When November rolls around each year I cannot help but think of Thanksgiving. I know that there are so many things going on in our community, country and world that cause us to question the motives of people and why certain things happen. There is no doubt that we live in a world that is filled with evil and sin. People are constantly doing things to harm themselves and others. Natural disasters are occurring everywhere and are causing harm to people and possessions. Sometimes it is hard to see past the evil, but if we stop and think, we cannot help but be thankful. Several of the Psalms have this statement in them, Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. As bad as things may seem to be, we have so much to be thankful for. Our families, our jobs, good health, a roof over our heads, clothing to wear, food to eat, our church family and whatever else one would like to add to the list are just a few of those things we can be thankful for. Some of these may fit where you are in life and some may not, but no matter what we may have going on in our lives there is always something to be thankful for. Ultimately we are thankful for the forgiveness and life that we have in Jesus. Whether we want to admit it or not, everything that we have in this world will eventual fail us, but not Jesus. God is good and He is mercy and His love will endure forever. We can certainly be thankful that Jesus died on the cross to forgive us our sins and was raised to life to assure us that we have eternal life with Him. May this month of November be a reminder for us to be thankful each and every day for all that God gives us here and especially for eternity. May God give us thankful hearts as we continue to share the message of our risen Savior with A Heart for Hamilton County and the World!

5 The Eagle November 2018 MEN S CLUB Sunday morning services can be heard on The Men s Club meets on the 1 Sunday of the month. Join us Sunday, Oct. 7 at 7:15 am for the Men s Club meeting and to help make sausage and pancakes for breakfast. st Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm Sunday mornings at 7:30 am 6 PM Senior Youth Room Contact: Mischelle Beach cell: mbeach1962@me.com Women s Bible Study 8:00 AM A new non-profit organization that has been formed with the goal of providing safe, comfortable and reliable transportation for Cancer patients and their caregivers to and from Houston. Tentative schedule is 10:30 am Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday outbound to Houston from Hamilton and Monday, Wednesday and Friday inbound from Houston arriving at 4:50 pm. Pick-up and drop-off location has not been determined at this point. If anyone in our congregation would like to volunteer on these days and times, we could possibly be the pick-up and drop-off location. If you are interested in St. John being a part of this and possibly overseeing this, please contact the church office and let us know. For further information you can go to 5

8 Music Notes by: Gary Gromatzky Hark The Glad Sound Hark, the glad sound! The Savior comes, The Savior promised long; Let every heart prepare a throne And every voice a song. He comes the prisoners to release, In Satan s bondage held. The gates of brass before Him burst, The iron fetters yield. He comes the broken heart to bind, The bleeding soul to cure, And with the treasures of His grace To enrich the humble poor. Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace, Your welcome shall proclaim, And heavens eternal arches ring With your beloved name. Hark The Glad Sound 1735 Three days after Christmas in 1735, Philip Doddridge was planning to preach a sermon called Christ s Message from Luke 4:18-19 Doddridge was known as a hymn writer, and he would often introduce one of his hymns at the conclusion of a sermon. As was the custom in that day, the hymn was sung line by line from the pulpit, and repeated by the congregation. This hymn is usually called a Christmas carol. After all, the title is Hark the Glad Sound, and it was introduced three days after Christmas, but it really isn t a Christmas carol. It s a hymn about the start of Christ s ministry, and it is a paraphrase of Isaiah 61:1-2 and Luke 4: In these verses Christ announced his mission to bring good news to the poor, to heal the broken hearted, to bring deliverance to captives, and to heal the blind and the wounded. Good news, indeed! The Savior has come! The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn Philip Doddridge ( ) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. 9 Chartering Service FORTRESS Sunday, November 18, :30 PM Harker Heights, TX It s official!!! With all praise to God for His many blessings, the people of Fortress are ready to launch. With a Chartering Service scheduled for Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 3:30 PM, Fortress will no longer be a Church Plant but will be an independent Lutheran church. All are invited to attend this special service which will include the public signing of their constitution and the induction of their charter members. Following the service, the congregation will be invited to stay for a BBQ meal. As the meal is being catered, please RSVP your intentions of attending so that proper plans can be made. 9
