1 Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH March 25, 2018 A warm welcome is extended to all who have come to worship the Lord through the study of the Scriptures this morning. May we sense His presence as we wait before Him, and may we be ready to heed His voice as He speaks through His Word and by His Spirit. Ministry of Prayer Your prayers serve as the backbone of this ministry. Many have shared how you regularly pray for the Lord s work through this local church and we are thankful for your ministry of intercession. While we enjoy many blessings from the Lord, we must not forget that we are in a battle. The call to duty has been sent out and reinforcements are needed on the front line. If you have retired from active prayer duty, we urge you to reenlist. Put on your spiritual armor and report to the all-mighty, allpowerful God. Prayer warriors are needed to lift-up the ministry, pastors, staff, Sunday school teachers, Awana leaders, the brethren, etc. As God s soldiers, each of us must dedicate ourselves to ceaseless intercession. The Holy Spirit will remind us of prayer items and guide us as we commune with the Father. Prayer is hindered when we haven t been faithful, but God is quick to forgive His children, and when we come to Him with a penitent heart, intimacy is restored. May our heavenly Father guide each of us in our commitment to pray without ceasing. Surely, we will be amazed at the peace we experience, and humbled to see God s hand at work, in and through us. Perfect Peace For centuries men have been at war with one another. Nation against nation and person against person people cannot be at peace with each other. God reminds us in Isaiah that, There is no peace for the wicked (48:22). But God in His grace desires for man to live a peaceful life. Through a right relationship with Jesus Christ, man can finally be at peace with God and with each other. As a result, God declares, Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:1). Heartbeat 3

2 Striving According to the Spirit Scott Bailey How many times in our lives as believers have we missed an opportunity to share the Gospel with an unbeliever or passed by as a fellow believer was participating in a sinful behavior? For the believer, this is something that can make us, and rightly so, very uncomfortable. We have a job to do and our time on this earth is short. So how do we make the most of our time? In Paul s letter to the Colossians in 1:28-29, Scripture gives us the answer: We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me. When we read that passage, a few phrases should really stand out: proclaim Him, every man, strive, and His power. These phrases put our responsibility as believers into perspective. I need to share the Gospel and proclaim Him to every man I run into! This can be a daunting task and one that when we first think about it from a human perspective, seems impossible. But God has the answer for that also, and that is hard work. This takes all my energy, not the work of the lazy person, this is laborious and 4 Heartbeat Scott and Merrily Bailey agonizing! In verse 29, Paul makes it clear that he could not accomplish this task in his own power. Notice what he says: For this purpose, which is proclaiming the Gospel, also I labor, striving according to His power. As we are laboring, the power of God is the thing we need to concentrate on. Hard work and the greatness of His power! These two cannot be separated, because they are both needed. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives us the power and our hard work is accomplished through the Holy Spirit. When we proclaim Christ, we need to pray that the Holy Spirit will give us the opportunity and the strength to do it. When we try to do it on our own we will fail. Sharing the Gospel is not the

3 end of our responsibility, once we have shared the Gospel and the seed has fallen on good soil, our job is just starting. Paul makes it clear that we have a task to accomplish in the lives of those who have accepted the truth: that we may present every man complete in Christ. There s that phrase again, every man. We don t just admonish and teach unbelievers, we also need to admonish and teach believers. Can you see where the arduous labor fits in? This is a tough thing to do, but it is our responsibility as believers. Paul s goal is to present each believer before the Lord, holy and blameless and beyond reproach (Col. 1:22b) and to accomplish this, God uses each one of us! 7 Awana Celebration Night was March 14 After coming back from Christmas break, January, February, and March are a long stretch for our Awana kids, so the leaders scheduled a special night for the kids to do something different from their normal routine. Cubblies loved making slime. Sparks boys divided the Family Center with one side having an obstacle course, nerf gun bowling, basketball, and a shooting gallery. The other side had capture the flag, nerf gun war, including tubes to crawl through and tables to hide behind. Tom Jordison shared the gospel and Andrew Thomas provided special music. TNT boys enjoyed capture the flag and nerf gun war. Tom Jordison shared the gospel. TNT girls had song time with Andrew Thomas, glued popsicle sticks to soup cans, decorated them, and then planted seeds in them. Tom Jordison presented the gospel. The girls enjoyed the nerf gun obstacle course, and ice cream sundaes topped off the evening. According to Awana Director, Galen Pfeiffer, special activities, music, crafts, treats, and a gospel presentation were planned for each age group. Cubbies enjoyed music time and then a gospel presentation by Jim Aust. Middle school girls helped the Cubbies make slime, which was a big hit. Sparks girls went on a treasure hunt. Deb Terry did a gospel presentation on our true treasure: Jesus. The girls enjoyed having their own chalk board on paper and fun snacks. Heartbeat 9

Eddi Reinhard, daughter of Joe and Brooke, is a patient at Children s Hospital and Medical Center. Hospitalized. Lynn McDaniel was a patient at Bryan East Hospital. Prayer Request. Please pray for the spiritual needs of the brethren. Children s Studies Children s Sunday School. The children studied Ephesians 4:1 16 and learned about walking in unity. Children s Church. The children studied Leviticus 19 and learned that God requires holy living. The lesson goal is to seek to be holy by trusting in Christ and obeying His commands. Information Vacation Bible School. VBS will be held June Please note the date change and mark your calendars. Legible Printing. Several people with nice penmanship are needed to print titles and authors on library cards. Child care and regular classes for all kids will continue as usual and we will have a break for refreshments. Everyone is welcome to come and help men, college students, or ladies who don t normally attend Titus Tuesday are welcome. We appreciate the help. VBS Workers meeting will be held Sunday, April 8 at 4:45 p.m. in the chapel. If you would like to help with VBS this year, you should attend this meeting. The Great Awakenings of the Americas will not meet this week. Join us April 4 at 7:00 p.m. Door 2 Door Evangelism (in the neighborhoods of Lincoln) meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. beginning March 26, weather permitting. Meet at the north entrance of IHCC (by the security desk). Everyone is welcome to attend. If you ve never been out before, we will pair you up with someone who has experience and you can learn by observing. Teachers and Song Leaders are needed at Woodlawn (near 84th and O) starting the third Sunday in May; at Country House (70th and O) on the fourth Sunday of every month; and at three other locations.
