1 Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH June 10, 2018 Welcome Thank you for worshiping with us this morning. We worship the living Savior, Christ Jesus, and desire all to come to know Him. These are days of salvation and we live anticipating His soon return. We re thankful for the truth of God s Word and that God is pleased to reveal His purposes and plans to us. His intention is for us to understand His Word, and He has given believers the Holy Spirit. We want to grasp these truths and live in light of His Word. We proclaim He is the sovereign God, in control of everything. May we be faithful as we await His soon return. A Day Is Coming A day is coming when the Lord Jesus will return and take us to heaven to be with Him. We will see the fullness of His majesty and glory as we dwell in His presence. It will be a time like no other. While we wait for that day, the Holy Spirit is transforming us into His likeness. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (1 John 3:2, 3). We don t know when Christ will return, but we do know that He will come again. Are you ready to meet Him? Have your sins been washed away by the blood of the Lamb? Please settle this matter today. If your name is not written in the Book of Life, you will be cast forever into the Lake of Fire. The good news is that God in great love and mercy provided the way of salvation for mankind. At great sacrifice to Himself, the Father sent His beloved Son to earth to die for the sins of the world. The Bible tells us that by confessing our sins and believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior we are forgiven and brought into God s family. Our name will be written in the Book of Life and we will spend all of eternity in Glory. Have a good week. Heartbeat 3

2 We Are to Be United as the Body of Christ Gordie Coffin Philippians 2:1-4 Contention in today s culture (particularly politics) seems to be at an all-time high. Factions and self-seeking agendas mark a clear line of delineation between people. This, however, is not how Christians are to operate. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul makes this abundantly clear in his letter to the Philippians. In the opening chapter of Philippians, Paul promotes unity and unselfishness among believers. His unifying language includes words such as participation (v. 5) and partakers (v. 7). Paul reinforces his call to unity in verse 27: Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel. Clearly, Paul wanted the Philippians to know there are to be no factions among them. In light of the opening chapter s call for unity and unselfishness, Paul opens chapter two with four if arguments for spiritual Gordie and Tami Coffin and family unity: Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion (2:1). Theologian John Walvoord summarizes this verse by stating that a: Christian who is exhorted by Christ, encouraged by the knowledge of His love, experiencing fellowship of the Holy Spirit, and possessing a true heart of compassion and attitude of mercy is equipped to realize spiritual unity. In other words, God s grace leads Christians to unity. 4 Heartbeat

3 Paul exhorts the Philippians in verses two through four: make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Unity and unselfish behavior are to be the aim of every believer because it is the appropriate response to God s grace. Paul then provides the supreme example of love and humility in subsequent verses. Jesus Christ, God incarnate, humbled Himself by becoming a man and dying a criminal s death for the sins of the world (2:5-8). If every believer were to have the same attitude as Jesus Christ, there would be perfect unity among believers. Instead of jumping on the bandwagon of dissension that characterizes our world, the believer is to humble himself and look out for the interests of others; particularly of other believers. This was the attitude of the Lord Jesus Christ. Such humility will result in a unified Church body that honors the Lord. 4 Alpha Omega Teaching First Sixth Grade Kids Gale Engle The young adults in the Alpha Omega group are ministering to our first through sixth graders on Sunday nights. Duane Nelsen, pastor over the Alpha Omega, high school, junior high, grade school and pre-school ministries selected Zach Krieger to orchestrate this six-week program. In his second year of the Alpha Omega Ministry, Zach was up for the challenge. The Alpha Omega group was thrilled to take on this ministry to the kids, Zach said. Many in our group serve in Boys of Faith, Vacation Bible School, Awana, and the Van Ministry. We love the kids. Zach grew up at The Hills and serves in Boys of Faith, the Sunday morning worship service, plays drums for the worship team, andhelps with the Van Ministry. He works full-time at Voss Lighting. This is a good opportunity to serve God, the parents, and the kids, Zach said. Speaking for the Alpha Omega group, we want to be good examples to the kids. We consider it a privilege to bring the Word to them each Sunday night. 6 Heartbeat Zach Krieger Some of the Alpha Omega group have grown up at The Hills and have participated in our youth programs, Zach said. We remember how much we learned and how fun it was, and now we want to serve the next generation. Different young men bring the Bible lesson each week. Zach Krieger, Dalton Dowding, Trevor McLachlan, and Andre Gould teach from the Word and challenge the kids to examine their lives. Snacks are easy since the kids love Goldfish crackers and fruit snacks, Zach said. During game time we play a lot of dodge ball and octopus, where the kids run from one end of the Family Center to the other, trying to not get tagged. Ministering to the kids for the six weeks between the ending of the girls and boys programs and beginning Music Camp is more than just filling the gap, Zach said. The kids are learning and being challenged each Sunday night. Our goal is to keep the kids rooted in the Word, plus, they are a blast to be around.

8 Family News Death. Ruby Valenta died June 6, Birth. Tom and Andrea Jordison are the parents of a boy, Merrick John, born June 3, Hospitalized. Larry Porter was a patient at Bryan East Hospital. Hospitalized. Joyce Pool is now recovering at home. Address Update. Tom and Andrea Jordison live at 6843 Aylesworth Avenue, Lincoln, NE Children s Studies Children s Church. The children studied Deuteronomy 11, and learned about God s promise to bless or curse. The lesson goal is to see the promised results of obedience and disobedience. Information Sound Words will be closed in the mornings June We will be open 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and regular hours before and after services on Sunday. Clothing Outlet will be open Tuesday, June 12 from 8:00 a.m. 6:30 p.m. Donated clothes may be dropped off any time the church is open. Please place clothing inside the box in the Clothing Outlet closet (NE corner, by big canopy). Donated clothes should be in bags or boxes. Please put children s clothes in a separate bag or box. The fall is too far away, let s sing in June! The choir will be singing during the morning service on June 17. To prepare, there will be rehearsal on Wednesday, June 13, at 7:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to sing in the choir if you re usually serving in other ministries in the fall and spring. Our first through sixth grade boys and girls have a study with the Alpha Omega group each Sunday night. 9 will have a Bible lesson, snacks, and games. Parents can pick up their children in the Family Center after Sunday Night Church. The study will run through June 24. VBS Workers. Many workers are needed for this year s Vacation Bible School. We especially need workers for the nursery, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten rooms. Please let Michelle Pietzyk know if you have any questions. VBS Crafts. We need empty foil, wax, and plastic wrap boxes. Our kids will be transforming them into fun periscopes. If you would like to help clean a section of the church once every five weeks, please call Tami Coffin at (402) Gardening in the church flower beds begins each Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in the south parking lot. Tools and gloves are provided. Bring water and a hat. Rainout Gardening. When Wednesday gardening gets rained out, workers meet on Thursday at the same time they were scheduled to work on Wednesday. Nursery Coordinator. One person is needed to share the position of nursery coordinator during the Sunday school hour. Each coordinator would work three months, then have three months off. For more information, call Stephanie Dowding, Door 2 Door Evangelism (in the neighborhoods of Lincoln) meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m., weather permitting. Meet at the north entrance of IHCC (by the security desk). Everyone is welcome to attend. If you ve never been out before, we will pair you up with someone who has experience and you can learn by observing. If the weather looks unpredictable, please check the church website, for instructions. Pickleball meets on Monday from 6:45 9:00 p.m. in the Family Center. Everyone is welcome.
