Last month we looked at the first of three mission mindset changes that we need to be willing to consider as we become everyday missionaries. The first mindset change was that we do not go out for Jesus, but we go out with Jesus. Jesus is on a mission and He invites us to go along with Him. He is already at work in people s lives and we go about our everyday lives with our eyes open to observe and look for opportunities where Jesus is already at work. This month s mindset change is focused around the idea that the river has moved. For a long time the church was spanning the river of the US culture. That has rapidly changed. We are no longer living in a churched-culture. Our culture is moving away from the church. What used to attract people to a physical church is no longer working. What used to be the first place people sought out when they moved to a new community, the church, is no longer the case. With everyone s lives so busy, many people feel no need to become a part of church. We may think that people are just not growing up in a Christian home anymore. The sad reality is the fact that more and more Christians who grew up in a church are walking away at an alarming rate. The church cannot expect people to walk through their doors as they once did. Being an everyday missionary means the church (the people) have to go out and connect with people outside the church. We go with Jesus and look for opportunities where Jesus is at work in people s lives. It is being a friend to others. It is talking with people who are hurting or in a crisis. It is getting to know one s neighbors better. It is lending a listening ear to the co-worker who is struggling and has no one to talk to. The beauty of being an everyday missionary doesn t really require one to set aside a certain amount of time to an already busy schedule. It is simply finding ways to connect with people in the places that your everyday life takes place. May we continue to go with Jesus and to share the message of our risen Savior with A Heart for Hamilton County and the World!

7 Music Notes by: Gary Gromatzky Precious Lord, Take My Hand Thomas Andrew Dorsey 1932 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 Some people think this great old gospel song was written by the famous big bandleader Tommy Dorsey. It wasn t; the author was named Thomas Andrew Dorsey, and he was the son of a Black revivalist preacher. Thomas was born in a small town in Georgia in When he was about eleven, the Dorseys moved to Atlanta where Thomas was quickly enamored with the blues and began playing piano at a vaudeville theater. Later the family moved to Chicago where he attended classes at the College of Composition and Arranging. Soon he was on stage under the name Georgia Tom, playing barrelhouse piano in one of Al Capone s Chicago speakeasies and leading jazz bands. Thomas was converted at the National Baptist Convention in Chicago in 1921, and began writing gospel songs and trying to get them published. It was discouraging at first. He later said, I borrowed five dollars and sent out 500 copies of my song, If You See My Savior, to churches throughout the country.... It was three years before I got a single order. I felt like going back to the blues. He didn t, and gradually his reputation grew and his work became known. In August, 1932, while leading music in St. Louis, he was handed a telegram bearing the words, Your wife just died. He rushed to a phone to call home, but all he could hear over the line was Nettie is dead! Nettie is dead! A friend drove him through the night, and he arrived home to learn that his baby boy had also died. I began to feel that God had done me an injustice, Thomas later said. I didn t want to serve Him anymore or write any more gospel songs. But the next Saturday, while alone in a friend s music room, he had a strange feeling inside - - a sudden calm and a quiet stillness. As my fingers began to manipulate over the keys, words began to fall in place on the melody like drops of water falling from the crevice of the rock: Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I am tired, I am weak, I am worn Today Thomas A. Dorsey is remembered as the Father of Gospel Music and the author of hundreds of gospel songs including his equally famous, Peace in the Valley. Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand; I am tired, I am weak, I am worn, Through the storm, through the night, Lead me on to the light. Take my hand, precious Lord; lead me home. When my way grows drear, Precious Lord, linger near, When my life is almost gone, Hear my cry, hear my call; Hold my hand lest I fall. Take my hand, precious Lord; lead me home. It is my hope and prayer that each and everyone of you have a blessed month and that we all join each other in worshipping our Lord and Savior Choir practice has started up again, we would love to have you come and join us and to help us worship our Savior in song. 7
