Studying God s Word and fellowshipping with His people are essential to the Christian life and we re glad you have chosen to fellowship with the members of this local church today. It is our hope that each one receives the blessings that come from considering how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near (Heb. 10:24,25). One may not realize that our church suffers as a whole when individual members suffer by missing out on worship and Christian fellowship. If we can assist you in any way, whether you need a ride, are not sure where you fit in, or need help with something else, please call the church and we will do everything we can to help you in your personal walk with the Lord. Baptism Tonight When Peter preached the Gospel of Christ on Pentecost Sunday, the Scripture says Those who had received his word were baptized; and about three thousand were added to their number that day (Acts 2:41). Imagine the impact of 3,000 baptisms taking place all over the city. Those baptized were risking much their public identification with the crucified Christ branded them as enemies of the Jewish hierarchy and outcasts of their families and friends. Baptism is correctly perceived by the world as a rejection of one s previous beliefs, a clear statement of repentance from the empty ways of our forefathers. However, God considers our obedience in water baptism of sufficient importance to demand it even when the costs are great. It is important to understand that water baptism is not a part of salvation. One is forever saved from judgment the moment they trust Christ as Savior. However, baptism should be one of the first acts of obedience for every new believer. It should also be one of the next acts of obedience for any not-so-new believers who have put it off. Heartbeat 3

Winter Instructions As cold, snow and ice storms move in, Jeff Horn and Kevin Wheat will try to keep abreast of the weather and road conditions. Weather forecasting is tricky even the professionals don t always get it right but with the help of local meteorologists, our men will try their best to make sure we are not driving when it would be best to stay home. Of course, each of us must use good judgment with the weather, drive safely, pray, and watch out for the other guy! 5 Can Psychology Fix this Broken World? Ed Daly will be speaking at the Christian Business Men s Lunch on Friday, November 18. His topic is, Can Psychology Fix this Broken World? Men of all ages are encouraged to attend, and bring a friend. (Guests eat for free!) Besides enjoying a great meal at Valentino s (70th & Van Dorn), you ll be challenged in the faith. Ed is a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in The College of Education and Human Sciences. After having worked in the schools for five years as a school psychologist, he became a university trainer, and has been training Ed Daly doctoral students for 21 years. He does research, presents, and publishes on intervention strategies for children s academic difficulties in schools. Ed and his wife Anne are the parents of four grown children. 6 Visitation Ministry Brings Comfort Gale Engle According to Pastor Aaron Nicholson, One of the best things about the church is that God puts us in the midst of other believers so we can grow, help and encourage each other. We are not meant to be islands. So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity (Col. 3:12-14). The Visitation Ministry is a means to accomplish the responsibilities we ve been given in Col. 3: God s instructions are clear, Aaron said. and we are rewarded for ministering to others. Prov. 11:25 says, He who waters will be watered himself. Whenever I visit a believer, I leave more encouraged. The Visitation Ministry desires to glorify God by showing mercy. Mercy is a spiritual gift and it is to be given with cheerfulness. The gift of mercy grows as we grow in our realization of 8 Heartbeat God s mercy toward us, Aaron said. The more we understand our own sinfulness and His mercy to us, the more we grow in our ability to show mercy to others. The goal of the visitation team is stated in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. As the director, Aaron sets the direction and vision for the Visitation Ministry. Curt Kuster assists with visits and oversees visitation workers. We have been bought with a price, Curt Kuster said. 1 Cor. 6:20 tell us, therefore glorify God with your body. The Visitation Ministry provides a way to serve the body of Christ and thereby glorify God. In regards to our dealings with people, Aaron said, the goal of mercy is to show compassion, pity, and spiritual affection to one another. Only those who have been redeemed, those who Continued on page 9

7 have come to grips with their own desperate need for God s mercy, can show true mercy to others. After that happens, we begin to see opportunities to show mercy to others in our daily lives and fulfill those opportunities out of both an obligation to God s commands and a genuine desire from our own redeemed hearts. Curt added, Scripture tells us Through love serve one another (Gal. 5:13). It is a joy to minister to someone going through an affliction. After visiting and praying with one who is sick or suffering, I leave thankful that this person is in God s hands. The Visitation Ministry workers desire to use the experiences God has given them to comfort others in their affliction. Those who have gone through a trial have a unique ability to comfort others in a similar situation. Some have come to view their trial as a gift from God that allows them to minister to others. The Visitation Ministry is made up of several teams that visit the sick or suffering. Long Term team members visit shut-ins once a month. Shutins can t come to church, so in a way, we bring church to them. We can stimulate them to love and good deeds (see Hebrews 10:24), and let them know about ministries they can have from home, like prayer and encouragement. (At this time we have more shutins than workers.) Short term team members visit those having surgery and short hospital stays. We are happy to pray for you, visit, line up a meal, or do whatever we can to show the love of Christ to you. Encouragement team members regularly phone and pray for people on the prayer list. We are happy to share Scripture and offer encouragement to you. Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones (Prov. 16:24). Compassion team members care for widows and widowers by coming alongside in their time of need. This may include lawn care, house work, or repair work. Food Service team members help and encourage the sick and suffering by providing meals. If you would like a visit from the Visitation Ministry, please call the church and ask to speak to Aaron or Curt, or leave a message with the receptionist. The lesson goal is to not only praise Jesus with our lips, but to obey him with our lives. Information Pie Pick-Up. 9 Sonshine Kids will be singing in the Children s Christmas Concert on December 18. If you have a child that will be turning four before December 18 and would like them to sing in the concert, they are welcome to join a few weeks early. Sonshine Kids (4s & Ks) meet every Sunday evening at 6:30 in the Sonshine Kids room. Missionary Prayer Group will meet on Wednesday, November 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the Lending Library. All women are invited to join us. Creative Sewers will meet Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 11:30 a.m. for lunch and sewing. Nursery Workers are needed for the second hour.
