying around for a little while and continue the celebration. I would like to acknowledge the passing of a former minister of Trinity. Rev. Dr. Charles Hankins passed on to glory earlier this month. He was the minister here during my teenage years. He was involved with the youth group so we got to spend time together. I have many fond memories of the years that he and his family were part of our church. It was nice to see him, his wife, and daughter Ruth when he was a substitute minister a few summers ago. Reading the tributes that were added to his obituary, I see how many lives he touched with his ministry as a Navy Chaplain. He truly was a faithful servant who lived the walk. May he rest in peace. Before I close, as always, I would like to thank all who helped out by serving as Greeters, Ushers, Worship Leaders, Multimedia Techs, and Fellowship Hosts. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. I also enjoyed the special music from the soloists who sang or played trumpet over the summer. It was all beautiful. Last Spring we all enjoyed meeting Rocio and singing with her as our choir director. Unfortunately, her work schedule is not allowing her to return this fall but I consider it a blessing to have shared time with her and wish her the best as she continues on her journey. And now, my closing wish. May God bless us, Everyone! Debbie Curcio, Worship Committee Chairperson NEWS Hello Everyone, As summer is winding down I hope that you and your family had a great one. I am sorry to say I have some bad news to report, but I also have good news to report. The bad news is Rosie will not be returning as our music director. Rosie has been offered a managerial job of a big retail firm in Philadelphia. Because of her duties as manager she will not be able to continue as our Music Director due to her schedule. While we will miss her we wish her well in her new endeavor. The good news is we will not miss a beat as we are fortunate to obtain the services of Dr. A. Edward Maddison as our new music director. If any of you were in church on Sunday August 17 th you heard Dr. Maddison sing as he participated in our worship service. The chancel choir will start their season on schedule and the bell choir will soon follow. Dr. Maddison will begin his new assignment on September 1 st. You will be hearing from Dr. Maddison or Doc as he wishes to be called, shortly. Please give Doc a true Trinity welcome. Elaine McBride, SPRC Chair Bring your Backpacks to Worship on SEPTEMBER 7th Classes for all ages Begin on September 7th At 9:30am No pre-registration required for the Blessing of the Backpacks

3 On Sunday, September 7th (which happens to be Grandparents Day) Methodist Homes of New Jersey is holding a Walk for All Ages at Collingswood Manor. The course for the walk will be around Knights Park in Collingswood which is to the rear of the Manor. In addition to a walk there will be family fun activities, food, entertainment and more.. The walk will be led by Finley the Camden Riversharks mascot. The walk is being held to raise funds for The Fellowship Fund. The Fund is presently allocating 5 million dollars a year to defray the cost of residents at the Methodist Homes of N.J. No resident is ever turned out of a facility due to inability to pay having exhausted their financial funds. Walkers and persons to sponsor the walkers are needed. Registration cost is $25 for a family of four, $10 for individuals and $15 for a wristband for all crafts and games. Walk registration begins at 10 a.m. the day of the event and the walk begins at 1:00 p.m. Brochures which contain the day s schedule of events along with walker and sponsor registration information can be found on the bulletin board in the chapel area. All are invited to attend the Service of Installation for our new District Superintendent, Rev. Myrna Bethke WST will begin meeting again in September. The morning group will meet on Thursday, September 4th at 9:30 am The monthly breakfast meeting at the Pennsauken Country Club is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20th. When September 21, 2014 at 6:00PM Where Mantua United Methodist Church 201 Mantua Blvd. Mantua, NJ Light refreshments are being served following the service. An offering will be taken for the Neighborhood Center's replacement school bus. The Center's bus was destroyed by fire in April, in which no one was hurt. The bus is vital to the Center's mission and work. It picks children up from their schools and brings them to the Center for the School Age Program allowing Mom and Dad to stay at work. It brings teenagers home safely at night after they have attended the evening Leadership Academy programs, and it picks up Senior Citizens so they can have fellowship time at the Center. Children are welcome to attend. Childcare will be provided. Trinity s Founders Be sure to join us for worship on September 14th as we celebrate the founders of Trinity Church and we honor Trinity s longtime members and those who have 50+ years in the Methodist Church. Church Conference Church Conference has been scheduled for October 7th at 7:30pm. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Committee Chairpersons: Please take note that all Conference Reports are due to the church office no later than September 23 rd.

5 Maximizing Nutrients in Vegetables and Fruit Shop for fresh produce that is crisp and not wilted. Try to avoid bruising. Purchase fresh vegetables and fruit in season when their flavor and nutrition are at peak levels. Cut fruit & vegetables into larger chunks. When finely chopped, more surfaces are exposed to the air (oxidation), which can contribute to vitamin loss. Adding a little citrus juice (lemon, lime, orange) to cut surfaces can minimize oxidation and nutrient loss. If you must peel: peel as thinly as possible to minimize nutrient loss. Fermented vegetables are rich in nutrients, fiber and digestion-enhancing enzymes. They also help the intestinal tract maintain a healthy balance of flora by increasing beneficial bacteria. Sauerkraut is a common example. Allow garlic, onions, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts to breathe for about 10 minutes after slicing or chopping, before cooking or eating. This will allow time for some nutrients to be released from cell walls and more available for absorption. Do not soak vegetables in water to prevent discoloration. Almost 40 % of the water soluble vitamins and minerals are lost in the soaking water. If you must soak, use up the soaking water to prepare soups and gravies. Steaming vegetables is a great way to keep nutrients from escaping. Cook carrots and tomatoes to yield more antioxidants. Cook vegetables in minimum amount of water keeping the vessel covered and to consume it as soon as possible. Cook vegetables the shortest time possible to preserve nutrients. Zap your veggies in the microwave. Despite the microwave's bad reputation, "nuking" vegetables can maintain or even boost the antioxidant content of several types of vegetables, including carrots and spinach. Let vegetables show their true colors. Cooked just right, brightly-hued vegetables like bell peppers, spinach, or tomatoes will become even more deeply and vividly colored. Let them cook too long, though, and you'll notice once vibrant vegetables turn pale and colorless. Less color usually means less nutritional potential. Barb Wilson RD, CDE 4/2014
