4 Corpus Christi Catholic Church A Testimony from parishioner Lori Fusak about her Mission Trip to India First off, I want to thank all of the Corpus Christi parishioners for their prayers and support towards my summer mission trip to India. I could not have done it without you. I am so blessed to have had this opportunity and grateful for the many lessons I learned while partaking on this journey. Many people are aware of my passionate devotion to Mother Teresa. It is she who taught me to see the face of Christ in everyone I encounter, especially the poorest of the poor. She has also taught me to always have trust in Jesus which has brought me so much peace in the most difficult moments. I spent the majority of my trip in Kolkata (Calcutta) which is where Mother Teresa first began her works of service for those suffering in streets. I served daily at Prem Dan (Hindi for Gift of Love ) which is a home for the dying destitute. The patients who are there have been abandoned from hospitals are literally left to die in the streets. 4 At Prem Dan, the Missionaries of Charity sisters and volunteers from all over the world come to serve these precious people in need. Not only are the patients receiving a roof over their head, clothing to wear and food to eat, but they are receiving much more. The volunteers give special attention to each patient by rubbing lotion on their legs, clipping their nails, putting coconut oil in their hair and other small acts of kindness. Unfortunately, in India, these patients are considered untouchables and outcasts, so it means a lot to them when to receive tender love from the sisters and volunteers. I want to share with you a meditation by Mother Teresa that is very similar to my experience: A girl came from outside of India to join the Missionaries of Charity. We have a rule that the very next day, new arrivals must go to the Home for the Dying. So I told this girl: You saw Father during Holy Mass, with what love and care he touched Jesus in the Host. Do the same when you go to the Home for the Dying, because it is the same Jesus you will find there in the broken bodies of our poor. And they went. After three hours the newcomer came back and said to me with a big smile I have never seen a smile quite like that Mother, I have been touching the body of Christ for three hours. And I said to her: How--what did you do? She replied: When we arrived there, they brought a man who had fallen into a drain, and been there for some time. He was covered with wounds and maggots, and I cleaned him and I knew I was touching the body of Christ (Mother Teresa; GG, 56-57). Jesus said, Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me (Matthew 25:40). With that being said, the greatest lesson I learned was to treat everyone I encounter as Jesus. Even though I only spent one month in Kolkata, I feel that I can call this city a home away from home. Through the bustling city of crowds, honking taxis and poverty, I felt I was where I belong. I would go back in a heart-beat if I had the opportunity. As much

5 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 27, 2017 as I want to go back, I constantly remind myself of what Mother Teresa said, Calcutta is everywhere, meaning, we do not need to go far to serve those in need. Right before I left for India, I had graduated from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication with a bachelors in journalism and public relations. When I returned home from India, I began my first full time job at St. Vincent de Paul doing community and media relations. I thank Jesus for providing this wonderful opportunity. You were in my prayers during my mission trip. I had the chance to pray at Mother Teresa's tomb every day and kept you all close to my heart during that time. Thank you again for your prayers and support. I appreciate you tremendously. Know that I am still praying for you all and wish you all the very best. CATHOLIC EDUCATION Attention Elementary School Parents: Parent Meeting this Tuesday, August 29 th at 6:30 pm in the Parish Center for our kickoff. Only one parent needs to attend. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Would you like to help your child enjoy a relationship with God? The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based approach to the religious formation of children that is rooted in Sacred Scripture, Liturgy, and respect for the child s rich relationship with God. Central to CGS is the atrium, a room containing beautiful materials that focus the child s attention on key scripture passages or liturgical moments. After an introduction by the catechist, the children are invited to work with a material on their own to continue their meditation. Because children learn by using their hands, working with materials allows them to enter more deeply into meditation, nurturing their relationship with God. Atrium is offered for children 3-5 years of age on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30-11:00. Sessions begin on September 12 th & 13 th. All Catholics living in the Parish area and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs. Adults 18 and over need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get married, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors. In order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or to receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program. Registration forms can be filled out in the Parish Office or via our parish website. How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. A preparation class is also required for parents prior to the child s Baptism and are offered once a month. How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the parish office at DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as Last Rites, waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive. How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.

12 This year marks the 100 th anniversary of the Blessed Virgin Mary appearing to three little shepherds in the small town of Fatima, Portugal. Our Lady entrusted to them a message for the world: pray for world peace and the conversion of sinners. Our objectives are simple: We will use this time for prayer, penance, and evangelization, particularly to encourage family prayer. Use these 54 days, to gather your family in prayer. 1. We humbly suggest that at the beginning or end of each day, or during a meal, pray with your family either: One decade of the Rosary (if you have young children), or a full rosary 2. Followed by the Family Prayer of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. 3. Include any special intentions that your family may have along with our specific intentions. Our specific intentions will be the following: 1. That this parish will be a hospital for sinners, a place to come to know and receive the Mercy and Good News of Jesus. 2. The end to abortion and all violence against the most innocent and vulnerable. 3. An increase in vocations to Priesthood and Religious Life. 4. The strengthening of the vocation of Married Life. Family Prayer of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the Centenary of Our Lady of Fatima M other Mary, we consecrate our entire family to your Immaculate Heart. We desire to renew the promises of our baptism and place each member of our family, through this consecration, into loving union with your Holy Family. At Fatima, dear Mother of God, you appeared with St. Joseph and the Child Jesus, blessing the world. Intercede for our family that each of us grow in the virtues and joy which you lived as a family. Help us to grow as faithful disciples of Jesus; help our domestic church to grow as a light which gives your Son glory from our home. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for Jesus peace to fill each member of our family. (You may wish to name each family member, or a particular family member, at this point if it seems right to do so.) Never permit any member of our family to stray from the Catholic Faith. For any member of our family who is beset by doubts, we beseech you to be their guide through the darkness back to the light of your Son. Watch over our perseverance so that we may all one day be reunited with you and the whole family of God in our Father s house. Amen
