Mark 13:31 GOD S REIGN By pointing to the end times, today s readings speak to the coming reign of God, when God will make all things new. In Christ, this time has already begun. We, by our energized watchfulness, can further God s reign. We can heal broken hearts, free captives, spread the Good News. Even so, the reign of God will not be complete without the second coming of Christ. Our weekly Eucharistic gathering is a sign of the fullness of the end times. At Mass we join as an assembly to recall and to claim the story of Jesus as our own. Together we give thanks to God for the many gifts bestowed upon us. We receive nourishment in the simple but profound meal. And our weak and weary selves are invigorated and transformed by the power of Christ, so that we ourselves might become effective signs of God s reign present and to come. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

3 Sunday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary St. Cecilia; Thanksgiving Day St. Clement I; St. Columban; Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro St. Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions CECILIA (DIED 230 OR 250?), VIRGIN & MARTYR (MEMORIAL) There are few verifiable facts about the life of St. Cecilia. Legend says that she was a young Christian woman who converted her husband, Valerian, and his brother, Tiburtius, both of whom were martyred for their faith. It was a dangerous time to be a Christian, and St. Cecilia, too, was put to death. It may be that this early martyr was a musician. Images of St. Cecilia often include a viola or small organ, and she has been acclaimed as the patron saint of sacred music and musicians since the fifteenth century. In the Office of Readings for today, St. Augustine urges, "Let us sing a new song not with our lips but with our lives... Every one of us tries to discover how to sing to God." How do I "sing to God"? What gifts and talents do I have to offer to the Lord? Are gratitude and good stewardship the testimony, TREASURES FROM OUR CATHOLIC TRADITION This might be a good time to stock our spiritual cupboard along with our kitchen cupboard in preparation for our celebration of Thanksgiving. Before there was a Thanksgiving Day, even before there were Pilgrims, the Roman Catholic Church celebrated Ember Days ( change-of-season days ) as periods of thanksgiving for seasonal harvests. This means it is a customary Catholic way to give thanks to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. In the 1969 reformed calendar it was left up to the national conferences of bishops to set dates for Ember Days. (The ones on the old calendar fit a Mediterranean climate, and on the new calendar it was imagined that each nation knew best when to schedule such seasonally oriented days.) The United States bishops have not yet resurrected Ember Days, Rogations Days, and other national days of prayer. However, tucked within Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers (a book published by the U. S. bishops) is a chapter on Ember Days that proposes, among others, the three days before Thanksgiving as days of prayer, charity, and fasting. Why wait for an official proclamation? Why not undertake to observe those three days in that way in your parish, or even in your family? What could be more natural at this time of year? STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Stewardship: responding to God s gifts" At the end of time, mankind will face God s judgment where the elect will be gathered into heaven. In faith, we trust in God s love and mercy, and through Stewardship we nurture this faith to follow Christ ever more closely. Jesus, as our high priest, offered his own blood for our salvation and the forgiveness of sins. Our service to one another begins when we observe the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves. May we strive to grow stronger in faith and more diligent in serving God and neighbor. THIS WEEK AT ST. Thabet at Accent Travel, KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Hosting a Casino Night Fundraiser to Support Life Charities January 26, 2013 at 6:30pm For more information please contact Steve Cennamo at scenn@sbcglobal.net NUMBER EIGHTEEN!! For the past sixteen years, St. Mark parishioners have very generously supported the Habitat for Humanity Ministry. As a result of this generous support, SEVENTEEN houses have been built for seventeen families. Twenty-five adults and thirtyseven children lived in these houses when initially occupied. Each of these families has been very appreciative for what has been done for them. HOUSE NUMBER 18 will be built by parishioners starting the weekend of February 1st. Right after the New Year we will be asking for PRAYERS, VOLUNTEERS TO WORK, MEALS AND SNACKS FOR THE VOLUNTEERS AND YOUR FINANCIAL SUP- PORT. About 700 to 800 St. Mark families are involved in each build. Each year, except last year, Bev and I have visited these families at Christmas time. Many of them invite us into their home. They are very proud of some of the changes and modifications that they have done inside and outside. More importantly, they want to tell us about the successes that their children have achieved. To the best of my knowledge all of the children who are old enough have graduated from high school. Several have gone to college, some with scholarships. Some have married and have children of their own. If you are new to our parish, it is important to know this is not a give away program. Families are carefully screened and must have a job that will enable them to pay the monthly mortgage. Additionally they must work 300 sweat equity hours before occupying the house. Prior to signing a mortgage, homeowners must take classes in 12 subjects covering financial management, maintenance, anger management, etc. Watch for more information in future St. Mark publications.
