1 Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH June 17, 2018 Happy Father s Day Grace and peace to you, beloved of God, on this day set aside to honor our fathers. We re thankful for the many faithful fathers in our church family and for the godly model they set for us. Not only are these men role models for their children, but their love and devotion to God is an inspiration to all of us. Our fathers come from all walks of life: business, law, farming, sales, labor, etc., but it is their love for Christ that is demonstrated in their values and their way of thinking and acting that stimulates us and the next generation to build our lives on the solid rock. God s blessings to all our fathers! About Our Fathers It has been said that, A father is someone who carries pictures where his money used to be. While raising children certainly has a thinning effect on Dad s wallet, that is only the tip of the iceberg concerning the sacrifices a godly father is willing to make for his children. We are blessed to have many godly fathers in our church family and we re thankful for the good example they set for us. These men take their God-given responsibility seriously, and are not fooled by the world s wisdom which tells them the trick to being a great dad is to be a friend, hang out, and have fun. While spending time together is certainly not wrong, what Proverbs says about being a father is much deeper than that. If we teach our children trivial things, we ll raise trivial children who will teach their children trivial things. If we teach our children deep things, we ll raise children who teach their children deep things. The world tells us that the father is to take out the trash and that his main responsibility is to bring home the bacon and fix things around the house. The world is wrong. Scripture tells us that the primary duty of a father is to teach wisdom to his children. This word dominates Proverbs and does not mean simply thought but conduct. It means to live righteously. Fathers are to teach their children spiritual wisdom. Children must be taught that wisdom is better than jewels and all desirable things cannot compare with her. 2 Bond of Unity in the Holy Spirit Duane Leach The apostle Paul is not only a brilliant theologian, he is very practical in his instructions about how to apply the theology he teaches. Chapter four is the beginning of the application section of Ephesians and in verse 1 we read, Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Paul starts this section by telling the Ephesians that he s not asking them to do something that would be beneath him. He has been an actual prisoner for the sake of the testimony of the Lord. He has the credentials to call on them to follow the Lord s will. He knows that obedience can be costly. He also has a pastor s heart and exhorts them to apply what he has taught them about their election by God and His placement of them in the body. They, and we, must be serious to live lives that reflect that high calling. Having been placed in the local church as God willed, we are equipped by Him to accomplish what He Duane Leach intends. We come from many different backgrounds and circumstances, often having very little in common, but we all have the same Holy Spirit indwelling us. He is the One who will enable us to walk in a manner worthy of our calling. The apostle is calling for two things that will be the result of such a walk; showing tolerance for one another and preserving the unity of the Spirit. Tolerance of one another, motivated by love, will be necessary if we are going to maintain our unity. We re going to have to overlook and tolerate things in others to be obedient. It sounds negative but if our motivation is love, it s a positive thing. 4 Heartbeat

3 Notice that we aren t being asked to produce unity but preserve it. The unity we have been given is supernatural, completely unlike anything the world can produce. In this case, at least, it s easier to keep something you already have than to gain something you don t have. We are told to preserve what we have been given and we must do it with diligence. Diligence is defined as steady, earnest, and energetic effort. So, we must be prepared to work at it. How do we do that? One very practical way is to be involved. We have been gifted spiritually so that we can build up our church. This isn t a plea to teach a class or clean the bathrooms. Those things need to be done but there are other things of a different sort. Nothing we do as a church will be as effective as it should be without prayer. Everyone can pray for the ministry. How about not listening to gossip or having negative conversations about church matters? We could concentrate on obeying the one anothers with humility and gentleness. Wouldn t it be great if we all worked at being positive, offering encouraging words and building others up at every opportunity? 