Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 16, 2011 Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. Matthew 22:21 IN GOD ALONE Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by the Lord. God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that the people will know that "I am the LORD," and that "there is none besides me" (Isaiah 45:6). Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notion--that in God alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in the familiar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

3 Sunday: Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Saturday: SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES St. Luke GOD S GOODNESS Let us throw ourselves into the ocean of God s goodness, where every failing will be cancelled and anxiety turned into love. St. Paul of the Cross Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Ignatius of Antioch; National Boss Day St. Luke Ss. John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, and Their Companions St. Paul of the Cross Blessed Virgin Mary Born to pagan Greek parents, and possibly a slave. One of the earliest converts to Christianity. Physician, studying in Antioch and Tarsus. Probably travelled as a ship s doctor; many charitable societies of physicians are named for him. Legend has that he was also a painter who may have done portraits of Jesus and Mary, but none have ever been correctly or definitively attributed to him; this story, and the inspiration his Gospel has always given artists, led to his patronage of them. He met Saint Paul the Apostle at Troas, and evangelized Greece and Rome with him, being there for the shipwreck and other perils of the voyage to Rome, and stayed in Rome for Paul s two years in prison. Wrote the Gospel According to Luke, much of which was based on the teachings and writings of Paul, interviews with early Christians, and his own experiences. Wrote a history of the early Church in the Acts of the Apostles. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION G Stewardship: A Generosity of Heart od s gifts are many and varied and often hard to recognize. Our definition of a Christian Steward includes the sharing of these gifts in love of God and neighbor. Isaiah points out that Cyrus was chosen by God to be a king and that he used his power to set the captive Israelites free. Yet, Cyrus was unaware of God who gave him his strength. St Paul speaks of the thanks he gives for the faith exhibited by the Thessalonians. Jesus reminds the Pharisees to render to Caesar what is Caesar s and to God what is God s. Our gratitude to God for all he has given us is demonstrated in how we steward those gifts. May we seize every opportunity to share with our neighbor. THIS WEEK AT ST. WHEEL CHAIR PROJECT UPDATE During the weekend of 30 April 1 May, 2011 a parish wide collection was made to support the American Wheel Chair Mission. Our very generous parishioners donated a total of $28,150. This amount was forwarded to the American Wheel Chair Mission in Post Falls, Idaho on 26 May. The American Wheel Chair Mission purchases these wheel chairs in bulk in either a small container or a large container. A small container contains 110 wheel chairs and a large container contains 280 wheel chairs. Wheel chairs are purchased at a price of $150 each. The execution of planning moves very slowly and it now appears that the shipment to Nuevo Laredo will arrive for distribution there sometime in early April, PLEASE JOIN US FOR DINNER!!!! Mobile Loaves and Fishes would like to invite everyone to dine at Fish City Grill Restaurant on Tuesday, November 1, For the third year in a row Fish City Grill has generously agreed to donate 15% of all sales for that day to MLF. Come for lunch or dinner...or just a snack in between!! Bring your friends, family, or business associates. Please support this GREAT restaurant for a GREAT cause!!! See you there! ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED The ranks of our altar servers have dwindled as we had several servers graduate and others move on to other ministries. Pray with your child about the opportunity to serve at Mass. We especially need servers for the 5pm Saturday Mass, & 8am & 10am Sunday Masses. Older youth who can carry the Cross are especially needed. Contact Catherine Lopez or Carroll Migura in the Pastoral Office at Hopefully, the shipment coming to San Antonio will arrive at about the same time. Anyone wishing to participate in distribution of wheel chairs will be most welcome. Parishioners who have done this in the past will tell about the tremendous emotional feelings experienced by both, the receiver and the giver. Please watch for further updates in early Spring or call Sam and Bev Szalwinski at to get your name on a list. Distribution is usually done on a weekend. The cost of participation is at the expense of individual volunteers and will need to cover transportation, lodging and meals.

Jesus.said to them, Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. (Mark 10:14-16) DID YOU KNOW? Jesus intended the Church to continue offering the Mass. His request was simple: Do this in memory of me. (Luke 22:19) In the Acts of the Apostles, we see his apostles following his request. After the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, three thousand new Christians were baptized and they held steadfastly to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers (Acts 2:42).Christians had the breaking of the bread in their private homes apart from other Jews. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved (Acts 2:46-47). The tradition of the Mass is unbroken from the time of Christ to our own day..
