1 Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH August 2, 2015 We welcome you to The Hills this morning in the name of Him who died, rose again and forever lives to make intercession for us before the throne of grace. Wednesday Nights The Wednesday Night Study will begin September 23 and will meet each Wednesday from 7 8 p.m. Tom Price will start off the season with a book study on Putting Jesus in His Place by Bowman and Komoszewski. The series will last five weeks. Larry Riekenberg will teach the next four weeks, which takes us to Thanksgiving. After Christmas, Tom intends to teach a fourweek lesson on faith. If you would like to teach a series in the new year, let Tom know. Everyone high school age and older is welcome to attend. Eddie Masters Pastor Eddie Masters celebrated 25 years of ministry on the Indian Hills staff on July 31. We are grateful for Pastor Eddie and JoAnn and for their faithfulness in ministry these many years. May Pastor Eddie and JoAnn Masters God s blessings be bountiful in their retirement. 2 Baptism Truth or Tradition Gil Rugh Few issues throughout church history have been as widely debated as that of baptism. Shortly after the time of the apostles, various and conflicting views began to arise concerning the purpose and methods of baptism. immersion. Some churches baptize infants while others only baptize adult believers. With all the confusion on this issue one may ask, Who is right and how do we know? The lack of clarity on this issue should drive us to the Bible for the answers to these issues. Accepting the Bible as the authority and not church tradition, Pastor Gil Rugh in Baptism: Truth or Tradition, systematically shows what the Word of God has to say about baptism what it is and what its purpose is. Pastor Rugh shows that the Bible is clear on the issue of baptism and that confusion on this topic has come primarily when men s ideas have been added to the Word of God. Evangelism Tools Even today, many churches hold different views on this important subject. Some hold that baptism is a necessary part of salvation while others say baptism is a testimony that one has been saved. 3 Brevity of Life By Gil Rugh Isaiah wrote: All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass (Is. 40:6, 7). To demonstrate the brevity of human life, God compares us to the grass and flowers of the field. If a person works in a flower garden one day and then doesn t return until a few days later, what has happened? The flowers have likely withered. God says it is the same with our lives. We flourish, we bloom, and we are gone. However, the next verse interjects a stark contrast: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever (v. 8). This is extremely significant. There is something in life that is eternal in value and importance, and it is the Word of God. His Word stands in contrast to all the wisdom, power and riches of men because all of those things are temporal and will fade just like the grass and flowers of the field. Our lives only last a moment in the scope of eternity. May we recognize the brevity of life and order our lives around those things which are of eternal value and significance. Heartbeat 5

4 Family News Death. Rodney Schubert s brother, Roger Dale Schubert, died July 27, Birth. Joshua and Jenna Anders are the parents of a girl, Maisie Mae, born July 22, Grandmother is Cheryl Gerstenschlager. Hospitalized. Maisie Mae is a patient at the Omaha Children s Hospital. Hospitalized. Katie Loseke is a patient at BryanLGH East. Children s Studies Sunday School studied Luke 7:36 50 and learned about the two debtors Children s Church studied Joshua 2 and learned about Rahab showing her faith in God. We hope the students will submit in both faith and deed to the victorious God. Information Kids Clubs. We re looking for people who would like to host or help with Kids Clubs next summer. Clubs would be held in the morning and consist of a Bible study, treats, crafts and a little recreation. If you d like to host or help with a club, please contact the church, Mowers. Two men are needed on the mowing team. You will mow one section of the church property once every five weeks. If you d like to help, contact Kevin Wheat, Coats, jean jackets, hats, gloves and more are waiting to be picked up by their owners. Stop by the south lobby and check the coat racks on the far end for your personal belongings. Deaf Conference. Many volunteers will be needed for the Friday- Saturday, October 2, 3 conference.
