1 Seeds of Grace December 2016 Atascocita Lutheran Church October 2017 Sunday Worship 9:30 am - Holy Communion with a mix of traditional and contemporary music Happy October!! Fall Festival is almost here!! A few reminders: If you are baking potatoes for Food Service, you may pick them up in Fellowship Hall Sunday, October 8th. Return them baked Saturday morning. Goodies for the Bake Booth may be dropped off Friday. Please label what they are so people won't have to guess. Package cookies, brownies, etc. 2 or 3 in a baggie depending on size. Raffle tickets will be available for sale October 1st. It would be very helpful if church groups, families, & individuals donating items for themed Raffle baskets could have them here by the 8th so there is time to prepare them. Also, any items for the silent auction would be fantastic. Our ALC men will be cooking the meat Friday. If anyone has large coolers that could be used for food service, please contact Erik Mikesell or Vernon Harris. Canopies that could be used to help shade some areas would be helpful. Friday we will set up for Saturday. If you have any "free time" your help will be greatly appreciated!! The Fall Festival in a team effort. Check out the volunteer sign-up sheets in Fellowship Hall to find your opportunity to share your time to provide a fun community event and help others. 2 A Note from the President Hi Everyone, In the past few weeks we have seen a great deal of change at Atascocita Lutheran Church. We have seen the departure of Pastor Tim, Kaia and the boys and the departure of our music director. I have asked myself why so much at once? My thoughts are that God has a plan for us and he has challenged us to step up. We can be negative, or we can be positive in knowing God is in charge. We must be patient and trust. Already we have seen some barriers come down. We have seen people step up to help plan and provide a worship service. We have been able to plan and put in place music. My thanks to Lisa Worthen for playing for us. Pastor Blair Lundborg came to let us all know how things are under control and how we will move on from these changes. We have seen people step up and help those affected by the flood. We have opened our church as a temporary shelter and opened our doors to a church in need of a place to rehearse the choir because their building was destroyed. We have seen God thru his people. We watched as people came from all over the country to help those who lost everything. Regular people who felt the need to help and did not hesitate. That was God at work. We are going thru some changes at our Church but we will work thru them and follow as God leads. The Leadership Team is meeting often and will keep everyone advised as we progress. We have begun the process of selecting a call committee. We are asking members to participate who represent various ages, backgrounds and experiences. Seven members will be selected then a congregation meeting will be held to endorse those members. The call committee will take on the job of working with the Synod to recommend the call of a new pastor. Soon the Synod will recommend an Interim Pastor who will be our pastor until someone is called. The Leadership Team wants to thank everyone for helping during this time. We have great ministry leaders who haven t missed a beat. We will move forward and see what the plan is. I know it will be great one. Thank you all. In His Service Dan Cargill 2

Employment Opportunity Chrysalis School is hiring substitutes for the school year. We are looking for individuals who work well with children and families and will support the lead teachers in implementing a developmentally appropriate preschool program in a safe and loving Christian environment. This is a fun and rewarding part-time job. Please call Renee Wallace at for more information or to apply. Thank you to the wonderful service of the Word & Sacrament Team. We will continue with the current schedule through the end of the year. Currently we are not doing anything Special for 500 th Anniversary of Reformation except to encourage all you see to wear RED Sunday October 29, We will schedule another Clean the Sanctuary Day early in November. 4 Two Dollars for Every Dollar HAAM has an opportunity to make a dollar for every dollar you contribute! The David Weekly Foundation has generously offered up to $25,000 to go directly toward disaster relief. That means that if you give a dollar, they give a dollar. And to make this gift even better, the Alliance of Community Assistance Ministries has offered $10,000 to help HAAM jumpstart this challenge. Dear Folks, I visited with Cathy at HAAM and she updated me on needs for their clients. They are in need of cleaning supplies and non perishable food items. They are okay now with hygiene items and diapers. Cathy said that HAAM would like to have items for Seasons of Sharing for Thanksgiving portion by November 8. We decided that ALC could contribute 1# bags of rice and 1# bags of beans and we should probably start our drive soon for this collection. Other items on their list are brownie mix, corn bread mix, boxes of stuffing mix and mashed potatoes, also canned fruit. We may contribute similarly for Christmas if we wish but they have other businesses that contribute for Christmas so need hopefully will be less. Our church is signed up in December noon to help sack and hand out items from HAAM food pantry. I believe we only need 6 volunteers and that may be too many because of space. If it is okay with you all I will put in October newsletter and all of news in pews and Thursday blast in October. We can put in November newsletter also. ALC deserves a big hug and lots of kudos for all that they have contributed to our community from school supplies to providing temporary shelter for Harvey victims including distributing donations within nearby communities in need. Hopefully folks will contribute to Fall Festival as this is a means to earn monies to contribute to agencies that we support within our community. See you at the Fall Festival at ALC on Oct.14. 5 Sunday School Hour 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Preschool : ages 3-5 and potty trained, is located upstairs; turn right at the end of the hallway. Lower Elementary : grades K-2, is located upstairs in the first classroom on the right. Upper Elementary : grades 3-5, is located in the cry room in the back of the Sanctuary. Lesson plans and materials have been preselected and will be provided for you, giving you ease of preparation. Please consider and pray about your commitment to this ministry. 7 Book Club The ALC Book Club meets on the second Monday of every month at the church. Members take turns selecting a book and hosting the evening. All are welcome to join the discussion whenever they are able. This is a great opportunity to invite a non- ALC friend to come along. Please stop by and check it out!!! You will enjoy entertaining discussion, yummy snacks and a lot of laughter!! Our next meeting will take place on Monday, October 9 at 7 p.m. and we will be discussing A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. This irresistible novel about an angry old man is an uplifting exploration of the unreliability of first impressions and a gentle reminder that life is sweeter when it is shared with other people. 7
