Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 28, 2011 Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word glory would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word cross. But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

CONTINUING ADULT FAITH FORMATION OFFERINGS Adult Faith Formation at St. Mark the Evangelist in September 2011 Since the 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal will be implemented in Advent of 2011, Adult Faith Formation from September through December, 2011, will consist, not only of presenting the new texts of the Mass, but also exploring the meaning of the liturgy. This will provide a deeper context for the changing words and give us a new appreciation for the sacred rites of the Mass. There will be a detailed study of the parts of the Mass, their meaning and history and implications for living. These sessions will take place on Sundays, beginning on September 11 at 9:30 am, 11:30 am and at 3:30 pm. The sessions will continue on Sept. 25, Oct. 2 & 16, Nov. 6 & 14, and Dec. 4 & 11. Each session will be 1 hour and 15 minutes. All adults are welcome to become informed of the new translation, and to be renewed through a deeper understanding of the meaning of the Eucharistic Liturgy or the Mass. INTERESTED IN ADULT CONFIRMATION? An Archdiocesan-sponsored Adult Confirmation session for any adult who has already celebrated the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist (Communion) will be held here at St. Mark the Evangelist. Registration will take place on Monday, September 12 at 6:30 pm in Shalom followed by the first session. Nine consecutive sessions will continue each Monday evening thereafter from 7 9 pm until November 14. The celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Sunday, November 20 at the 5 pm Mass. A Sponsor is necessary and asked to be present at the sessions. If you have any questions, please call (210) ext PLEASE BRING A RECENT COPY OF YOUR BAPTISMAL & FIRST EUCHARIST CERTIFICATE ON WHICH THERE IS A PARISH SEAL, AND IF YOU ARE MARRIED IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, A COPY OF YOUR MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE. SPONSORS ALSO MUST SUPPLY THESE CERTIFICATES WITH A CERTIFICATE OF CONFIRMATION. DID YOU KNOW? The sacrifice of thanksgiving, which is prescribed in Leviticus 22:29-30 but not mentioned again until the time of David in Psalm 116:12-19 is another important precursor of our Mass. Today we use the word, Eucharist, which comes from the Greek word for sacrifice of thanksgiving. Christians no longer sacrifice animals or grain because the sacrifice of Christ on the cross fulfilled all the sacrifices of the Old Testament. Understanding the Mass, Mike Aquilina CATECHIST WORKSHOPS If you plan to be a catechist this coming year, you are asked to take at least two of the Catechetical workshops required by the Archdiocese of San Antonio each year. These workshops will not only help you in catechizing the children you teach but will also give you new insights into your own faith and help in your faith development. Please give yourself this gift. A listing of upcoming workshops will be posted soon. AN INVITATION TO JUSTFAITH Are you ready to encounter your faith and the Church s social justice mission with adult experiences as your lens? If so, then JustFaith can help you take that next step. JustFaith is a 30-week program that uses books, videos, conversations about the most difficult topics of the day, face-to-face encounters with the poor, and an exploration of what the Christian tradition says about addressing injustice in our world. JustFaith runs from September 15 to May 10. For more information about this life-changing program, contact Sr. Marian Sturm ( ext 326) or one of the JustFaith graduates at the Adult Faith Formation table in the narthex of the Church during August. A BEYOND CANA RETREAT St. Mark the Evangelist is offering a marriage enrichment retreat for the second time to married couples who have a Christ-centered marriage and who want to enrich their marriage through a deeper understanding of the sacrament of marriage, prayer and life-long tools of renewal. In our busy world Beyond Cana offers the couple quiet time away and gives them communication tools that guide them to identify, focus, and deal with issues that challenge their relationship in an intimate, safe environment. It is a time just with your spouse and God. This retreat will take place on Friday through Sunday, September at Hampton Inn in Boerne, Texas. Brochures for registration will be present in the narthex next week. Please save the date for this gift. CHANGING THE MASS? No. Much has been written over the last few years about upcoming changes in how we celebrate Mass. The Liturgy/the Mass is not changing. What we will hear and pray is a new translation of the Mass, i.e. different words, different text. The Mass will remain composed of the same parts, the same patterns and the same flow as we have prayed since the Second Vatican Council in the 1960 s. In the coming weeks we will provide Bulletin inserts with details of some of the text changes. So, keep reading your weekly Bulletin. Over the next few months you will also hear catechesis from the pulpit on how we will pray the Mass beginning the First Sunday of Advent. Meetings will resume again the first Thursday of September in Call Denise for more information. FEAST OF FAITH What Jesus Did, What Jesus Said The oldest account of what happened at the Last Supper comes to us not from the Gospels but from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians: I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me (11:23 24). In our celebrations of the Eucharist, we are obedient to Christ s command to do this. The priest, acting in the person of Christ, does what Jesus did and says what Jesus said. He takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and gives it to the Lord s disciples. He takes wine, gives thanks, shares it with us. We believe that the entire Eucharistic Prayer is consecratory, but we continue to hold these words of Jesus in special reverence. They are called the words of consecration, and the elevations of the host and chalice, the genuflections of the priest, and the ST. MARK WOMEN S ACTS RETREAT COMING IN NOV.
