1 Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH April 30, 2017 It is a pleasure to have you at The Hills this morning and we trust you will find the service worshipful. Our purpose is to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through the study of the Scriptures which testify of Him. Hidden Sin Hidden sin has devastating effects. King David tried to hide his sin with Bathsheba. Later, when it was discovered that she had conceived a child by him, David arranged the death of her husband. David tried to hide his sin, but it took a toll on him. He could not escape his stinging conscience. He was riddled with guilt. When the prophet Nathan confronted him, David finally confessed his sin and was forgiven and cleansed. Are you suffering from hidden sin? Resist the temptation to hide it. There is only one thing to do. Run to God and confess your sin! He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion (Proverbs 28:13). Facts of Salvation Many of you expressed appreciation for Gil s message from Galatians last Sunday night. Following is a summary of the facts of salvation from Galatians 1:15 17: 1. The work of God 2. Founded in His good pleasure 3. Includes our service for Him 4. Planned before our birth 5. Initiated by God 6. The result of His grace 7. Focused in His Son 8. Includes our specific ministry Before We Speak We are to carefully consider everything that comes out of our mouths. Before we speak, we must make sure: Our words are true. (Are our thoughts based on gossip or slander?) Our words are helpful. (Are we building up or tearing down?) Our words are necessary. (Are we finding fault with something of little importance?) Our words are kind. (Are we humble in our approach?) We ve removed the log from our own eyes. Heartbeat 3

2 Lyle Goodenkauf to Teach Three-Week Class Spiritual Battle Between Christianity & Islam Gale Engle Lyle Goodenkauf will be teaching on the spiritual battle between Christianity and Islam. His motivation for investigating Islam and sharing what he has learned comes from Matthew 10:16. Lyle said, This verse, like all Scripture, speaks to believers throughout the ages, and is certainly crucial today: Behold, I am sending you like lambs among the wolves; therefore be wise [shrewd] as serpents and pure [innocent] as doves (Aramaic version). A major false teaching Lyle uncovered in Islam s holy book, the Koran, is that Islam denies the deity of Christ and teaches that Jesus was not crucified or resurrected. Many Bible verses verify Jesus deity and His death and resurrection, Lyle said. One of my favorites that speaks to Christ s deity is Peter s answer to Jesus question, Who do you say that I am? He [Jesus] said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to 4 Heartbeat Lyle and Cheryl Goodenkauf you, but My Father who is in heaven (Matthew 16:15-17). Peter got it right and Jesus confirmed it, Lyle said. Nevertheless, the spiritual battle continues on many fronts. Some say Islam is a religion of peace, but in class we will examine verses from the Koran that show Islam is not a religion of peace and that its ultimate goal is world domination. In his investigation of the Koran, Lyle learned that this worldwide Islamic domination is to be achieved by both violent jihad and non-violent jihad. Violent jihad is achieved by terrorist attacks and war, while non-violent jihad is achieved by infiltration under the guise of peace. Evidence from the Koran will be examined in class that Islam is to negotiate only from a position

3 of weakness and to use lies and deception to achieve domination. Lyle s curiosity with false religions began much earlier in his life. As I listened to the adults discussing various Christian denominations, I realized they often had varying beliefs. I was compelled to check them out and determine which, if any, are true to Christ. As an adult, Lyle s interest in exposing false religions intensified. I had been investigating Islam for several years and saw the threat it posed, and then came September 11, That especially led me to expose it and inform others, Lyle said. Other motivating factors today include the professing Christian churches who avoid investigating Islam out of fear of being controversial or offensive, and the increase in the tri-faith and interfaith movements, which emphasize social unity above biblical truth. This class is designed for anyone who wants to be informed of the 1400-year link with Islam and current events in the world today, Lyle said. It is good to be wise so we know how to pray, act, and share with the lost, while trusting God to carry out His will. This class will meet Wednesdays, May 24, May 31 and June 7 at 7 p.m. in the Bible Learning Center. 4 Girls of Grace Visit the Secret Tea Room Gail DeRiese The sixth grade Girls of Grace class met at The Secret Tea Room (aka Bill and Linda Cooley s house) for their graduation tea on April 14. The morning began with a devotional asking the girls to examine their lives, to see if it gave evidence of being a Christian. If so, the girls were given encouragement to continue to grow; if not, God s plan for salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, was reviewed. Just prior to starting the formal tea, each girl chose a charming hat to wear from Linda s lovely collection! Then these precious girls and their wonderful leaders were seated around a dining room table adorned with exquisite china, fairies and linens! Cucumber sandwiches, chicken salad with almonds on croissants, banana raspberry cream sandwiches, scones with lemon curd, dipped strawberries, swans-a-swimming cream puffs, and of course, tea, were served! What a delightful time we all had! This sixth grade class had a busy year. Besides their weekly study of God s Word, and Pleasant Home training lesson, they also made frozen meals for the food service ministry, Matzah used during the Good Friday communion service, valentine s for the Prime Time class, and made Teddy Bears and baked cookies for others. Our prayer is that each girl comes to a saving faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and this tea would be a wonderful memory for them of sweet Christian fellowship Girls of Grace sixth grade graduation tea party. 6 Heartbeat

7 Girls Learn about Taming the Tongue Girls of Grace Camp is a special time in the life of each girl. It s a time for bonding between girls and a special time for the leaders to get to know each girl and encourage them in their spiritual walk. Since the girls are away from their regular schedules and responsibilities, they have time for oneon-one discussions with leaders and daily Bible lessons. On top of that, the girls will hear a leader s testimony of God s grace each evening. Galen Pfeiffer will be speaking on Taming the Tongue from Psalm 39:1: I will guard my ways that I may not sin with my tongue. Besides Bible time in the morning and afternoon, girls will enjoy crafts, games, paddle boating, kayaking, canoeing, hiking all kinds of trails, swimming, archery, zip line, and a climbing wall. The food is fabulous. Besides a salad/fruit bar, the girls will have pizza, chicken strips, hamburgers, barbeque, and s mores on Saturday evening. Camp will be held May at Covenant Cedars Bible Camp near Hordville, Nebraska. Camp Registration begins today and runs through May 7. All girls currently in second through fifth grades are welcome. Cheryl Frederick was a patient at the Lincoln Surgical Hospital. Hospitalized. Logan Pietzyk was hospitalized and is now home recovering. Dear members and friends of IHCC. I want to sincerely thank you for remembering me in your prayers during the past few months while I was in the hospital off and on more on than off. JoAnn and I appreciated your visits and prayers more than you ll ever know. Since I am not fully recovered, please keep me in your prayers. Pastor Eddie Masters Children s Studies Sunday School. The children studied Revelation and learned about the exalted Jesus Christ. Children s Church. The children studied Acts 17 and learned about Paul preaching the gospel in Athens. The girls will be showcasing the work that they have done over the last year. The theme for the music is hymns, both old and new. Dessert reception immediately to follow.
