We look ward to seeing all of you and the start of a fun year of learning what it means to be a Christian. We encourage you to bring a friend the fun. Hope to see you there. Mr. Howell, Mrs. Engeldinger and Mrs. Waypa Joint Men s Club Please join us our joint Men s Club meeting Tuesday, October 10th at Pioneer. Dinner will be at 6:00 PM. Dr. Jim Boren will present pictures and inmation about his trip to Egypt after the meal. All members and friends of both Pioneer and First Pres. are invited! SAVE THE DATE! Members of Pioneer Presbyterian and First Presbyterian are invited to a special service! Join us at 10:00 am as we gather by the river our annual OUTDOOR SERVICE and PICNIC on Sunday, August 13th Pioneer Presbyterian Church Music by Voices of Peace. Picnic after the service. Freewill donation to purchase school supplies needy children in our community Members of Pioneer are asked to bring a salad and First Presbyterian members are asked to bring a dessert to share. Sunday School at Pioneer Please join us a fun year of learning and fellowship! Sunday School starts on September 10 at 9:00 AM. We will also be gathering a Back to School celebration on Sunday, September 17 at the Boyce home! Time and details to follow.

2 bringing on change I can t believe how quickly the summer is flying by. It is already August and soon it will be time our students and teachers to return back to school. One of my favorite commercials is a Staple s commercial where the father is gleefully rolling through the store during the Back to School sale. The dad is dancing down the aisles to the Christmas tune, It s the most wonderful time of the year. Meanwhile, his two children are trailing behind downtrodden and listless as if they were being sent to work in the salt mines. As a father, I can laugh about that commercial, but as a child, I actually enjoyed going back to school. New teachers and classes, new clothes, and reconnecting with classmates made back to school a special season. I still enjoy this time of year. As a pastor, I look ward to Fall. There are new Bible study classes, Sunday school programs, the Chancel Choir and Bell Choir resume. Parishioners are returning from their vacations. And who can get about football season! There is so much to look ward to with the coming school year. As I look towards Fall, I am excited about new opportunities and possibilities that these churches have bee us. God is doing amazing things within our communities and he invites us to participate in his life-giving work. All we must do is simply look around and we can t help but see places where God s grace needs to be sowed and cultivated. It is a responsibility of your Session leadership to identify these opportunities and organize our collective response according to our values and goals. Each year, we become better at aligning ourselves to our core values, but there is still a lot of work to go. Leading change is an ongoing process and if we are going to truly live out God s purposes both churches, then we will need to keep trying new ways of being the Church and learning from one another s successes and mistakes. God has called and built these churches separately over the last 150 years. As sister Presbyterian churches, we have a common heritage and faith, but each church also has its own unique history, culture, and values. I experience these differences each Sunday during worship. I have often said that pastoring two churches is like being a parent with two adult children. As a parent, you love both of your children; yet you also realize how special and unique a blessing each of your children are. Sometimes, one child has more difficulties than the other and requires more eft, but as a parent, you still love both of your children equally. My hope is that we can benefit from our shared and unique experiences in carrying Christ to the Tri-City area. In this change process, as leadership and members, I wouldn t want us to be like the parent in the Staple s commercial, blissfully moving along while the two children are listlessly dragging behind. I acknowledge change is hard, but we need to do it together, carrying the burden together as well as the joy. I am looking ward to the coming year and all that God is going to put bee us. May God bless each of us in our work together and separately. In Christ, Pastor Jon Bible Study Our Bible Study will resuem on September 13th and we will be studying the book of Isaiah. Aug. 6th Carol Symyneshen & Janet Smith Sept. 3rd Janet Johnson & Carol Mick Homebound Communion will be September 3 with Janet Johnson assisting Pastor Jon. The Harbor s service is held the first & third Thursday of each month at 3:45 p.m. by Pastor Jon. Pastor Ryan Edwardson from Menominee First Unitd Methodist and Pastor Tom Lach from Community Covenant Church will also be leading services. Deacons who are assisting: July 13th Carol Symyneshen July 20th Alice Estebo July 27th Pam Maye Aug. 3rd Mary Ann Langill Aug. 17th Sue Plautz Aug. 24th Carol Symyneshen Sept. 7th Pam Maye Coffee Hour Sept Helen Thibodeau, Sue Plautz, Carol Mick and Janet Johnson. Food Donations went to the Salvation Army and was handled by Sue Plautz. Prayer table is being handled by Mary Nelson. She addresses cards birthdays and special needs. The congregation signs and then cards are addressed and mailed by Gina. A special thanks to Janice Wilke buying the cards. Next meeting September 18th. Presbyterian Women The Presbyterian Women will meet on September 7 at 10:00 am. Book Club The next two meetings the Book Club will be August 24th and September 28th at 6:30 PM. We meet at Harbors in the fourth floor library. The August selection is Sarah by Marek Halter. The story of Sarah--and of history itself--begins in the cradle of civilization: the Sumerian city-state of Ur, a land of desert heat, towering gardens, and immense wealth. The daughter of a powerful lord, Sarah is raised in great luxury, but balks at the arranged marriage her father has planned her. The groom is handsome and a nobleman, but on their wedding day, Sarah panics and impulsively flees to the vast, empty marshes outside the city walls. There she meets a young man, Abram, a member of a nomadic tribe of outsiders. In September we will be discussing A Week In Winter by Maeve Binchy. Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know each other. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. We would love to have you join us and share your favorite books with us. If you need a ride please call Janet Johnson at Mission News We will continue to collect personal items men, women, and teens. These items will be donated to The Abundant Life Mission (the homeless shelter). Please place your donations in the basket in the Gathering Room. Thank You! 4

5 NEWS first presbyterian church of menominee Reminders The first Sunday of each month is the Food Pantry Collection. The Deacons gather the donations and distribute to local food pantries. The loose coin offering is collected the third Sunday of each month. All change is donated to local mission work. Anyone wishing to sign up Flowers or Coffee Hour can do so on the bulletin board in the Gathering Room. The sign-up sheets are a three-month period but if there is a special date that isn t there and you would like to reserve it, please contact the church office and it will be reserved on the calendar. If you know of someone who would like to added to our current homebound church list, please contact the church office as we update it frequently. A Deacon will be contacting the individual to setup home visits and discuss their needs. Backpack & Christmas Shoebox Project 2017 School supplies are now coming out in the stores the upcoming school year. Would you consider buying a few extra the annual Backpack and Christmas Shoebox projects? Backpacks, 2 pocket folders, 3 X 5 index cards, colored pencils, scissors, liquid glue, crayons, pencils, pens, rulers, erasers, notebooks, watercolor paints, glue sticks and small notebooks are just some suggestions. They don t accept scissors or liquid glue the shoebox project. As always, MONETARY DONATIONS are excepted if you would prefer us to do the shopping. Donations can be dropped off at the church office.
