God With Us! I know that I say this every year, but is hard to believe we are at the start of a new year. As we reflect on 2017, some can say it was the best year of their lives. Others can say it was the worst while others will fall somewhere in the middle. People have experienced all sorts of life-changing events. Some celebrated the birth of a new baby, anniversaries and birthdays, graduations, weddings, job promotions, etc. Others were saddened at the loss of a loved one, job loss, destruction of property due to weather or fire, the heartbreak of some other tragedy, etc. And then there is all the evil things that we have heard and seen about on the news that devastated lives and communities. Everyone of us experience the ups and downs in life. We have times where we might say, It doesn t get any better than this!. On the other hand, we also go through times where we wonder if we are going to be able to make it through the tough time we are experiencing. God never promised an easy walk through life. In fact, He says don t be surprised at the trials we endure as though something strange were happening. I know this is not much comfort as we begin a new year, but whatever we experienced in 2017 we can almost be assured we will experience some of the same in We are more than likely going to experience ups and downs again. But here is the beauty in all of this, we do not experience it alone. While God may not promise a life full of only ups, He does promise that He will be with us. As we saw in the angels appearance to Joseph reassuring him that it was okay to take Mary to be his wife, Joseph was told to name the baby Jesus and that this Jesus would be Immanuel which means God with us. God does not leave us to live on our own. He is with us each and everyday regardless of what we are going through. This is exciting news for us individually and for us here at St. John. I am really excited about what God is doing here. St. John is a place where we gather to be reassured that God is with us. We as individuals of St. John then in turn have the privilege of taking this good news into the various places that God has called us in this world. As we look around it can sometimes be scary, but this also means that we have never lived in a better time to be a Christian. Everywhere we turn we have the opportunity to be a witness of who Jesus is in our lives. People are all around us that are hurting and struggling who need to know the love of Jesus. I look forward to going into 2018 with each of you and to see what God has in store for us. May we continue to go with Jesus and to share the message of our risen Savior with A Heart for Hamilton County and the World!

Five basic tenets of the Reformation will provide the theme for our celebration: Scripture alone, Grace alone, Faith alone, Christ alone, and Glory to God alone. Our celebration will include readings, skits, hymns, and songs from several cultures, of various musical styles, and written across many centuries - from the early Church to present day - reminding us that God's kingdom is "a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands." 7 Music Notes By Gary Gromatzky After all, the angel had announced to her, Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you (Luke 1:28, NASB), and Mary s Magnificat in the first chapter of Luke is one of the most beautiful songs in the Bible. Joseph Cook put the spotlight on the verse in Luke that says, She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them (Luke 2:27). Gentle Mary Laid Her Child Joseph Simpson Cook 1850 Joseph Cook entered a Christmas carol-writing contest in He was not known as a poet, but he had some ideas that he thought should be presented in a Christmas carol. Many of the Protestant carols seem to neglect Mary, he thought, so he wrote a carol to give her proper honor. By the way, Joseph Cook s entry won the Christmas carol writing competition. Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger; There He lay, the undefiled, to the world a stranger; Such a Babe in such a place, can He be the Savior? Ask the saved of every race who have found His favor. Angles sang about His birth; wise saw and found Him; Haven s star about His birth; glory all around Him; Shepherds saw the wondrous sight, heard the angels singings; All the plains were lit that night, all the hills were ringing. Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger; He is still the undefiled, but no more a stranger; Son of God, of humble birth, beautiful the story; Praise His name in all the earth, hail the King of glory!
