1 Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH September 30, 2018 A hearty welcome to you, beloved of God. An exciting season is ahead and we look forward to all God has prepared for us this fall. A special welcome is extended to our visitors and guests. We are glad you are here and invite you to check out all the activities we have available throughout the week. Begin the season right by returning tonight for a time of singing, teaching from the Word, and Q&A with Gil. Autumn Groove All the weekly classes and programs have resumed after the summer break and we are happy to be back in the groove. Be sure to take advantage of all the opportunities available for every age from Sonshine Kids to senior adults, as studying God s Word and serving together helps build godly character. Ministry of Prayer Your prayers serve as the backbone of this ministry. Many have shared how you regularly pray for the Lord s work through this local church and we are thankful for your ministry of intercession. While we enjoy many blessings from the Lord, we must not forget that we are in a battle. The call to duty has been sent out and reinforcements are needed on the front line. If you have retired from active prayer duty, we urge you to reenlist. Put on your spiritual armor and report to the all-mighty, all-powerful God. Prayer warriors are needed to lift up the ministry, pastors, staff, Sunday school teachers, Awana leaders, the brethren, etc. As God s soldiers, each of us must dedicate ourselves to ceaseless intercession. The Holy Spirit will remind us of prayer items and guide us as we commune with the Father. Prayer is hindered when we haven t been faithful, but God is quick to forgive His children, and when we come to Him with a penitent heart, intimacy is restored. May our heavenly Father guide each of us in our commitment to pray without ceasing. Surely we will be amazed at the peace we experience, and humbled to see God s hand at work, in and through us. 2 God Is Unique and Without Equal Scott Bailey Isaiah 46:5, 9 If God were to have an equal, who would it be? Let me think... Mohammad is dead; he died of an illness. Baal is also dead, isn t he? Or did the piece of wood he was made from just rot away? What about Confucius? Dead also? Confucius, really a philosopher rather than a god (but is known as the deity of Taoism), but whatever the belief, he is dead. And what about Mary and Catholicism? Even though they claim that Mary is not a god, they do pray to her... which puts her into the god-like category, right? But she died too, just the same as each of us will die, unless the rapture happens first. I wonder if any of these gods claim to have created the heavens and the earth? I don t think so! But our God has made these claims. Isaiah 40:26 says, Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, the One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, not one of them is missing. This is the God we serve! Is there any god that made a promise to man that their creation would never be destroyed no matter what? The God of the Bible made this promise. Genesis 8:22 says, While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. None of the gods mentioned could prevent global climate change, but in the Book of Jeremiah our God promises it will not happen! Do you not fear Me? declares the Lord. Do you not tremble in My presence? For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea, an eternal decree, so it cannot cross over it. Though the waves toss, yet they cannot prevail; though they roar, yet they cannot cross over it (Jeremiah 5:22). This is the God we serve! The Creator God! Have there been any gods that made an everlasting covenant with a group of people that promises they will be a great, everlasting nation, with a piece of earth that will always be theirs, descendants as many as the sand of the sea 4 Heartbeat

3 shore, and a people that would be a blessing to the entire earth? What god has done that? The Creator God of the Bible has, as recorded in Genesis 12:1-3. Are there any gods that loved man so much, that one would send His only Son to die on a cross to pay the penalty for man s sin, so that man could live? Mohammad didn t do that and neither did any of the other socalled gods in history, but God the Father did that very thing! John 3:16 says it all, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life That is the God we serve! Candidate for Deacon of Adult Sunday School Ed Daly Ed Daly Ed Daly is a candidate for Deacon in the Adult Sunday School ministry. He will share his testimony tonight, September 30. 4 Sunday Night Church Come back tonight for Sunday Night Church. Gil will be teaching and you will meet people on a more informal basis. If you are only attending church on Sunday morning, you are missing much of what the ministry offers. As the weeks and years flee by, we need to capitalize on the opportunities God gives us and sometimes that takes discipline. However, looking back in five or ten years (should the Lord tarry) we will surely agree that a little discipline was well worth what we received in return. Bible Fellowship Hour If you are involved in the Bible Fellowship Hour, which meets Sunday mornings from 8:45 9:45 a.m., you know the blessings that come from studying God s Word and building friendships with likeminded believers. One of the advantages of regularly attending a class is praying for one another and knowing class mates are praying for you. Friends notice when you re sick and help you when you re down. Everyone is blessed when each of us determines to reach out to others in Christ s love. 6 Event Kitchen s First Anniversary It all started with a need and a lot of faith. Many will remember that the old kitchen was deteriorating. It was built in 1976, when interest rates were 18% and we bought the cheapest cupboards and drawers we could find. Although the old kitchen served us well for 41 years, the cupboards and drawers were flaking sawdust and sagging under the weight of the wedding dishes. The old kitchen was also hot, making serving for weddings and funerals a sweaty job. On top of that, the electrical wiring was inadequate. There were not enough electrical outlets to plug in all the crock pots whenever there was a potluck gathering. Besides a lack of storage space, the oven/range was not big enough for junior and senior high banquets, the Pinewood Derby, or other special events. Clearly the old kitchen was on its last leg. When the Bible Learning Center was built in 2000, space was dedicated for a future, updated kitchen on the east side of the Family Center. Kitchen stewards Merrily Bailey, Sandy Frahm, and Jackie Southwick collected a wish list from the many ministries using the kitchen. The list was analyzed and discussed. Finally, plans were made. Kevin Wheat began working on the new kitchen in April Many in the body helped by doing everything from hanging drywall to electrical wiring. The kitchen was finished in September 2017, and the first event to use the Event Kitchen was the Men s Breakfast on September 30. Now, one year later we are celebrating the first anniversary in the Event Kitchen. The Event Kitchen is wonderful, Sandy Frahm said. We have lots of room to work and lots of counter space. The Event Kitchen worked perfectly for Fall Kickoff with tons of food ready on the counters. 8 Heartbeat

