13 O come, O come, Emmanuel, and end this gloom of night. Bring home to the world, bring peace to the earth. And fill us with love s pure light.

14 All: Gracious God, as we continue our Advent journey, we ask that you open our eyes to the beauty and goodness around us and fill our hearts with grateful joy. Remind us that Christ is our light and the source of all joy, and that we are here to serve you and to spread that joy to others. Amen.

15 O come, O come, Emmanuel, and end this gloom of night. Bring home to the world, bring peace to the earth. And fill us with love s pure light.

16 A Candle is Burning A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright, A candle of hope in December s dark night. While angels sing blessing from heaven s starry sky, Our hearts we prepare now for Jesus is nigh.

17 A candle is burning, a candle of peace, A candle to signal that conflict must cease: For Jesus is coming to show us the way; A message of peace humbly laid in the hay.

18 A candle is burning, a candle of joy, a candle to welcome brave Mary s new boy. Our hearts fill with wonder, and eyes light and glow as joy brightens winter like sunshine on snow.

21 The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

39 Why Not a Star (Margaret Gooding)

40 Leader: They told me that when Jesus was born, a star appeared in the heavens above the place where the young child lay People: When I was very young I had no trouble believing wondrous things; I believed in the star.

41 Leader: It was a wonderful miracle, part of a long ago story, foretelling an uncommon life. People: They told me a super nova appeared in the heavens in its dying burst of fire.

42 Leader: When I was older and believed in science and reason, I believed the story of the star explained. People: But I found I was unwilling to give up the star, fitting symbol for the birth of one whose uncommon life has been long remembered.

43 Leader: The star explained became the star understood, for Jesus, for Buddha, for Zarathustra. People: Why not a star? Some bright star shines somewhere in the heavens each time a child is born.

44 Leader: Who knows what it may foretell? People: Who knows what uncommon life may yet again unfold, if we but give it a chance?