4 Summer Music Camp Andrew Thomas Indian Hills Summer Music Camp begins Sunday evening, July 1 at 6:00 p.m., and includes all children going into first through eighth grade in the fall. Over the next nine weeks, our kids will learn about the Lord, new songs, new instruments, and a little music theory. A concert to demonstrate what they have learned over the summer will be presented Sunday evening, September 2, at 6 p.m. First third graders will begin the evening in the Family Center at 6 p.m. where they will learn at three music training centers. They will learn about music signs, notes, rhythms, basic knowledge of the keyboard, how to sing on pitch using the floor staff, and a little music theory. They will then have treats and go upstairs to learn the music for the concert. Upstairs they will have a Bible lesson. They will learn new songs and actions for the concert and I ll help them ponder on various song lyrics from a spiritual perspective. Fourth eighth graders will also begin the evening at 6 p.m. in the choir room with a Bible lesson. After refreshments, they may choose one of the following electives: percussion, marimba, puppets, or guitar. Students may try any of them the first week. (Please bring your own guitar if 6 Heartbeat Andrew & Vanessa Thomas you have one.) All first through eighth grade students are encouraged to attend Summer Music Camp. Those attending will be taught musical skills that can be used for the rest of their lives to praise and worship our God. 6 The event we have been anticipating for months has finally arrived. After much work and preparation, we are ready to present God s Basic Training. VBS will be held Monday Friday, June from 9:00 11:45 a.m. All children four years old through sixth grade are welcome. Children who have not been registered are still welcome. Bring them Monday morning and we ll get them signed up and ready to go. This is a busy and exciting week at the church. Over the years there have been countless stories of how the Lord has used VBS, not only in the lives of children, but in adults as well. Besides a lesson from the Bible, children will enjoy recreation, crafts, songs, a play, treats, and fellowship each day. We have a great opportunity before us. As we share the message of salvation with churched and unchurched kids this week, may we be found faithful. No doubt each worker will be exhausted by Friday afternoon. May God grant each weary soul the satisfaction of doing His will and a job well done. A kick off meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. today for everyone helping with VBS this week. 8 Family News Birth. Gordie and Tami Coffin are the parents of a boy, Carter James, born June 10, Hospitalized. Ruby Rogers was a patient at Bryan East Hospital. Children s Studies Children s Church. The children studied Joshua 1 and learned about God calling Joshua to be His servant. The lesson goal is to live as a servant of the Lord. Information VBS Kick Off Meeting is today at 1:30 p.m. in the Family Center. All VBS workers should plan to attend. The VBS decorating closet will be opened once the meeting is over and room decorating will begin. No room decorating should occur prior to the meeting. Van Drivers and Riders are needed for Sunday nights. Contact Dalton Dowding at for more information. Summer Music Camp will begin Sunday, July 1, at 6:00 p.m. The finale will be presented on Sunday, September 2, at 6:00 p.m. Kids (1st 6th) Study with AO. Our first through sixth grade boys and girls have a study with the Alpha Omega group each Sunday night. Children should sit with their parents for the music portion of the worship service, then go to 10 Heartbeat the high school room where they will have a Bible lesson, snacks, and games. Parents can pick up their children in the Family Center after Sunday Night Church. The study will run through June 24. Cleaners Needed. If you would like to help clean a section of the church once every five weeks, please call Tami Coffin at (402) Gardening in the church flower beds begins each Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. in the south parking lot. Tools and gloves are provided. Bring water and a hat. Rainout Gardening. When Wednesday gardening gets rained out, workers meet on Thursday at the same time they were scheduled to work on Wednesday. Door 2 Door Evangelism (in the neighborhoods of Lincoln) meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m., weather permitting. Meet at the north entrance of IHCC (by the security desk). Everyone is welcome to attend. If you ve never been out before, we will pair you up with someone who has experience and you can learn by observing. If the weather looks unpredictable, please check the church website, for instructions. Baptism. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ and have not yet identified yourself with Him through water baptism, pick up a copy of Preparation for Water Baptism. The booklets are free and are

9 available in the lobby book racks. Then, call the church and ask to schedule a baptism interview. Teachers are needed the second and third Sundays at High Place Nursing Home (84th and Old Cheney).
