Psalm 146:7 THE POOR As Christians, we hear a lot about the witness and service that we are called to render to the poor among us. However, the poor also have a witness and a service to render to us. Like the actions of the widow in today s Gospel, the openness and generosity of many of those who are poor, even in the midst of their own poverty, bear witness to the fact that, ultimately, we can depend only on God. Giving one s all witnesses that God will give all to anyone who trusts in divine goodness. The poor or disadvantaged also serve. They serve judgment on our individual and corporate ways of acting. If people are sleeping in our streets, that is a judgment on our priorities regarding others. At the same time, the poor can act as mediators of salvation. When they care for others they can redeem our indifference and insensibility, lead us to care as well, and save us from ourselves. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

3 Sunday: Monday: Tuesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Veterans Day; Remembrance Day (Canada) St. Josaphat St. Frances Xavier Cabrini St. Albert the Great St. Margaret of Scotland; St. Gertrude St. Elizabeth of Hungary FRANCISCA XAVIER CABRINI ( ) VIRGIN (MEMORIAL) Born in Italy, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini never dreamed that she would be the first (naturalized) citizen of the United States to be canonized. In fact, almost nothing in her life turned out as planned. The order she had hoped to enter denied her admission. The bishop closed the orphanage she worked in, but named her the first prioress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. She wanted to go to China, but the Pope encouraged her to go to New York to work with Italian immigrants instead. When she arrived, the house she intended to turn into an orphanage was unavailable and the Archbishop of New York suggested she return to Italy. Undaunted, she not only stayed, she founded a total of 67 institutions dedicated to the care of the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated, and the sick. Pope Pius XII said of her, "She never let anything turn her aside from striving and aiming to please God and to work for his glory for which nothing, aided by God's grace, seemed too laborious, or difficult, or beyond human strength." St. Francis Cabrini, pray for us when we are tempted to let obstacles keep us from using our gifts for others. TREASURES FROM OUR CATHOLIC TRADITION New religious faith gives fresh lenses for viewing human customs, and the wisdom to transform them. In the ancient world, the Romans feared the dead. Funeral customs were designed to hasten the departure of souls to the next world. Cremation was the rule, although burial increased in popularity in the second century. Procession from the place of death to the place of cremation or burial was the most important part of the funeral. Those who carried the funeral bier carried it low, close to the ground, to promote the soul s departure to the nether world. Christians, on the other hand, did not fear the dead, but cherished them as they consigned them to Christ s love and protection. Gradually, they began to reject customs rooted in fear. Christians carried their dead to their resting places singing, with the bier carried high, away from the ground and toward the heavens. For the Christian, the grave was a sign of hope and a place of remembrance. Superstitious Romans feared burial places, and so the Christians cherished them as places of remembrance and prayer, and in time, even celebrated the Eucharist there. In November, many of us visit the cemetery for prayer and the autumn clean up. By cherishing our dead, we are responding in faith to a vital part of our Christian tradition. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Stewardship: responding to God s gifts" Throughout our human lives we continue to learn by our actions and their results. Through Stewardship of God s gifts we grow in understanding of his love for us. The widow in Zarephath fed Elijah with the last of her flour and oil, and was able to feed herself and her son and Elijah for another year. Her willingness to trust the prophet resulted in a continuing blessing during a time of famine. A widow was the subject of a teaching moment for Jesus when he observed her donating to the temple treasury. In our efforts to observe Christ s command to love our neighbor, may we grow in faith and holiness. THIS WEEK AT ST. Library Hours Tuesday & Wednesday 8:30-10:30am Sunday 8:30-12pm From the Office of Worship at the Archdiocese: Differentiation between Mass Intentions and General Intercessions: It has come to the attention of the Office of Worship that General Intercessions often include individual names of people for whom this Mass is celebrated. Please Note: The Mass is NEVER celebrated for anyone in particular, but for the entire Church. Mass Intentions refer to the PRIEST who offers the Eucharistic Sacrifice for a particular purpose, usually for person(s) living or dead (Canon 901). In contrast, General Intercessions or Prayers of the Faithful are a series of prayers which form part of the Liturgy and are offered by the FAITHFUL. This is the time the faithful exercise their priestly function. The Mass Intention(s) of the PRIEST may be included in the Sunday Bulletin or announced before Mass begins. Mass Intentions should NOT be included in the General Intercessions. Starting in Advent, we at St. Mark's will announce the Mass intention (Name) before Mass begins.