7 The ovens and grills are perfect for big events and little events, Sandy said. We also love having everything stored in the kitchen. It s bright, comfortable, and easy to clean. Rachel Gould is responsible for bookings in the Event Kitchen and said, In the last year, the Event Kitchen has been used 114 times. Besides Titus Tuesday and Sunday morning coffee and donuts, the Event Kitchen has been used for Sunday School class potlucks (4), Auditorium Section potlucks (4), Standing Firm functions (3), Girls of Grace (5), Boys of Faith (2), High School functions (5), Deaf Ministry conference (1), Intermission (3), Nursing Home potluck (1), Christmas concert fellowship (1), Caroling party (1), Men s ministries (2), Girls Choir (1), NCHEA conference (1), VBS (1), Wedding/Anniversary (2), and Fall Kickoff (1). The benefits of the Event Kitchen are especially felt during all-church events like VBS, Fall Kickoff, and the Christmas Concert, as well as larger-scale events like Intermission and the Men s and Women s Seminars, Rachel said. The space, equipment, and supplies are invaluable and make large-scale ministry events not only possible, but easy and enjoyable. I love the Event Kitchen, Sandy Frahm said. We even have our own thermostat, so we can keep the kitchen cool even when the ovens and grill are being used. The Event Kitchen has been an amazing blessing. 8 Family News Hospitalized.Dave Nicholson is a patient at BryanWest Rehab. Hospitalized. Sherian McGerr is is a patient at Bryan East. Children s Studies Children s Church. The children studied the Book of Ruth and learned about God s sovereignty. The lesson goal is to trust in God s sovereignty and faithfully obey his commands. Information High School Mansion Builders meet Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 7:00. Mike Little and Tim Pratt are the teachers. All high school kids are welcome. Titus Tuesday. Join us Tuesday, October 2 at 9:15 a.m. Sharon Riekenberg will be teaching about Guilt in our series of lessons called Purifying Our Emotions. Discussion group will follow. Child care is provided Wednesday Night Nursery needs workers in the walking to threeyear-old room from 7:00 8:00 p.m. We also need several adults willing to be substitutes. Call Joanna: Overview of the Bible. Are you a new Christian seeking to learn more about the Bible? Have you been saved for a while, but the Bible still seems like a loosely knit group of unrelated stories? Each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., Rob Schmidt will be teaching an Overview of the Bible in Room 1417 of the Bible Learning Center. This class will provide a basic understanding of the Bible and how its contents relate to one another, the progression of God s dealings with mankind, and the basic geography of Bible lands. For more information, contact Rob at Fundamentals of the Faith. Gordie Coffin and Jeff Horn are teaching the Fundamentals of the Faith class each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in Room The class is intended to provide a good foundation for several important doctrinal areas. The class generally runs about four months and is open to everyone. Girls Choir is open to girls in fourth through twelfth grade. We meet in the upstairs choir room from 5:00 to 6:15 p.m. Choir meets Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the upstairs choir room. We will rehearse 1 hour and 15 minutes every Wednesday and sing every other Sunday morning. Anyone high school and older is welcome. Orchestra meets Wednesday, from 6:00 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Orchestra also rehearses on Sunday from 8:00 8:45 a.m. Boys of Faith meets at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. 10 Heartbeat

9 Girls of Grace meets on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Sunday Night Nursery needs several adults and junior helpers. If interested, contact Joanna Andrews at AWANA meets Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. and kids three years old through fifth grade are welcome. Gardening in the church flower beds begins each Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in the south parking lot. Tools and gloves are provided. Used Book section is available at Sound Words. You may contribute to or make purchases of discounted and hard-to-find books. Our stock is constantly changing in both the fiction and non-fiction categories. Creative Sewers will meet Tuesday, October 2, at 11:30 a.m. for lunch and sewing. Door 2 Door Evangelism (in the neighborhoods of Lincoln) meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m., weather permitting. Meet at the north entrance of IHCC (by the security desk). Everyone is welcome to attend. If you ve never been out before, we will pair you up with someone who has experience and you can learn by observing. If the weather looks unpredictable, please check the church website, for instructions. Mentors for Teachers are now available. If you would like some personal guidance or would like to see if you have the gift of teaching, now is the time to step forward. Several men are willing to help you on your way.
