Mary, the Holy Mother of God January 1, 2012 Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Luke 2:19 THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God s loving kindness, the shining glory of God s face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God s face is shown to us and God s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

3 Sunday: Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES The Octave of Christmas; New Year s Day; Mary, the Most Holy Mother of God; World Day of Prayer for Peace Ss. Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen The Most Holy Name of Jesus St. Elizabeth Ann Seton St. John Neumann St. André Bessette; First Friday St. Raymond of Penyafort; First Saturday; Julian Calendar Christmas ST. BASIL THE GREAT St. Basil the Great was born at Caesarea of Cappadocia in 330. He was one of ten children of St. Basil the Elder and St. Emmelia. Several of his brothers and sisters are honored among the saints. He attended school in Caesarea, as well as Constantinople and Athens, where he became acquainted with St. Gregory Nazianzen in 352. A little later, he opened a school of oratory in Caesarea and practiced law. Eventually he decided to become a monk and found a monastery in Pontus which he directed for five years. He wrote a famous monastic rule which has proved the most lasting of those in the East. After founding several other monasteries, he was ordained and, in 370, made bishop of Caesaria. In this post until his death in 379, he continued to be a man of vast learning and constant activity, genuine eloquence and immense charity. This earned for him the title of "Great" during his life and Doctor of the Church after his death. Basil was one of the giants of the early Church. He was responsible for the victory of Nicene orthodoxy over Arianism in the Byzantine East, and the denunciation of Arianism at the Council of Constantinople in was in large measure due to his efforts. Basil fought simony, aided the victims of drought and famine, strove for a better clergy, insisted on a rigid clerical discipline, fearlessly denounced evil wherever he detected it, and excommunicated those involved in the widespread prostitution traffic in Cappadocia. He was learned, accomplished in statesmanship, a man of great personal holiness, and one of the great orators of Christianity. His feast day is January 2. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Stewardship: A Generosity of Heart D uring our journey on this earth we are accompanied by the Love of God. Moses instructed Aaron and the priests to bless the Israelites so that God would bless them. St. Paul reminds the Galatians that Jesus came as the son of a woman so that we could become adopted sons of God our Father. We can follow the example of the shepherds after they visited the infant Jesus, and glorify and praise God for all He has done for us. When we give praise to God and ask Him to bless our friends and neighbors we are sharing the love He has given us. May we remain mindful of God s enduring love throughout the coming year. Here at St. Mark the Evangelist we always strive to generate programs to help enhance the well being of our community. St. Mark the Evangelist has partnered with RECYCLE4KIDS.ORG, and is taking part in a unique fundraising program designed to conserve scarce and finite resources of Mother Earth by collecting inkjet and toner cartridges for recycling. This program will encourage our parishioners to recycle and, at the same time, help them be aware that by doing so, we extend the use of earth s nonrenewable resources, and consequently, life on earth. The proceeds of the fundraising will benefit the Children s Ministry Lion Store. Over 90% of empty cartridges are incinerated or dumped in our landfills, which add to land and air pollution. These cartridges contain residual toner powder, ink, plastic casing, aluminum and other toxic materials harmful to our environment. By collecting these cartridges you can help us turn these wastes into cash. It saves our environment and helps Children s Ministry Lion Store raise much-needed funds for our children. If you are currently recycling by returning these empty inkjet and toner cartridges to Canon, HP, Lexmark and the like, consider donating them to us instead. You can start collecting these cartridges and dropping them off in a bin that we setup in the Community Center. You can also request recycle containers, posters, flyers, newsletters to putup in your own work place, making it easier and more effective to gather empty cartridges. If you have any inquiries about the program or would like to request recycling resources, please don t hesitate to call me at ext 324 or me at tcrow@stmarkevangelist.com. You can also contact RECY- CLE4KIDS by visiting their website, recycle4kids.org, for further information. Theresa Crow Children s Minister Many thanks to Ruth Moore who has spent many years working as a volunteer catechist with the teens, and now serves as a catechist every Sunday in the Catechumenate for Children. CATHOLIC BOOK GROUP Our Catholic Book Group gathers monthly 7:00-9:00 PM, in the parish library, to share discussion of a book from the America Magazine list of recommended reading. Upcoming books: January 5: Living the Rosary: Finding Your Life in the Mysteries, John Phalen, CSC Unless checked out, books are available in the library for preview. There will be no Senior Social Luncheon on the following days: January 2, 2012

5 COMMUNITY AND SERVICE Holy Land Pilgrimage TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On this feast, we can see how devotion to Mary has been a beacon of hope to the sick throughout history. In the new cathedral of Los Angeles, the faithful enter through a single door topped by a striking sculpture of Mary with arms stretched down in compassion. Sculpted into the massive bronze doors are the titles of Mary most treasured by various cultures. Many of them speak of how the sick are consoled by a sense of Mary s presence. Dorothy Day once recalled St. Bonaventure s remark that after the Lord s long forty days of fasting in the desert, when he was diminished and weak from his struggle, the angels who ministered to him went first to the Blessed Mother s house. There they saw the soup that was on her stove, and took some to the Lord so that he would delight in it even more since his mother had prepared it. Of course, said Dorothy Day matter-of-factly. In praying the rosary and savoring the stories of Mary s steadfast love in the face of all suffering, the sick are strengthened by one of our tradition s most shining treasures, and the whole Church is enriched. Today s reading from Galatians 4:4 refers to God s son as born of a woman which has deep consequences for our belief in the full humanity and full divinity of Jesus as well as Mary s role in accomplishing God s plan of salvation. Authentic faith in Jesus as true God and true man demands that Mary be proclaimed as the Mother of God, just as she is surely the mother of his full humanity. Implications for this union of two natures in Jesus Christ achieved in the womb of Mary is that Jesus took on our human nature so that he who was made human, might make us human beings, gods. This is seen in verse 7 as St. Paul links the human birth of Jesus and our adoption as God s children. ATTENTION MARRIED COUPLES How about a Hill Country weekend getaway!!!!
